  • Jail project charges along in bonding limbo

    Dan Reed|Jul 15, 2022

With bonding money from the state in limbo after the legislature failed to reach an agreement on an omnibus bonding bill, the Carlton County board of commissioners is counting on voter approval of the half-percent sales tax in the November election. Funding for the $70-plus million complex is dependent on the approval of the sales tax to avoid adding to the local property tax hit. When asked about the impact on property taxes, county coordinator Dennis Genereau essentially said the county is looking at multiple funding streams. “The county is f...

  • Cloquet offers broadband partnership

    Rebekah King|Jul 15, 2022

Broadband availability is a hot topic once again in Thomson township, with the Cloquet broadband committee seeking to include an underserved area of the township in their proposal to provide better broadband options to more households in Carlton County. Township clerk Rhonda Peleski told the Thomson Township board of supervisors about the opportunity to join in on the project at their meeting Thursday, July 7. According to Peleski, the city of Cloquet has partnered with telecommunications service provider CTC to prepare and find funding to...

  • Washington honored for positive programs

    Jana Peterson|Jul 15, 2022

Cloquet School Board members learned Monday that Washington Elementary School is one of a few schools across the state recognized as a sustaining exemplary school for its ongoing efforts with positive behavioral interventions and supports, or PBIS. Washington was first recognized for its program in 2020. Students and parents at Washington don’t call it PBIS, though — for them it’s “Purple PRIDE.” PRIDE stands for having a Positive attitude, being Respectful, Including others and Doing your best Everyday. It is essentially a code of conduct,...

  • School forest plans grow

    Rebekah King|Jul 15, 2022

The Esko school district’s plans to create a school forest for students has blossomed into a bigger project that the whole Esko community can become involved in. Steve Krueger, a teacher at Esko, proposed the idea of a school forest to the Esko school board back in April. The board gave Krueger and the school forest committee its approval to move forward with the project so that the committee could begin working with the Department of Natural Resources. Krueger presented the committee’s lat...

  • Ad Libbing: Building community is a group project

    Ivan Hohnstadt|Jul 15, 2022

It’s not often I contribute editorial content. My primary responsibility is to make sure we can pay the bills. In short, sell advertising. But I was reminded again of the importance of a local newspaper while listening to Weekend Edition Sunday on Minnesota Public Radio this past weekend. Ayesha Rascoe interviewed Amy Duncan of Indianola, Iowa. She and her husband recently bought the local newspaper from Gannett, a media juggernaut that owns hundreds of news outlets across the country. Gannett has been selling off local newspapers recently. I...

  • Letter to the editor: Township should be more proactive

    Jul 15, 2022

At times, I have been very critical of local government, but I actually applaud their day-to-day work of taking care of maintaining roads and bridges and snow plowing: For the most part, the road crews do an excellent job under some trying circumstances. My Thomson Township board also does a very good job of administering our fire department with its fiscal and moral support. What I am critical of is the “beyond day-to-day” routine issues the board deals with twice a month. More generally, many local governing boards are usually reactive to...

  • Letter to the editor: Let's communicate

    Jul 15, 2022

What are we missing? We think (1) climate change is an existential issue requiring major, immediate, bipartisan government action; (2) government and policy that reflect the majority would promote a more perfect union, and (3) more unites us than divides us. But others disagree. We invited you to tell us. What are we missing? We’ll be ready with notebook and pencil to write down what you tell us, at these locations 4-5 p.m. Thursdays: • TJ’s in Mahtowa July 14 • The porch at the Chickadee in Barnum July 21 • Tables in front of Joe Jitters i...

  • Hello, berry season

    Pine Knot News|Jul 15, 2022

It seems to rush upon us every year ... berry season. After a rather chilly spring and wet past few weeks, there are berries galore in the area. Honeyberries came first at Farm LoLa in Wrenshall and now the strawberries are going at places like Spectrum Farm in Carlton. Raspberries and blueberries are coming in what is expected to be a bumper crop compared to those during last year's drought. We received some recipes to try from Spectrum and LoLa. If you have one you'd like to share, send it...

  • Baker takes Invitational

    Steve Korby|Jul 15, 2022

As Cloquet's most heralded young golfer, it wasn't a total surprise to local golf pundits when Sam Baker won the Cloquet Invitational amateur tournament last weekend. After all, the 2021 Cloquet High graduate was the medalist and individual and team champion at the 2021 Minnesota State High School Class AA golf tournament. He also holds - from the regular white tees - the Cloquet Country Club course scoring record of 62. With a college scholarship, Baker will be leaving in August to attend Flori...

  • Basketball reigns at Pinehurst

    Jana Peterson|Jul 15, 2022

The basketball courts at Pinehurst Park were buzzing with basketball Saturday afternoon, as the annual 3-on-3 tournament commenced five days later than anticipated. Delayed by stormy cold weather on July Fourth, Saturday was sunny and warm. With two half-court games happening simultaneously - each one with a referee - the courts were constantly busy. Meanwhile, the fences were draped with players, coaches and supporters watching and/or waiting their turn. "We couldn't have asked for better weath...

  • Korby's Connections: Playing a round in Finland

    Steve Korby|Jul 15, 2022

Often, I’ve dreamed of playing golf on new courses or maybe even on the turf of foreign countries. My Korby grandparents were born in Finland. Could I ever play close to where they grew up, farmed and trekked? This June, my spouse’s family, also Finns, planned a vacation to southwestern Finland/Suomi on the Baltic Sea. They took me along. Their Finnish cousins we visited are both avid golfers. When they golfed — which was nearly every other day — they took me along. Outi and Timo Paukkio, the co...

  • Kettle River news

    Marcia Sarvela|Jul 15, 2022

I wonder how fast the driver of a flatbed truck was going last Friday morning to bury his truck in the mud across from North Road on County Road 6. He had to be going very fast to have gone past the stop sign and end up quite a way from the pavement in the mud. There were two huge vehicles trying to get him out of the swamp. When I came back past the area later in the day, it looked like a small pond where the truck had been buried. I hope everyone will be able to attend the Finnish Luncheon at noon Tuesday, July 19 at the Kettle River senior...
