After last year’s miserable weather, Fourth of July organizers in Cloquet have been busy refreshing the weather app on their phones. On Tuesday night — a week before the big day — the iPhone weather app predicted perfect Minnesota summer weather: partly sunny, temperatures in the upper 70s. The next morning the same weather app showed a 50-percent chance of rain on July 4. Nine hours later the forecast was back to no rain and a high of 81 degrees. Other than the weather, all the various event...
A Wrenshall-area farm with roughly 50 horses and cows is under investigation again, following renewed reports of animals being underfed and lacking care. The spotlight on the farm returned Monday at the Carlton County board meeting in Cloquet, where concerned residents reported harrowing details, and both the county attorney's office and a statewide nonprofit humane society reported ongoing investigations into the farm. "I've been watching these horses and cows on this property since 2019 and...

Lee James Anderson, 36, of Cloquet passed into his Father's arms on May 29, 2023. God sent this "special needs" child into this world to spread joy, laughter and sunshine to all who knew him. Lee attended Winterquist Elementary, where his classmates accepted him unconditionally, showing him compassion, understanding and friendship. Lee graduated from Esko High School in 2007. Lee was preceded in death by his mother, Joanne; grandparents, Bruce and Lois Anderson and Lloyd and Joyce Sletten; and h...
Irene M. Peterson, 87, of Barnum died peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at her home with her family by her side. She was born on Oct. 28, 1935, in Mahtowa to Herbert and Jennie Olson. Irene grew up east of Barnum and attended Central School. She worked as a nanny in West Duluth and later worked at Wood Conversion/Conwed (USG) in Cloquet for 16 years. On Dec. 27, 1969, Irene married Donald D. Peterson in Barnum. After their daughter, Kelly Jo, was born, Irene became a stay-at-home mom and...
We had to look twice at this 1898 ad from the old Pine Knot newspaper. Cream? Didn't they mean "scream"? We saw this phrase in several other newspapers from the era so we assume it was a thing back in the day, mostly regarding an upcoming patriotic event like Fourth of July. Is "cream" another term for the cry of an eagle? We couldn't find any modern day references to the term, thus the mystery. This was, indeed, a big Fourth of July for Cloquet and communities across the country as the...
Add "college classroom" to the list of activities at Cloquet's Pine Valley Recreation Area, known for its ski jumping, Nordic skiing, mountain biking, hiking, trail running, snowshoeing, hockey games, picnics and social gatherings. University of Minnesota students completing the Forest Ecosystem Management and Conservation track within the Forest and Natural Resource Management major are required to attend an advanced session held during the spring term at the university's Cloquet Forestry...
The former executive director of the Cloquet/Carlton Housing & Redevelopment Authority was fired on May 12 for a long list of reasons outlined in a letter its board gave her that day. In the letter, board members declared that the “serious nature” of its concerns left it “no recourse but to terminate” her employment after more than 16 years there. The Pine Knot News obtained the letter to Debra Shaff from an attorney representing the HRA after the newspaper made a request for information regarding her dismissal under the Minnesota’s data practi...
Cloquet police are cracking down on risky driving, with the goal of helping everyone on the road get home safely. That means stopping people who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, along with those who are texting and driving, speeding or engaging in other poor driving behaviors. While the entire force makes traffic stops like these in addition to other duties and calls for service, there is one officer who focuses solely on impaired driving, thanks to a state grant that fully f...
The debate over making lacrosse a sanctioned high school sport advanced slightly at Monday’s meeting, as administration and the local Northern Siege Youth Lacrosse Association inch toward an acceptable agreement. But it won’t be an easy sell, at least not in its current form. Board member and former Cloquet superintendent Ken Scarbrough expressed strong concerns about the proposal to have Northern Siege fund all the costs for a high school lacrosse program for the next five years and how that will impact the district’s control over the poten...
A Carlton man charged with possessing and creating pornographic work of children is now facing federal charges which carry a much higher mandatory minimum sentence, according to Carlton County Attorney Lauri Ketola. Stephan Jeremiah Hansen, 29, made his initial appearance May 26 in U.S. District Court in Duluth on four charges of production and attempted production of child pornography. The indictment describes four images of naked minor girls. Key to the federal charges is the use of materials that had been “mailed, shipped and transported t...
