Our silent auction solicits one-of-a-kind donations from community members who have designed and made things themselves: paintings, photographs, sculpture, quilts, weavings, table runners, placemats, homemade jellies, pickles, breads and soaps, handmade...
Wrenshall is the land of milk and honey — literally. Two weeks ago we celebrated milk production in Wrenshall with Breakfast on the Farm at the Laveau Dairy, and this week I got to taste fresh honey straight from the comb. The Food Farm provides fields for local producer Christian Dahm’s bees to forage. His bright, multicolored boxes are located on the northwest corner of our farm and offer a cheery sight for folks coming and going on County Road 1. On Sunday, Dahm was out checking on his col...

With summer in full swing and the Fourth of July in our rearview mirror, the Cloquet Legion baseball team is preparing for a district tournament right around the corner. "We are a very young team," fourth-year head coach Bruce Baker said. "Our roster features only three seniors from the Lumberjack roster this season and one player, Tim Pokornowski, who graduated in 2018 from Cloquet." Pokornowski - the former Cloquet three-sport standout and now a UMD football and baseball player - is a welcome...
The basketball courts at Pinehurst Park were awash in action and testosterone Friday, packed with young men playing basketball, or bantering as they hung out along the fence waiting for their next turn to play. For three hours, the courts were constantly in motion, with 3-on-3 games going on at both ends, 10 minutes each or the first team to get to 21 points in the first-ever Cloquet Fourth of July 3-on-3 basketball tournament, held a day later due to heavy rains the day before. Cloquet High...
I have always had an eye on the old sheds sitting in the meadow at North Cloquet Road and Midway Road. They are so photogenic in different lights each day. So, with the camera in the car and tooling around after the Fourth of July parade in Cloquet, I came across two turkey vultures perched on the shed closest to the road. Perfect opportunity. They caught my eye because one had just alit onto the peak, tucking its wide wings to its side. It looked like the two were just having a conversation,...
