  • Inking a bond across generations

    Mike Creger|Oct 4, 2024

Donna Shaw pushes her wheeled walker down the middle of Duluth Tattoo Company, headed for Jenna Walton's station. The artist inked an 83-year-old recently, so the 85-year-old Donna isn't much of a surprise on this Thursday in West Duluth. Donna is cool as a deep fall day, cracking wise here and there. This is old hat for her. "Wherever they couldn't find a wrinkle," she says of the tattoo she got five years ago. The angel holding a heart on her forearm matches the ones her daughter, Deb...

  • Cold weather rule in effect

    Oct 4, 2024

Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule is in place from Oct. 1 to April 30 each year. Under this state statute, eligible residential energy customers are protected from service disconnection for these seven months if the disconnection would affect the customer’s primary heating source. Customers must set up and keep a monthly payment plan to be protected. If customers have a past-due balance on their bill or are struggling to keep up, they should contact their provider to explore options and set up a payment plan to avoid disconnection. The Cold Wea...

Aim high. Shoot for the stars. Dream big. For Lynn Tredeau, a 1979 Cloquet Senior High School graduate, her reality is living out a dream bigger than she could have ever imagined. Tredeau is a professional solo piano artist and composer who now resides in Idaho. She grew up in Cloquet and was known then as Lynn DeRocher before marrying Al Tredeau. Her music falls into the contemporary instrumental category or solo piano instrumental category, a style of music also known as mindful music. "I...

    Oct 4, 2024

The National Weather Service issued a "Red Flag Warning" this week for 39 counties in central, northeast, northwest, and southwest Minnesota due to extreme fire danger. The warning means fires can spread quickly and easily progress out of control under dry and windy weather conditions. Burning any materials is not advised under the warning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will not issue or activate open burning permits for large vegetative debris burning during a Red Flag Warning,...

  • Housing study provides data for future

    Jana Peterson|Oct 4, 2024

A new Cloquet/Scanlon housing study aims to build on the success of a similar study 10 years ago. That study led to support for more rental housing: both Carlton Lofts and the White Pine Apartments were created since then. But the need for housing here and across the region continues to grow, with an estimated 431 housing units needed for a range of incomes. At the same time, the blue collar manufacturing jobs that were the bread and butter here are stable, but lower-paid service sector jobs...

  • New flags fly at middle shool

    Oct 4, 2024

On October 29, 2024 a presentation of flags was held at the Cloquet Post 3979 V.F.W. Cloquet Middle School students had previously approached VFW commander Ron Stigers with a request for flags to be displayed in their classrooms. "It was a request near and dear to our hearts," Stigers said. When the Disabled Amercan Veterans, American Legion, and the Eagles organizations heard about the request, they wanted to help too. A total of 54 flags were donated by the four organizations. They are hoping...

    Brady Slater|Oct 4, 2024

A 44-year-old Saginaw man faces multiple felony charges following his alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl under his care earlier this summer. Lane Lowell Smith surrendered to authorities Sept. 23, and was charged with three felony crimes, including two first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges and a third for soliciting a child to engage in sexual conduct. Smith faces a fourth gross misdemeanor charge for contributing to the delinquency of a child after allegedly providing the victim with alcohol and THC products prior to the assault. The...

  • Guilty plea in fatal car-pedestrian case

    Jana Peterson|Oct 4, 2024

A 22-year-old man who hit and killed a pedestrian in Moose Lake in March admitted Wednesday he was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs when the crash occurred. Brent James Keranen, of Pengilly, Minnesota, pleaded guilty to one count of felony criminal vehicular homicide while under the influence of cannabis/hemp edible products. Under the terms of a plea agreement with the prosecution, three other charges of felony criminal vehicular homicide will be dropped. Sentencing is scheduled for December, and defense attorney David Keegan...

  • Church celebrates 125 years

    Oct 4, 2024

The 125th anniversary celebration at Our Savior's Lutheran Church last Sunday was a chance for parishioners to, as Pastor Luke Lekander said, "look back" and "move forward." "Moving forward requires us to change. But I don't want to change simply for the sake of change," Lekander wrote in his weekly message after the lunch and service Sept. 29. "The changes we make must be theologically rooted and always for the purpose of sharing and living out the gospel of Jesus Christ. ... The time has come...

  • Local poet stays creative with latest collection

    Oct 4, 2024

Carlton County teacher, naturalist and poet Patrick Stevens has released a second book of poetry, titled "Natural Wonders." The new poetry book follows the author through his wanderings in each distinct season of the Minnesota year. He begins his journey in winter, the longest season, dealing with dying plants, frost, frozen lakes, major snowfalls, animal tracks and habitat, before moving on to spring and the welcome rebirth of plants and animals. Summer is his joyous time, bringing long days...

