  • Crossing into the school year

    Jana Peterson|Sep 6, 2019

The first day of school brought an extra adventure for Cloquet Middle School students who walked to and from school Wednesday after Washington Avenue got a complete redo this summer. Stop signs were replaced by flashing lights that were difficult to see in the bright afternoon sun Wednesday, so it is a good thing crossing guard Denise Risberg will be there before and after school with her orange flag. Risberg was showing kids how to push the button to turn on the caution lights. Drivers still...

  • He lost a toe, but plays on

    Caleb Swanson|Sep 6, 2019

If Mason Avey could offer one piece of advice, it would be to wear steel toe boots when mowing. Avey learned that lesson the hard way this summer. Two weeks before the football season, the Cloquet High School junior was mowing a small but steep hill in his front yard. He slipped on damp grass and jammed his foot into the spinning blades of the mower. "It didn't hurt, but I had a big shock," he said. Mason was rushed to the emergency room, to be told by doctors that his severed big toe was "not f...

  • Wright-Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Sep 6, 2019

As I sat down to type this week’s news I noticed that the date is a numerical palindrome, 9-1-19, meaning it can be read forward or backward and it’s the same number. There will be 10 more like it this month. They are: 9-10-19, 9-11-19, 9-12-19, 9-13-19, 9-14-19, 9-15-19, 9-16-19, 9-17-19, 9-18-19 and 9-19-19. The next one won’t be until 2-2-22. There are only 38 palindrome numbers in this century and we get to observe 11 of them this month. The End-of-the-Summer Party this weekend at the Cromw...

  • Labor get its tradition on

    Pine Knot News staff|Sep 6, 2019

These buttons are united in their support of working men and women. "Unions: Keeping America Great," proclaimed the 2017 button. "Right to Work provides No Rights and No Work," the red and blue button said in 2017. "Solidarity" was the simple message in 1982. And this year's 2019 Labor Day button promised "Blood, Sweat & Tears, Another 100 Years!" In truth, the city's been celebrating its labor roots more than 100 years, but that was last week's story. This story is about the now, when Cloquet...

  • Expect a cool, wet month

    Dave Anderson|Sep 6, 2019

Last month, I mentioned how I inherited weather almanacs from the 1920s to the 1990s from a farmer who had passed away. Well, I also have a stack of National Geographic issues from the 1910s to the 1980s. One from 1913 had a long article about a game camera a fellow invented. The critter would trip a line that fired off a tray of that old fashioned flash powder used for old-time photography. The result was a photo of an animal running away from the bang of the exploding powder which could be...

  • 'Oldtimers' receive annual honors

    Jordan Allen|Sep 6, 2019

The Carlton County Labor Day celebration is known for its parade and picnic on Monday, but the fun actually starts a day earlier at the annual Oldtimers Banquet. "This event's main purpose is to honor the retirees of the Carlton County labor force," said Rep. Mike Sundin of District 11A, one of the event organizers. Sundin said the teachers, millworkers, and other union workers who worked to create equal opportunities for all laborers should be celebrated. One of the banquet's most notable...

  • This week in state history

    Pine Knot News|Sep 6, 2019

Historic Minnesota events that took place Sept. 6-12: Sept. 6 1889 Bob Younger dies in the Minnesota State Prison at Stillwater, where he was serving a life sentence for his role in the Jesse James/Cole Younger gang’s Northfield bank raid on Sept. 7, 1876. First National Bank bookkeeper Joseph Lee Heywood delays the robbery by refusing to open the vault and pays with his life. A gunfight in the streets of Northfield follows; two of the robbers die and two more are wounded in the fight. A posse catches up with the gang at Madelia a few days l...

  • Fond du Lac flag now flies at Cloquet City Hall

    Jana Peterson|Sep 6, 2019

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa flag now flies in the Cloquet city council chambers, a reminder to those who do business there that the borders of the Fond du Lac Reservation and Cloquet overlap and the two entities cannot thrive separately. Charlie Smith, or "Nenaaw" in Anishinaabe, offered tobacco to everyone in the room, as well as to the drum itself, after the Cedar Creek drum group finished two songs and the flag was placed behind the council dais. They presented the flag so...

