"Come on, Betsy, let's go!" This was the enthusiastic cheer of my 4-year-old last Friday as we set off with his grandma and 50 other area residents on a coach bus tour of the Nemadji Watershed. Organized by Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) water resources technician Melanie Bomier, the tour was a kickoff to the development of a master plan for the Nemadji watershed. Dubbed "Nemadji One Watershed," this planning initiative is designed to provide a comprehensive vision for the...
For the next two months, the Pine Knot Gallery is showing Adam Swanson's paintings. When I first saw his work, I was struck by his blends of color, as in his "You Are the Water," depicting two working men on an outdoor industrial job site, full of blacks and blue-grays punctuated by red jackets and yellow pants. And his "Nowhere Else to Go," a painting of a Boundary Waters-like channel, as if you are in a canoe and approaching a narrowing between orange and red cliffs topped by towering pines....
It was as if the bees were calling them, said Glenn Swanson, organizer of this weekend's "Bee Friendly Day" in Carlton. He told how he and his wife, Emily, got some used beehives from a friend more than a year ago. They put them behind the garage, thinking they'd find time to do more research on bees and beekeeping when they had time. "Then a swarm of bees moved in," Swanson said. "Looking back, it's almost like the bees came over and said, 'Hey, can you help us?' It really just grew out of...
Carlton's celebration of "Carlton Daze" is just around the corner, July 26-28. Over the years how many community celebrations has Carlton had? I checked at the Carlton County Historical Society to see if I could find out the answer. Although I did not find out the exact number, there have been several celebrations, dances and parades in the Carlton community. The celebrations have taken place at different times of the year -- likely to find the niche where we fit into the community festivities...
Hermantown's Taylor Sundbom won his third Cloquet Country Club Invitational Sunday, coming from three strokes off the lead to tie Matt Mellin of Duluth and force extra holes. With both players tied at 216 after three days of play, Sundbom birdied the first playoff hole to capture his third title in the past five years. Sundbom entered the final day trailing Mellin but quickly tied him on the fifth hole with a birdie while Mellin parred. It came after Sundbom parred the first hole while Mellin...
It’s been a busy summer so far for the Esko Legion baseball program. As of Tuesday, the Esko senior Legion team sported a 6-4 record while the junior Legion team is 7-3. With playoffs right around the corner, coaches and players alike will be even busier. “We just went 2-2 this past weekend in the Ely tournament and beat St. Paul-Arcade Phalen 8-3 on Friday, with Dane Hoffman getting the pitching win,” said Esko coach Jim Karnas. “James Legarde had two runs scored and two RBIs for us in the gam...
Braun Park was the hub of softball in northern Minnesota over this past weekend with the USSSA Northern State Softball Championships. The complex will continue to be a mecca for ball when a massive baseball tournament takes place next weekend, July 26-28, with a smaller coach-pitch tournament this weekend. "No doubt we have been busy this summer," said Cloquet Youth Baseball and Softball Association president Jason Eckenberg. "The ballfields have been redone and the park is just beautiful. The...
On any given Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday you may see the large group of mountain bikers standing eagerly, roughly in a circle. This group is the Cloquet- Esko-Carlton mountain biking team, and they are itching to get riding on the trails to continue their training for the upcoming races scattered across Minnesota and Wisconsin. There is a significant age range, with the youngest riders in sixth grade and the oldest preparing to start their senior year of high school. The CEC mountain biking...
ROI: Return on Investment. For those who don’t know, this simply means what you get (return) for what you give (invest). And as a taxpayer, you have the right and responsibility to ask about the returns (services given) for your investments (taxes). Every year, the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District SWCD publishes an annual report that tells taxpayers and Carlton County landowners what their ROI is for the federal, state, and local public funds that support SWCD programs, projects a...
The freshly fried walleyes had barely hit the cake pan when they were scooped up by the masses gathered around our picnic table. A Baker fish fry was in full swing. In all, 25 friends and family lined our yard, plates in hand, ready to pounce each time I made an appearance with a basket of fish. Before the last batch was done frying, new fishing plans were in the works. My cousin, Ben Nynas of Mahtowa, along with his guest, John Kerr from Louisiana and I would head over to Mille Lacs later in...
I would say my number is about 20 this year. That is the number of ticks which I have taken off my legs, socks and pants this year. I love to be outside, either running or walking my dogs but there is a downside. The ticks are around and they are hungry. After every trip out into the woods or fields, it is time for a tick check. Tickborne disease are mostly diagnosed in the summer months of June, July and August. There has been a rise in diseases, based on data collected by the Centers for...
Fifty years ago was a monumental time in American history. On July 20, 1969, our country made President John F. Kennedy's 1961 proclamation - to put a man on the moon and return him safely, by the end of the decade - a reality. As part of its "Space Week" and in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon walk, the Cloquet Public Library hosted John Cavanaugh Monday evening. It was the anniversary of the Apollo 11 crew lifting off and making history five days later. Cavanaugh is an amateur...
Dozens of runners and volunteers gathered to have fun and honor the late Cole Drechsler during the Cloquet Rotary Club’s annual Color Run Saturday, June 13. Their transformation from the start to the finish line rivaled caterpillars turning into butterflies. The Rotary Club, the local Junior Rotarian program and the Drechsler family worked hand-in-hand to create a colorful race that Cole would have loved. “He provided lots of color,” Dawn Drechsler said in last week’s interview with Pine Kn...
Scott Staples (Carlton) worked boating and off-highway vehicle activity this past holiday week. Enforcement action was taken for angling without a license, no license in possession, insufficient life jackets, operating dirt bikes on the road, operating an ATV without a valid driver’s license on the road, operating an ATV in unfrozen public waters, and various registration violations. One boat that was checked had three anglers in it. All three lied about having a fishing license. Two out of the three bought licenses online within 20 minutes a...

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will begin herbicide applications on select state lands to improve reforestation efforts. Applications will begin around July 30 and continue through approximately September 10 on parcels located in the Fond du Lac and Cloquet Valley state forests. Signs will be posted on all herbicide treatment sites. Adjacent landowners within a quarter mile of the treatment sites have already been notified. Herbicides will not be applied within 100 feet of any waterbody, following DNR herbicide application...
