"It's awesome to be back!" Those were the words uttered by Sawdust 5K race director Jeff Leno over the weekend as the fan-favorite race made its return after a 1-year hiatus due to Covid-19. Just last month, Sam Baker was leading his Cloquet High School boys golf team to a state title, with the team winning the Class AA title and Baker taking first individually. Now the recent CHS graduate can add another feather to his hat after qualifying to play in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. "It has been a pretty exciting time, to say the least," Baker said. After working around some pandemic restrictions last summer, the 90th annual Cloquet Invitational is being held at Cloquet Country Club, this Friday through Sunday (July 9-11), as normal. In all, 175 golfers are registered for this prestigious event, including Alex Kolquist, last year’s champ. In the 2020 championship flight, Kolquist defeated Travis Blais of International Falls by two strokes. It was the second Cloquet title for the Hermantown native, who also won at CCC in 2012.
