  • Great expectation, surprise at triangular

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 11, 2020

There was a lot of the expected mixed with a little of the unexpected last Thursday as Esko, Carlton/Wrenshall and Cromwell-Wright hooked up in a cross country race at Pine Valley in Cloquet. The Cardinals had the top two individual finishers in both the boys and girls varsity races and the Eskomos took first place as a team followed by the Raptors in the boys meet. The girls race saw Carlton/Wrenshall nab team honors with Esko taking second. Cromwell-Wright did not have the required five...

  • 'Jacks swarm the net

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 11, 2020

With 12 seniors on his roster and a plethora of talent, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton boys soccer coach Dave Bergan must feel like he robbed a bank. After four matches this season, the Lumberjacks have averaged 8.75 goals per game while giving up less than a goal a game. Needless to say the 'Jacks are 4-0 heading into their next home game Sept. 17 versus perennial power Duluth East. It promises to be the toughest match yet. "This is just an amazing group of young men," said Bergan, in his second year at...

  • Families flock to annual parent-child tournament

    Steve Korby|Sep 11, 2020

The end of August and Labor Day weekend usually signify the beginning of the end of summer in northeastern Minnesota. It is also the scheduled time for the Dan Sheff Memorial Parent Child Golf Tournament at the Cloquet Country Club. This year, 79 teams and nearly 150 golfers participated in the annual event during the last weekend of August. Covid-19 restrictions were prevalent and perfect outdoor weather helped make the tournament safe for entrants. Don McKay and his son Anthony won this...

  • Korby's Connections: Bergstedt's 1955 Esko team made history

    Steve Korby|Sep 11, 2020

This year marked the 65th anniversary of Carlton County's first foray into the Minnesota State High School Basketball Tournament. Led by superstar Harold Bergstedt, Esko qualified for the tourney in March of 1955 at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. Bergstedt passed away at age 82 in February. The state basketball tournament began in 1913 and no team from Carlton County was able to win Region 7 and advance to the tourney until Esko's achievement 42 years later. The region...

  • Wrenshall News: Change is in the air this fall

    Anne Dugan|Sep 11, 2020

By the time this paper hits your mailbox, we will have had one partial week of school under our belts. We will have either had a hard frost or we will have been given another week of needed growth for our final shares of tomatoes and peppers. By the time you read this column our family will have established a new schedule and know where we are going on each day and who will pick up whom and what to pack for lunch. We will know how much space the fall cabbage will need in the root cellar. For me,...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Sep 11, 2020

Happy Grandparents Day on Sept. 13. A grandparent is someone who cares for you and in all things you try to do. A grandparent always has a ready smile and is willing to go that extra mile. Remember your grandparents with laughter and joy recalling the days when you were a little girl or boy. Here’s a quote I read recently: “I wouldn’t change my grandchildren for the world, but I wish I could change the world for my grandchildren.” I remember my grandmother Minnie Dahlman well. She was my dad...

  • Carlton happenings

    Leola Rodd|Sep 11, 2020

As we all know, school has started, but it wasn’t like the first day of school that I remember. As a child, I looked forward to wearing the new outfit and shoes that I got to start the school year. It was exciting to see classmates that I hadn’t seen all summer, since my family lived in the country. This year, kids who start school in person are wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and washing their hands many times a day, and maintaining 6 feet between desks. The teacher who greets each stu...

  • A donation built to last

    Jana Peterson|Sep 11, 2020

When teachers at Cloquet's Washington Elementary School put out a plea for some picnic tables, it didn't take long for one family to step up. "This post struck a chord in us because we are friends with many of the teachers and have personal ties to the school since our daughters attended Washington," Christina Rock said. ButJeff and Christina Rock didn't just donate some spare picnic tables. The entire Rock family worked together to create two special tables for the school, built to last and...

  • Signs of the times

    Pine Knot News|Sep 11, 2020

There have been a number of reports of stolen or damaged political signs. Above, Jim Crowley's yard in Cloquet is awash in signs offering many messages to folks walking or driving by, but he brings his signs inside every night because he doesn't want them to be stolen. Below, Tony Sheda and Cindy Bourn said they repaired a Donald Trump sign outside Frandsen Bank and the Maytag Laundry in Cloquet about 10 times, with strangers helping out more than once (pictured). Because of repeated vandalism...

  • Sutter Brothers event rescheduled for Sept. 19

    Sep 11, 2020

The Sons of Norway is sponsoring a free performance by the Sutter Brothers next weekend. Bring your own chair and find a good spot outside the Oldenburg House in Carlton from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Bart and Ross Sutter have established individual reputations as a musician and a writer, but when they perform as a pair their work has the kind of counterpoint and easy intimacy unique to sibling acts. A Sutter Brothers performance is a fun-filled blend of music, storytelling, and poetry, highlighting their small town, preacher's kid roots...
