The Cloquet VFW baseball team entered Sunday's playoffs with a regular season record of 6-14. Despite playing a number of younger players, the team pulled off an impressive extra-inning win on Sunday before falling in back-to-back games on Monday. Forty years ago this week, a two-year-old Tiger Woods appeared on the afternoon TV variety program "The Mike Douglas Show." Little Tiger was featured because of his status as a national golfing prodigy. Other guests on the program were Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart and Tiger's Dad, Earl Woods. However, the ultramarathon stands alone as the ultimate test of an athlete's physical and mental endurance. Here in the Northland, 238 racers decided to push their limits and attempt to run the 50-mile Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra on Saturday, July 27. The Cloquet American Legion baseball team went 1-2 in the District 10 tournament last week, after opening with a 7-2 victory over Hibbing. Cloquet was the host site this year, with Wade Stadium in Duluth as the secondary site for a District 10 tournament that included Cloquet, Hibbing, West Duluth, Thunder Bay, Hermantown, Grand Rapids, Nisswa, and Duluth Lakeview. Stretching out in front of us, dozens of boats jostled for position, awaiting blastoff. One person is dead following an ATV accident Sunday off South Finn Road in Lakeview Township. According to a press release from the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, at 12:06 p.m. Sunday, August 4, Carlton County Dispatch received a report of an ATV accident. The male driver, age 35 from Brooklyn Center, Minn. was riding up and down the driveway of the family cabin when he lost control and hit a tree.