The Declaration of Independence in 1776 was a start, but 10 years into the American experiment, things were fractious in the former British colonies. A move was on to develop a constitution that would galvanize the union, in a way that could stand the test of time and expected massive shifts in the makeup of the country, an effort to "form a more perfect union." The Federalist Papers were a series of 85 essays appearing in New York newspapers in 1787 and 1788 urging the citizens of New York to...
We had seen the flyers around town and the articles in the Pine Knot in the six years after we moved to Carlton County. We never managed to attend a performance of the County Seat Theater until our granddaughter was in a cast. Little did we know what an entertainment treasure we have in our midst. "To be or not to be; that is the question," is the oft repeated line in the theater's recent production of "Women Playing Hamlet." That has not been a question for the community theater group these...
In the June 23 issue, the Pine Knot published an article asserting that the Cloquet library “supports intellectual freedom.” Nevertheless, my family has felt pressured to accept certain agendas every time we visit the library. In that article, the author states “We believe that parents have the right to guide their children’s reading and education.” As a local parent with school-aged children, I feel as though the Cloquet library unfairly threatens this right. It is very challenging to guide my children when they are forced to encounter...
Unsurprisingly, Republican leadership has weighed in to make excuses for Rep. Jeff Dotseth’s legislative failures regarding funding for the female offenders program included in the Carlton County Justice Center (Pine Knot, June 9, 2023). Rep. Urdahl was quick to gloss over the fact that Dotseth was late to the table with the required legislative ask for funds. He waited all the way until March 23 to introduce the bill, at which point the legislative session was well beyond halfway over. Thanks to the diligence and persistence of Carlton C...
The third annual Cloquet Wood City Classic girls softball tournament was on a rainy weekend last week at Braun Park in Cloquet. There were 34 teams participating in three age divisions and, as usual, the tournament was another impressive display of teamwork by all. "Our grounds crew, parents, umpires and staff all did an amazing job," said tournament director Adam Maslowski. "We had to battle rain and the elements, but we got all the games in, and there were no complaints and, most importantly,...
One hundred years after the founding of the Cloquet Country Club, Karson Patten won the coveted title of club champion. The 2023 Cloquet High School graduate led the Lumberjacks to the Minnesota State High School Class AA golf tournament in mid-June, where he finished second, while the team took third place. The golf star had a hole-in-one at the club a few weeks ago and also recently qualified for the Minnesota Golf Association state tournament. Needless to say, Patten is having an awesome...
Competition turned to camaraderie June 20 at Wade Stadium in Duluth as the Polar League held its softball and baseball all-star games with players selected from league teams. In softball, Team Blue had a three-run sixth inning to put away Team Silver 5-1. In the baseball game, Team Haugen/Weber (coaches Ben Haugen of Esko and Aaron Weber of South Ridge) defeated Team Levinski (Cromwell-Wright coach Dean Levinski) 16-4. Five days earlier, Esko did the league proud by winning the Class AA state...

School patrol students from Esko and Cloquet's Washington and Churchill elementary schools enjoyed pizza, pop and patriotism this spring at the annual party hosted by the Cloquet VFW and its auxiliary. VFW members showed students how a flag is properly folded and the meaning behind it. Placemats at tables kept the 45 fourth- and fifth-grade students busy, where a poppy, certificate of appreciation and a gold dollar coin were also placed. There were 20 pizzas to enjoy, under the delighted watch...
Cloquet students were prepped on Memorial Day this year, courtesy of the American Legion Auxiliary. Churchill third-grade student Makayla Saarland, left, and fourth-grade student Autumn Prachar receive coloring books on the story of the poppy, presented by auxiliary president Penny Buran. Washington Elementary School also received the books. At Cloquet Middle School, copies of "Our Country's Flag" comic books were presented....

In the weeks before midsummer, salad greens, rhubarb, radishes and spring turnips brighten farmers market stalls at the Carlton County Farmers Market. When the longest days of the year arrive, so does a delicious but underrecognized vegetable: kohlrabi. Of all the vegetables sold at the market (with the possible exception of horseradish), kohlrabi is the one that inspires the most questions. What is that? How do you cook it? Can I grow it in my garden? To answer these questions, the Cloquet...