  • Letter to the editor: Dotseth has done many things for us

    Oct 4, 2024

It was appalling to me that this newspaper printed three opinions in their Letters to the Editor section last week that were all one-sided and did not print any for our hard working Rep. Jeff Dotseth. It’s also not surprising since Jeff’s opponent owns this newspaper. The opposing party must be getting very nervous about losing the race. I have known Jeff personally for the last six years. He is hard working and wants to represent everyone in his district. Jeff has worked tirelessly, despite the one party rule the last two years, to make life b...

  • Letter to the editor: Dotseth shouldn't represent this district

    Oct 4, 2024

What kind of man is Jeff Dotseth? One we shouldn’t vote for. We’re writing to share our concerns about the allegations against Rep. Dotseth. He has been accused of domestic abuse, animal abuse and racist behavior, over a period of a decade — not exactly a one-time mistake or lapse in judgment, or an isolated incident, or a report from only one person. In our opinion, it’s pretty simple: A man accused of domestic abuse should not be in a position to limit women’s rights to control their bodies. A man who had his own guns legally removed f...

  • Knot Pining: Just a quick grocery trip ...

    Mike Creger|Oct 4, 2024

It broke the bank and nearly broke my spirit. The other day, hankering for some good old chili on a brisk, er, hot, fall day, me and the kid went to the store. My mind just happened to be on point, so, with a working list in my head, I made a few other purchases beyond the soup recipe I also keep in my brain. I knew it would be a mistake. There were paper products and batteries involved, along with the need to find mid-morning school snacks for the kid for the next few weeks. For the first time in my life, I spent more than $200 on a single...

  • Down on the farm: A chance to chat about farming

    Sandy Dugan|Oct 4, 2024

Issues that get farmers to devote a morning of discussion during harvest time must be important. Resolutions about the Cloquet Forestry Center, local milk processing, and County Extension programs drew a dozen busy agriculture practitioners to the annual meeting of the Carlton County chapter of the Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU). The group is comprised of specialists in livestock, dairy, vegetables, berries, and agritourism, as well as Carlton County director of development Ryan Pervenanze. Chair...

  • A 49-0 homecoming blast

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 4, 2024

The Cloquet football team didn't disappoint a large homecoming crowd Friday as they pounded out a 49-0 win over Proctor. "We came out and did what we were supposed to do against a team that is trying to rebuild their program," said Cloquet coach Jeff Ojanen. It took until there was 2:42 remaining in the first quarter before the 'Jacks were able to get on the scoreboard - but the 65-yard touchdown scamper by Aiden Nelson opened the floodgates. Soccer player Max Sundquist would find himself...

  • Runners pacing for section

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 4, 2024

The Cloquet boys and girls cross country teams are slowly and quietly building towards sectionals. The Lumberjacks boys return two runners who made the state meet last season. They hope to see an even greater number make it to State this fall. "For the boys team, we return the entire team except one runner," said Cloquet coach Chandra Allen. "Andrew Shepherd and Evan Rothamel both made it to state last year for us in cross country." With 25 boys out for the team, Allen is blessed with a large...

  • Esko continues its winning ways

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 4, 2024

The Esko girls soccer team is regarded as one of the top Section 7A teams every year, and this season is no exception. Esko entered Monday's game against Duluth Denfeld with a gaudy 10 wins and only three losses, at the hands of some of the top teams in the area. Esko dominated play against Denfeld, but was unable to get a ball into the net and settled for a 0-0 tie against the Hunters. "We had a ton of opportunities," said Esko coach Sharon Lahti. "We had so many shots, but their goaltender pla...

  • Korby's Connections: Scanlon's general takes time out on golf course

    Steve Korby|Oct 4, 2024

Scanlon is proud of its youngsters who grew up to become teachers, ministers, medical experts, lawyers, firefighters, machinists, papermakers, politicians, scientists, bartenders, bankers, musicians, and many others who got their early start at the elementary school on Dewey Avenue. To my knowledge, only one Scanlon grade school graduate has ever become a military general. Rich Johnston, who grew up on 23rd Street and Lincoln Avenue, retired as an Air Force general. Per military statistics,...

  • Wilderness at home this week

    Oct 4, 2024

The Minnesota Wilderness remain at .500 after a slate of games in the North American Hockey League’s Showcase Tournament in Blaine last week. The Cloquet-based team is now 3-3-1 on the season. The tourney began Wednesday, Sept. 25 against Northeast. The Wilderness held leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but could not hold on in a 4-3 loss. Just 34 seconds after Lucas Jendek posted a second-period goal to give Minnesota a 2-0 advantage, the Generals got on the board to make it 2-1. Northeast then scored early in the third to tie the contest at 2. Minnesota b...

  • Hunting success isn't in the bag

    Oct 4, 2024

I hastily loaded my car and headed west in late September. The trees lining the highways showed hints of fall colors. I cranked up the Jim Croce CDs I've listened to hundreds of times and sang along carefree. The duck opener was on the horizon. The lakes, surrounded by graying landscape, seemed to glow in the dimming light as I approached our Traverse County campsite. When I arrived, I listened to my father-in-law explain how the next morning would work, despite the fact I'd been up since 1...
