  • An ode to fall (with photos)

    Oct 13, 2023

A poem by Patrick Stevens September Here lies the harvest fast piled rough with all we can stuff our chipmunk cheeks puffed and bulging or squirrels or ants or bees with their combs. I relish the ripeness of September just after the rot sets in; when last apples drop, deer come at night to feast on our fallen bounty; leaf edges brown here, then there, the maples, sweet and red, drip to the ground drowned in morning dew. In evening I see a thousand varied birds fowl big, fowl small flocking...

  • PHOTO STORY: Cloquet homecoming 2023

    Oct 13, 2023

Homecoming went a little differently at Cloquet High School this year, with no "home" football field. The coronation was celebrated during the high school pepfest Friday afternoon rather than halftime of the football game that evening in Proctor, the football team's home away from home while the Cloquet outdoor athletic complex is under construction. Saige Moran and Madysen Waters were crowned 2023 Cloquet Homecoming king and queen after a couple hours of pep session fun, including tricycle and...

  • Denfeld spoils 'Jacks homecoming

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 13, 2023

A slow start for the Cloquet football team proved costly against Denfeld in Proctor Friday, during Cloquet's homecoming-away-from-home game. Denfeld raced out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead and by halftime they were up 34-8 on their way to a 40-16 win. "They're an explosive and fast team," said Cloquet head coach Jeff Ojanen. "You can't give them back-to-back possessions on a short field, and that is exactly what we did." Denfeld took the opening kickoff and returned it to the Lumberjacks 48-yard...

  • Korby's Connections: Cromwell's basketball history is legendary

    Steve Korby|Oct 13, 2023

I attended the annual Harvest Festival at the Cromwell pavilion a few weeks ago. Scheduled for the first weekend after Labor Day every year, the festivities drew a good-sized crowd. Area residents were happy to get together and laugh, especially with the construction and its detours on Highway 210 now completed for the year. My resistance level being low, I sat next to my Eagle Lake neighbor at a picnic table to get details about the piece of pumpkin pie and ice cream he was sampling. It looked...

    Mike Creger|Oct 13, 2023

Do you know your French? In our continuing effort to get to the bottom of the business of where the Cloquet name came from, we found this front page of the Minneapolis newspaper, Echo de L'ouest, from February of 1918. It appears that the issue is profiling the state of things in the booming lumber city eight months before the devastating fire. The beginning of the article, using the very rudimentary French known by Pine Knot staffers, seems to describe where the name may have come from. We see...
