  • Carlton Happenings

    Leola Rodd|Mar 11, 2022

As we all know, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. It is the Irish celebration of the day St. Patrick is said to have cast out the snakes from Ireland. But there is also another celebration the day before, St. Urho’s Day, on March 16. The Urho legend includes the story of St. Urho casting out the frogs by the power of his voice, which he got by drinking feelia sour (sour whole milk) and eating kala mojakka (fish soup). Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy St. Urho’s Day to all! Kindergarten roundup...

  • History mystery

    Pine Knot News|Mar 11, 2022

Art Gist recognized the old 1953 Dodge truck he still owns in the History Mystery photo we shared a few weeks ago. "Sitting on the fender of my truck is my son Anthony Gist," Art said. "He doesn't remember the other two kids. Their class was reading 'The Grapes of Wrath' and they were doing a food shelf drive." The photo is marked at the Carlton County Historical Society as from Feb. 21, 1998, in the parking lot at Super One. Art shared a more recent photo of the truck....

There were four Carlton County teams in the competition, from Cloquet, Esko, Barnum and Moose Lake. Esko came away with the biggest honors: a run in the playoffs, a top award for innovation in controlling its robot, and a sure place in the state tournament....

The Classy Moose on 61 has something for everyone, even some four-legged friends. A black cat named Tank and Gus (a dog) greet shoppers when they enter the thrift store and auction site in Barnum. "Tank is a rescue," said Dawn Schubert, one of the owners of the Classy Moose and the online auction, Classic 61 Sales, located in the same building. "He is the best-known cat in Carlton County. He just loves people. One little girl sat on the floor and played with him while her mother shopped." The Cl...

Carlton County Zoning and Environmental Services administrator Heather Cunningham gave her annual report to the county board Tuesday, saying it was a year of change with three new staff in the department. She thought it was good to have a fresh view of some of the programs they run. Sixty new homes were built in the county and there was an increase in construction activity. At the transfer station, recycling used mattresses is going to cost more. Clean mattresses will be processed now for $20 and wet mattresses will be taken for $24, with...

  • Our View: Get whole story on assessments

    Pine Knot News|Mar 11, 2022

Whoa there, Facebook commenters. While we are gratified that last week’s Pine Knot story on the county board meeting got huge traffic on Facebook, we are disturbed that all but one of the comments (as of Wednesday) seem to indicate that the people writing them didn’t read the story. That’s unfortunate. Our story focused on a warning from Carlton County auditor Kyle Holmes that the estimated market value of properties is going up by at least 30 percent for 2023. That means if your home was worth $150,000 last year, it will be worth close to $1...

  • Harry's Gang: Energy woes bring me back to the late 1970s

    Pine Knot News|Mar 11, 2022

With the price of energy rising rapidly, I started getting a little sentimental over the energy crisis many of us remember from the late 1970s. I was in about the eighth grade when my father, struggling to make ends meet in his tavern along the North Shore, had a woodburning stove installed in our basement. Times had been tough: not only was my father inexperienced at running a tavern, the economy was in rough shape in Lake County. The railroad and the taconite plant were laying off workers, and tourism had crawled to a standstill as the...

  • Letter to the editor: Prices rise and quantity ebbs

    Pine Knot News|Mar 11, 2022

On a recent visit to the Dollar Tree store, I discovered that it is no longer the Dollar Tree; it is now the $1.25 Tree. Most items, not all, but most, are now $1.25. That’s a 25-percent price hike. And I thought inflation was already high at 6 and 7 percent. I wonder if the name of the store will change. A local food store advertises on TV that they have low prices; not any more. We’ve all seen food prices lately and they are not low. I wonder if this might be classified as “false advertising.” Maybe the statement in the commercial needs a...

  • Letter to the editor: What would Harry do?

    Pine Knot News|Mar 11, 2022

As I watched the State of the Union address, I was not shocked but I was dismayed by the behavior of U.S. Rep. Lauren Bobert of Colorado and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia when they heckled the president of the United States. Being a student of Harry Truman for over 50 years, I asked myself, “What would Harry do?” One can never be certain what a president would do in any given situation, but a student of Truman, who has come to understand the motivations, the values, the demeanor of the man can make a considered approximation of his...
