Our readers are delivering the goods as we experience an extraordinary fall color season. It came a bit early and popped very quickly. We expect there will be more great shots as October plods along. Email yours to [email protected]...
Here's a quick look at what fans can expect from area football teams in a shortened season. Aside from the continued pandemic prtocols around all high school sports, spectators will be limted at games. Cloquet If the Cloquet Lumberjack football team is going to compete for a sectional football title, they'll need to rely on strong line play. Fortunately, this year's version of the 'Jacks has what appears to be an impressive group in the trenches. "We will be very strong up front," said longtime...
Ready, set, stop! That has been the confusing world of volleyball programs throughout the Northland. In mid-March, just as the club season was about to begin, the schools were shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of the coaches had already gone through tryouts to determine which players would be on which club teams. Fees had been paid, uniforms handed out and a schedule of tournaments was set. Players were getting used to new coaches, teammates and for some, new positions. And then-...
Scores don't always indicate how close a tennis match can be. On Monday afternoon the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Grand Rapids in the first round of the Section 7AA tournament. While the score looks lopsided, what it does not show is that many of the matches were extremely tight and could have gone either way. CEC's Lydia Stone at No. 4 singles dropped a 2-1 match to Abby Gustafson, 6-7, 6-2 and 10-4. "I had a bunch of new girls this year and they now have...
Gerald Anderson recently called about a column I wrote about the 1955 Esko basketball state tournament team. Of the starting five that year, Jerry is the only one still alive after he lost friend and fellow starter Don Terwey, who died on Sept. 30. Jerry said he met Terwey when Terwey moved to Esko in the fourth grade. They were lifelong friends and had a hunting shack together for many years, Jerry said. Jerry was one of the starting guards on the 1955 team. He offered some of his memories of...
As winter approaches, you may think your outdoor projects are done for the year, but if you have buckthorn removal on your list of chores, late fall and early winter are great times to get it done. Why is buckthorn bad? There are many reasons this invasive, non-native shrub is better taken out than left to take over our native woodlands. • Competes and crowds out native plants for nutrients, light, and moisture • Degrades important wildlife habitat and food sources • Can host pests, such as crow...
The 2021 Carlton County Historical Society’s barn calendars are available at the Pine Knot News office in Cloquet, Widdes Farm and Feed in Esko, and TJ’s in Mahtowa. You can also call Barb Dahl at 218-355-8644 or 644-3691. Calendars are $10 each. Three of this year’s featured barns are Mark Groth’s barn, the Samuelson barn and the Mattila brothers’ barn (now owned by Robert and Darci Dahl). I’m not sure, but I’m pretty sure that the late Carl Hanson built two of these barns back in the day. C...
Due to Covid-19 and social distancing mandates, the 11th annual Minnesota Sings competition took place virtually this year. Participants submitted videos of their performances via YouTube. Sawyer resident Joseph Kotiranta, one of two candidates sponsored by the Cromwell Area Community Club, won first place in the age 13-to-20 group. Cromwell-Wright student Aurora Gervais, a first-time competitor, ranked in the top five. Kotiranta chose Antônio Carlos Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema," singing it...
There are lots of birthdays this month at Villa Vista and Cardinal Court in Cromwell. Roy Miller, formerly of Meadowlands, marked his 100th birthday on Oct. 8. He is living at the Cardinal Court and enjoys the company of many new friends. Roy was 72 years old when he got his first bicycle. It was a 21-speed mountain bike, although he says he never got it out of third gear. Larry (Lawrence Peter William) Switzer, 93, of the Cardinal Court, was born Oct. 4, 1927, in the Kettle River area. He went...
Maybe Donald Trump is the best president for our nation at this time. Too often I read some of our local papers knowing that certain writers will present a point of view implying Trump is always right and everything he does is good. It’s just the “others” who cannot see all the good he has done. Although I don’t agree with everything Trump does, I do believe he is the best person for president at this time in our history as a nation. His methods and behavior may not be the best. But I believe he has shown us who we are as a people. After joinin...
