  • Esko pivots re-opening to hybrid, other county school plans vary

    Jana Peterson|Aug 28, 2020

The Esko school board decided this week that the district won't have all students in classrooms as planned at the start of the school year Sept. 8. Based on the number of coronavirus cases at the time of the meeting in both Carlton and St. Louis counties - as they pull students from both - the board decided to start at Level Two of the state's guidance on re-opening. While case numbers in Carlton County remain low enough to allow for in-person classes as Esko had planned earlier in the month,...

  • Cloquet schools still on for in-class opening

    Jana Peterson|Aug 28, 2020

It's official. Cloquet students will return to school in-person after Labor Day, unless they choose individually to opt out for distance learning. The decision came when it did based on two factors. One, that the state told school districts they must inform families of how school will start - with in-person, hybrid or distance learning models - at least two weeks before the start date, which is Wednesday, Sept. 9 for Cloquet. And second, they waited for the most recent report from Minnesota Depa...

  • Lumberjacks girls soccer shoots for another state run

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 28, 2020

If local girls soccer teams think the Lumberjacks will be a pushover this season due to losing the area's top player Kiana Bender, they should think again. The Cloquet girls soccer team appears ready and poised to make another run at the Section 7 title by virtue of both depth and talent. It's also a program that showed how well they could play together, advancing to the state tournament last year with a balanced attack and a strong defense. "Our record last year was 18-3 and we were 14-2 in...

  • Experience will mark tennis team

    Jack Slater|Aug 28, 2020

Tennis is back, and the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls team isn't letting Covid-19 stop them. With 38 girls on the team this year, coach Derek Johnson said that "is the most we've seen on the roster in the past 10 years." Johnson said they return six full-time varsity players, giving the team a strong core to build around. Johnson said the larger team includes a lot more Esko girls than he expected, including a number of volleyball players whose season was postponed to spring because of the...

  • 'Jacks packed with seasoned seniors

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 28, 2020

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer coach Dave Bergan is entering his second year at the helm of the Lumberjacks. Last season the 'Jacks finished with a record of 8-9-1, but with the return of a mass of seniors, Bergan is hoping the squad can parlay huge numbers into big success. Just how many seniors will this year's version of the Lumberjacks have on the roster? "We have 12 seniors on the team this year," Bergan said. "The goal is to become conference champs and move that success to the state...

  • Esko girls soccer looks for top spot again

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 28, 2020

As the new high school sports season arrives, the Esko girls soccer team will be looking to improve on a team that finished under .500 in the win-loss column last year. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Caitlin Lilly, the Eskomos hope to regain their position as one of the top teams in Section 7. "We have five seniors this year and we expect our seniors to command the center of the field," Lilly said. After their 6-9-0 record last year, the Eskomos lost two stellar players, as...

  • Want to see a soccer match?

    Jana Peterson|Aug 28, 2020

In the age of coronavirus, admission isn't a sure thing anymore. Minnesota schools can have only 250 spectators at soccer games (including game workers) and none at swim meets. "Area schools decided we needed a plan, as nobody wanted to be turning parents or grandparents away, especially if they have driven from another school to watch the game," activities director Paul Riess said. Every school with a soccer team in the area agreed to follow the same policy, he explained. Players from each...

  • Korby's Connections: Baker scorches Cloquet course

    Steve Korby|Aug 28, 2020

Cloquet High School senior Sam Baker made history on a cloudy day a couple weeks ago, when he set the course record at the Cloquet Country Club on Aug. 12, shooting a record 62 on the par-71 course. With the completion of the new nine holes at Cloquet Country Club in 2001, the course record of 63 was tallied quite a few years back by local amateur great Don McKay. Now it is Baker's record to break. Golfing with Sam was his dad, Bruce, and his twin older brothers, John and Nick. Mom Pam Baker...

  • Wrenshall News: We need a tomatillo spirit

    Anne Dugan|Aug 28, 2020

I have a small plot on the farm that I use to experiment and play - growing things such as artichoke, eggplant, or tomatillo. That last plant is irrepressible. I started growing tomatillos five years ago and every year I have so many volunteer plants that they could probably count as a perennial weed. Even the yellow spindles that I started from seed and forgot in pots grew into flourishing shrubs dripping with green fruit. It was this resilience and energy that came to mind as I talked with...

    Jennie K. Hanson|Aug 28, 2020

Congratulations to Brad Koivisto of Cromwell, who recently won the first Brainerd $10K Bracket National at the Brainerd International Raceway. This big payout attracted nearly 200 amateur racers and Brad outlasted them all. He raced his 1974 Chevelle GTO and usually races in the BIR’s stock/super stock class. Brad said he considered himself a longshot to win and was there to support the track and enjoy the weekend. But he soon found himself in the winner’s circle. After getting into the fif...

    Minnesota Public Radio|Aug 28, 2020

The McKnight Foundation has chosen author Marcie Rendon to receive its 2020 Distinguished Artist Award. The annual award recognizes a Minnesota artist who has made significant contributions to the state's cultural life. • Covid numbers still rising

    Pine Knot News|Aug 28, 2020

Numbers of people testing positive for Covid-19 continue to climb in Carlton County, with case numbers increasing at a more rapid rate as the summer draws to an end. It should be noted, however, that case numbers are still relatively low here. Cases have grown by 59 cases from July 30 (120) to August 26 (179), and by 20 cases from last Tuesday, Aug. 18, to Aug. 26 alone. Over the month of July the number of cases grew by 37, from 83 to 120. Anyone who has symptoms of Covid-19 or who has been exposed to someone they think may have the disease is...

    Pine Knot News|Aug 28, 2020

Two Carlton County senior living facilities — Cloquet’s Evergreen Knoll and New Perspective in Cloquet — remain on the state list of congregate care facilities that have reported a Covid-19 exposure at the facility. Exposure is defined as a person diagnosed with Covid-19 who either visited, worked, or lived at a congregate care facility while they were contagious. It doesn’t necessarily mean that any residents were infected with the coronavirus....

  • Teenager brings comfort to mask wearing

    Caleb Swanson|Aug 28, 2020

While some 14-year-olds keep busy playing video games or watching movies during a pandemic quarantine, Cloquet's Ryan Huls has taken up a more productive hobby. In the midst of the global pandemic, Huls did his part using a 3-D printer to make "ear savers" and ventilator splitters. Ear savers are a device placed on the head that holds the mask straps instead of hooking behind the ears, which can irritate after extended mask use. The flat plastic connector rests on the back of a person's head...

  • State wants to ramp up saliva tests to meet demand

    Minnesota Public Radio|Aug 28, 2020

Faced with demand for more Covid-19 tests this fall, the state is using $14 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to build capacity by doing up to 30,000 saliva tests daily. The strategy relies on a saliva-based test developed by Vault Health and Rutgers University that can be done at home. Minnesota is already doing 22,000 tests daily. But Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm said more than doubling that capacity with saliva tests will help meet demand for tests as schools reopen. “For schools, it’s going to be critically imp...

  • Esko fields get shiny new parking lot to match

    Aug 28, 2020

The Esko sports fields that were redone only a few years ago now have a beautiful new parking lot to match. Over the spring and summer, workers tore down the old bus barn that used to sit in the middle of the gravel parking lot off Canosia Road and built a new bus garage in the northwest corner of the Esko business park. That freed up lots of space for parking in the newly paved lot adjacent to the athletic complex, which features locker rooms and a concession stand, fields for football,...
