Over 555 people attended Saturday's Mud Bog event during Ma & Pa Kettle Days, more than three times the population of the small Carlton County town. For those who aren’t familiar with mudding sports, there’s more than one type of mud bog, although they all involve vehicles driving into a giant mud pit. “This particular mud bog is more of a ‘bounty hole’ style. You’re not really supposed to make it through,” explained mud bog committee member Eric Senarighi. A mud bog is very different from a mud...
The annual Wood City Worship Festival brought music, food, faith and a ton of people to Veterans Park Saturday, plus a whole lot of fun. Even after the "foam party" was over, Maryah Christenson, 5, and Suri Keller, 6, had fun rolling through a foot of foam, ending their playtime covered in tiny soap bubbles. Meanwhile Josiah Gallegos, age 2 of Cloquet, kept up with the high-energy Go Fish band, jumping all over the grass in front of the stage through the band's various kid-friendly tunes. It...

Ted Swenson knew his farm had passed the 100-year mark, he just didn't know it happened in 2011. A trip to the Carlton County Courthouse led to that discovery last year. Now Swenson's Dairy will be honored as Carlton County's latest Century Farm in a program starting at noon Friday at the Carlton County Fair. To qualify as a Century Farm, a farm must have been continuously run by a family for a century or more, be at least 50 acres in size and currently involved in farming. Now owned by Ted...

The Young Life golf outing drew 29 teams to the Cloquet Country Club in early August. Young Life is a faith-based organization that connects caring adults with high school and middle school students. The group is in its 23rd year in the Cloquet area. "As leaders, we meet students on their turf and spend time getting to know them," said Young Life's Brian Points. "We build trust so we can be great listeners and advice givers when needed. We also hold weekly meetings called 'club' at which we...
The Esko school district updated its student handbooks to tighten rules on student cell phone use, including no phone on students while they sit at their desks. At Monday's school board meeting, superintendent Aaron Fischer introduced the revisions which are intended to standardize the rules for all the classrooms. The Minnesota legislature in the last session directed schools to set cell phone use policies by March 15, 2025. The legislation did not directly prescribe how the policies should be...

The move will save the district roughly $6,500 a year. Images publishes 10 times a year, with printing, delivery and postage...

Runners will have to collect data cards with their bib...
Judge Rebekka Stumme offered no leniency Friday, Aug. 9 when she sentenced a 41-year-old Cloquet man to nine years in prison for cornering and attempting to assault a 12-year-old relative who was under his care. “You, sir, are the farthest things from amenable to treatment,” Stumme said in Sixth District Court in Carlton, denying Tony Allen Gohl’s plea for a lesser sentence. Now twice convicted of violent sexual encounters, Gohl received a “top of the box” sentence, based on state guidelines. The 108-month sentence followed Gohl’s jury convicti...
Natural resource officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources have reported calls this month about nuisance bears in the area. Cloquet area officer Tony Elwell said, "trash cans need to be secured inside, and all food sources including dog food and especially bird feeders need to be removed completely, or bear problems will continue." Brookston officer Derek Peterlin said that once the attractants are inaccessible, "the bear will likely move on and have no reason to return."...

A Carlton County man was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing three young girls in his care. Jamie Alden Godbout, 35, dated their mother for nearly a decade and was part of the family, so much so that the girls’ grandmother actually testified on his behalf, asking for a reduced sentence. But Sixth District Carlton County Judge Amy Lukasavitz echoed the words of the one victim who testified Friday. “You were the adult, you were the person who was supposed to protect them,” said Lukasavitz, who sentenced him t...
This was a big week in local politics, although it passed quietly enough. During Tuesday’s primary, voters in District 5 whittled down the number of county commissioner candidates to two — Dan Reed and Alex French — who will advance to the General Election in November. Countywide, we also voted for judicial candidates in a rare local race with no incumbent. Shawn Reed (an Esko grad) and Gunnar Johnson advanced to the general election in that race. But Tuesday was also the final day to file as a candidate in seven local school board races with 2...
If you’re at all like me, it probably feels like we’ve already been through at least three different presidential election years so far this year. And given the pace of events, it’s a good bet that between now and November, there’s more to come. The presidential contest has so thoroughly dominated our attention — not to mention news cycles — that even the Senate and House races have pretty much disappeared from view. In this environment, the central role that ordinary Americans play — except as...
A person can’t work for the FBI or CIA with felony convictions and yet they can be the president of the United States and have 34 felonies on their record. Some things must change regarding this policy, as it opens the door for felons to be commander in chief of our military. Many religious leaders and people who call themselves Christians will vote for the candidate who appointed justices to the Supreme Court who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, taking away the woman’s right to choose, and yet will vote for a womanizer, liar, convicted fel...
It was a perfect breezy, not-too-hot Saturday for a parade, and kid and adult fun in Northridge Park during the fifth day of Esko Fun Days last week. County Highway 61 and Canosia Road was lined with people, especially kids eager for some candy. A walk down those streets after the parade showed that there was more than enough candy tossed, the streets remained littered with untouched packages of sweet stuff. It was food and inflatables, and the popular dunk tank in the park after the parade....
Get ready to rock, Cloquet. The Social Animals are coming home to celebrate a new single and new owners at The Jack. Look for an edgier sound to rattle the hometown bar. Local bars, after all, were the band's bread and butter a few years ago. Made up of vocalist Dedric Clark, guitarist Tony Petersen, bass guitarist Roger Whittet and drummer Boyd Smith, three of four originally hail from Carlton County. Clark and Petersen are from Cloquet, Smith from Esko and Whittet grew up in Lino Lakes. Now,...
The road from Cloquet youth player to Division I college hockey, professional hockey, and now coaching, has been a fun one for former Lumberjack hockey player Westin Michaud. Last week it was announced that Michaud was named head coach and general manager of the Ice Bats, an Austin, Texas, team in the North American Tier III Hockey League. "After I decided to hang up the skates, I was contacted by seven or eight different junior teams," Michaud said. "I was offered a bunch of assistant jobs, but...
