Haunted Ridge As the nights grow longer and Halloween approaches, there are some who gravitate toward the frightening and the macabre. And then there are those who don’t. A farm at 1781 County Road 1 (about halfway between Carlton and Wrenshall) aims to satisfy both inclinations. Home to two businesses operating side-by-side, Ru-Ridge Corn Maze offers wholesome family fun while the Haunted Shack — with its haunted hayride and haunted corn maze — offers shrieks and giggles after the sun goes down. In daylight, it is Ru-Ridge Corn Maze, a place...
Jim and Colleen Myhre have purchased the 29 Pines Golf Course in Mahtowa, closing on Sept. 4, and have renamed it Rugged Spruce Golf Club. "We had planned to keep the original course name," Jim Myhre said. "Outside experts" advised that it would be a good idea to change the 40-year-old name to better signify a fresh start. Roxanne Olson was the previous owner of the course. Jim grew up about two miles from the course. He thinks he first played there in about 1980. He played in a league there...

Peter Cox MPR News More people soon will be able to visit loved ones in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. The changes are set to go into effect on Saturday, Oct. 17.
