Cloquet Country Club hosted the Dan Sheff adult-child golf tournament last weekend, Aug. 24-25. Nearly 180 players participated, ranging from age 7 to over 80. The Cromwell Park Pavilion grand opening on Aug. 23 was a big success. There were several talks, workshops, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation booths, lawn games and, best of all, food. On Friday, from a galaxy far, far away, the original Star Wars movie will return to Cloquet, this time with the dialogue dubbed in Ojibwe. "Anangong Miigaading," aka "Star Wars: A New Hope" will show for one week at Cloquet's Premiere Theatres. Donna Juntunen passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2024, with family by her side, one day before the date her beloved husband passed away three years ago. She was born June 9, 1933, in Cloquet to Melti and Ellen Mattson. The family resided on Dunlap Island when she was young. They moved to Esko and Donna began high school in the ninth grade. Marlys Marie (Ojibway) Anderson, 95, lifetime resident of Cloquet, passed away peacefully to be with Jesus on Aug. 22, 2024. Her son, Tom, was by her side. She was born Oct. 19, 1928, to Wilfred and Marcelline (Bassett) Ojibway. Marlys attended Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parochial school and graduated with the Cloquet High School class of 1947. Ronnie Merle Thompson, 66, of Sturgeon Lake passed away Aug. 25, 2024, in his home with his wife by his side. Ronnie was born Nov. 15, 1957, to Merle and Jean (Haglund) Thompson at the Butler Hospital maternity ward in Cloquet. He grew up in Blackhoof Township and graduated from Carlton High School in 1975. Betty Carol Wilkinson, 94, went to be with Jesus her Savior on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. She was the first child of Joseph and Beatrice (Tuttle) Goldfine, born on Christmas Day in 1929 in Superior. She graduated from Superior Central in 1948. Betty married her loving husband, Richard "Wilks" Wilkinson, on Dec. 2, 1949. Together, they raised their three children in Scanlon.