    Jana Peterson|Sep 6, 2019

Longtime Cloquet Sappi mill manager Mike Schultz is leaving town after being promoted to vice president of manufacturing for Sappi North America. The promotion means Schultz will relocate to Boston, but will still have a hand in how things are run in Cloquet, overseeing manufacturing operations at the company's four North American mills (including Cloquet), a sheeting facility in Pennsylvania and the Westbrook Technology Center in Maine. • Speed limits changed on Highway 73

    Pine Knot News|Sep 6, 2019

The speed limit changed this week along Highway 73 in Carlton County, thanks to actions in 2014, when the Minnesota Legislature directed the Department of Transportation to evaluate its two-lane, two-way, 55-mph highways to determine whether speed limits could be reasonably and safely increased. Speed limits on Highway 73 will increase from 55 mph to 60 mph: • between Kettle River and milepost 18 (south of the curves prior to Carlton Highway 4) • between Cromwell and U.S. Highway 2 • between Floodwood and Highway 169 in Hibbing The speed limit...

  • Cloquet's free closet idea takes off

    Jana Peterson|Sep 6, 2019

There's a new, highly exclusive clothes store in town, but it caters only to Cloquet teenagers. Oh, and did we mention that the clothes are all free? The new CHS Community Closet was born out of a discussion between Cloquet High School paraprofessional Shelley Robideaux and physical education teacher Brenda Gigliotti. "Last year before Christmas we put together something almost like a garage sale, but everything was free," Robideaux said, explaining that teachers, staff and others donated...

  • Our View: School merger is a no-brainer

    Pine Knot News|Sep 6, 2019

Did you hear that crowd roar in Carlton last Friday night? Funny how things work out when you just put heads together and do the logical thing. That’s what began to happen last fall when Carlton and Wrenshall football coaches saw they had a problem with fielding teams. Some years, the districts had to scrap seasons because they couldn’t fill out rosters. So began the idea of the two long-time rivals sharing a football program. It was working with cross-country, so why not football? It seems from the start that students were never the pro...

  • Harry's Gang: Our parks should be used - a lot

    Pete Radosevich|Sep 6, 2019

Cloquet Ford, one of the community’s prominent high-profile small businesses, has held a sales event at Veterans Park in Cloquet a couple of times in the past, but when it went to reserve the park for another event this fall, its permit was denied. Apparently, last year, some complaints were made about commercial use of the park, and whether a car sales event is an appropriate use for a city park. At that time, city officials had researched the zoning rules and regulations, and determined t...

  • On faith

    Matt Kohl|Sep 6, 2019

When I was growing up, one of my favorite fall traditions was to get together with my family and friends at my grandparents' house for our weekly gatherings around their backyard fireplace. These get-togethers were joyous occasions that included hours of conversations, storytelling and laughter. But perhaps my favorite memory of bonfire times at my grandparents' house was all of the food. Large dinners when we got there and large snacks afterwards around the fire: s'mores, hot dogs and fire-popp...

  • Thanks for the great summer intern experience

    Jordan Allen|Sep 6, 2019

As the final days of summer slowly run out, so does my summer internship with the Pine Knot News. From the first article to my last, I've enjoyed the opportunity to help tell the story of our county and the people who live here. However, school and extracurriculars leave me with little time to devote to the weekly interviewing and writing. This school year, I plan to continue to write for the Pine Knot, but the time constraints that inevitably come with the school year will not allow me to...

  • Bulldogs knock down Lumberjacks

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 6, 2019

Everyone in the area expected the Carlton volleyball team to be a tough squad this season. The Bulldogs feature a load of experience, talent and a ton of grit - an often lethal combination to opponents. The Lumberjacks saw that talent up close on Tuesday when the Bulldogs walked into the Cloquet middle school gym and took an easy 25-13, 25-14 and 25-6 victory over the 'Jacks. "We started a little slow, but that is tough after a long weekend and the first day of school," Carlton coach Barb...

  • Finn News for September

    Kim Samuelson|Sep 6, 2019

Fall is the time to harvest the garden, start getting property ready for winter, send children back to school, and go back to regular meeting schedules. Regular schedules of the local Finnish groups will not be the focus of this article, however, so you will have to contact those groups as to what is on their September schedules. Here are some fantastic opportunities that are coming. I plan to attend a good share of them, and I encourage you to mark your calendars and make plans to attend, too. A great way to start your fall is by attending...
