  • On The Mark: Family history runs through our reunions

    Ann Markusen|Aug 9, 2019

I've long admired the way some area families are so locally present. Hosting a reunion requires little more than picking a date, sending out the word and preparing food. Since the last Stillwater reunion in 2006, my generation of an extraordinarily dispersed family has taken the initiative, organizing a reunion in Cambria, California (2014) and this July back in Minnesota. Our Markusen/Lee/Wilson family settled in Stillwater in the late 1880s, our forefathers and foremothers generating lots of p...

  • Playing hard at the Brickyard

    Pine Knot News|Aug 9, 2019

Wrenshall celebrated Brickyard Days last weekend and, judging from the buzz around the activities, the proverbial good time was had by all. The weather, while a bit steamy, cooperated and the smalltown festival feel prevailed all weekend....

There was a great gathering of former employees of the Diamond Match Company for a potluck picnic at the public park in Esko on Aug. 4. It was so much fun seeing all the folks who came and renewed their friendships. They decided to...

  • Green guy: It's easy to be bee-friendly

    Chris Gass|Aug 9, 2019

Just a few weeks ago on a fine July Saturday afternoon, I had the pleasure of taking part in the Oldenburg’s “Bee Friendly Day.” The event, centered around capturing the importance of pollinators in our local region, hosted a variety of pollinator-themed activities with something for everyone. For the garden buffs and flower advocates, I gave a short presentation on behalf of the Carlton SWCD and highlighted a little bit about our pollinators and how we can invite them into our landscape. No su...

  • Cloquet senior has sights on going pro

    Caleb Swanson|Aug 9, 2019

Many of Jonny Dunaiski's peers know him from his work on the volleyball court and during floor hockey season, but one activity rises above the rest. Disc golf is the Cloquet High School senior's main focus. For those unfamiliar, disc golf is played with special discs (like Frisbees, but evolved) and follows the same rules as golf. The main difference is the players are trying to get a disc into a basket instead of a golf ball in a hole. Practicing for hours, competing, and traveling for disc...

  • Pine Hill in Carlton caters to golfers of all ages

    Steve Korby|Aug 9, 2019

Located just over one mile south of Highway 210 on Highway 61 in Carlton, Pine Hill Golf Course isn't hard to find. Just drive past the Royal Pines Inn, Olsonville, and the Carlton County transportation building on "Old 61" and you're there. Originally built by...

  • Rod's Ramblings: Sights, sounds and smells mark fall sports

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 9, 2019

A week ago Tuesday morning I woke up to head to my job at WKLK Radio. I walked outside and the air — at 46 degrees — had a crispness about it that I haven’t felt since last fall. It felt refreshing and ominous at the same time: refreshing, because of the heat we had been dealing with the previous days, and ominous, because it felt more like a fall morning ... which means winter is not far off. My thoughts raced ahead to thoughts of fall sports and how soon we will hear the sounds of those sport...

  • It's permanency for pickleball courts in Cloquet

    Jana Peterson|Aug 9, 2019

Anyone who thinks getting older means being less active should visit Cloquet's new pickleball courts on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday morning. Last week the courts at Churchill Elementary/Sunnyside Park were packed with mostly senior citizen players, using paddles to bat what looked like a tiny wiffleball back and forth on the bright blue courts. The women players outnumbered men by a ratio of about 4:1. Heart rates were elevated but there was a lot of laughing going on too. When asked what...

Reeves did not say why, but Palmer has been on voluntary paid leave since mid-April. • DNR report

    Department of Natural Resources|Aug 9, 2019

Recent reports from Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers in the area: Scott Staples (Carlton) assisted the State Patrol with an ATV accident in which a juvenile hit a pickup truck while trying to cross State Highway 210. Assistance was given to the Michigan DNR after a report of a dead collared wolf. The wolf was located and found to have been killed by a motor vehicle. Data from the collar showed that in the past year the wolf travelled from the Upper Peninsula, across Wisconsin, back to Michigan and then into...

  • Kettle River festival hangs on

    Mike Creger|Aug 9, 2019

The theme for this year's annual celebration in Kettle River is apt historically and for the event itself: "Ma & Pa Kettle Days Rebuilds After the 1918 Fire." It was the devastating forest fire a century ago that forced two distinct ethnic groups, the Finns and the Poles, to merge their communities and form the heart of a rebuilt Kettle River. Ma & Pa Kettle Days is rebuilding as well, after talk of the event's demise circulated in 2017. Morgan Yeats and Marcia Sarvela were not ready to see the...

  • Christian music festival continues to grow in Cloquet

    Jana Peterson|Aug 9, 2019

Not bad for a festival borne out of a prayer group with no event organizing chops. Lee Harris was praying and got a “prompt” to start working on developing a festival. A few months later, the first Wood City Music Festival debuted. About 1,700 people came out to see seven or eight bands, Harris said. Things have only gotten bigger. The music festival director figures the free Christian music festival doubled in size the first 2-3 years, and peaked in 2017 with between 8,000 and 9,000 people bef...

  • Volunteer highlight

    Pine Knot News|Aug 9, 2019

Volunteer Services of Carlton County Pine Knot News Hats serve many purposes, both practical and fashionable, and in times past were an indicator of social status. Today, “hats” can also refer to the many roles we fill. Many will agree that wearing many hats, figuratively speaking, is quite a balancing act. And while wearing many hats presents many challenges, it also presents many opportunities. This month’s featured volunteer, Jennie K. Hanson of Wright, fondly known as “the hat lady,” thrives on wearing many hats, literally and figurativ...

  • Classic rides at a classic eatery

    Pine Knot News|Aug 9, 2019

Last Thursday evening, the parking lot at Gordy's HiHat was packed with plenty of cars that were new when the local roadside diner opened. But that was nearly 60 years ago ... and now both the cars and the restaurant are much admired classics. It was that time of year again -- the annual Gordy's Hi-Hat Classic Car Show was Thursday, Aug. 1. Jim Viner and Dave Couture admired Ken Landwehr's 1961 Chrysler 330G as Landwehr headed back to Duluth following the annual car show. Viner, of Pike Lake,...

  • Bird studies came early for Carlton woman

    Jana Peterson|Aug 9, 2019

One of the most important things a person can do in their life is to find their passion. Some people spend years experimenting and seeking out their passion, while a lucky few find what they are passionate about at a young age. One's passion can range from painting to riding bikes to stargazing or, in Carlton resident Abbie Valine's case, bird watching. A homeschooled student, Valine discovered her interest in birds while fulfilling her second-grade science curriculum, which touched on insects a...
