  • OUR VIEW: Short-term arena fix is an expensive wake-up call

    Oct 18, 2019

$52,000. That’s a lot of money to replace the refrigerant in the old “Barn,” especially since there is no guarantee this new batch of R-22 just won’t leak out again. Cloquet’s original indoor ice arena is showing its age, and the system under the floor that freezes the ice is old and in need of replacement or repair. Right now, though, all the refrigerant has leaked out and the City Council has agreed to spend the money to replace it, so we can have ice in The Barn this winter. Refilling the system with R-22 is the easiest and quickest...

  • GUEST VIEW: Column about Trump went too far

    Oct 18, 2019

When Barack Obama was elected president, and for the next eight years, I wrote many letters criticizing his policies. I knew that he had voted against bills outlawing partial birth abortion, in favor of gun control laws on law-abiding citizens, forced health care and more regulations, etc. At no time did I write about him personally. How could I? I didn’t know him. That is why a lot of us have a hard time seeing all the hate for President Donald Trump. He runs a gauntlet every day from dawn to dusk and beyond. He just puts his head down and g... Full story

  • HARRY'S GANG: It's not the government's fault

    Pete Radosevich|Oct 18, 2019

“Sorry to bother you on a Saturday, but my walk-in cooler isn’t working and if you can’t fix it today, I’ll have to throw everything out ... or do an awful lot of eating tonight!” That’s the voicemail I left Bruce Welman, co-owner of Aire Serv in Scanlon. (You’ve probably heard of them; they advertise more than McDonald’s, it seems.) Bruce is a pretty good guy. He started Bruce’s Refrigeration about the time I opened my pizza joint in Esko, and then teamed up with Dan Veno to start “Aire Serv...

  • ON THE MARK: What we know about artists

    Ann Markusen|Oct 18, 2019

We are learning a lot about industrial arts training and jobs these days, well-deserved and long overdue. But what about artists? Musicians, performing artists, writers, filmmakers, painters, photographers, designers and architects? An economist, I’ve been studying artists for almost 20 years: their aspirations, training, post-schooling work, and ways of relating to their patrons, audiences and publics. I started exploring data, mounting surveys, and interviewing many artists, hoping to learn a...

  • OUTDOORS: For anglers, these are the good old days

    Bret Baker|Oct 18, 2019

Since the start of the 2019 fishing season on the St. Louis River in May, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend roughly 75 days on the streams, rivers, reservoirs and lakes in the region. I’ve strived to continue to grow as an angler, constantly pushing myself to break down new water and add different techniques to my arsenal. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about the fish I love to chase and the multitude of ways to catch them. Reflecting on the open water season, I can conclude one thing with...

  • ON HEALTH: Thank you, caregivers

    Ken Ripp MD|Oct 18, 2019

During another busy day in the clinic, as I see an elderly patient in a wheelchair who is accompanied by family member or members, I am reminded at how lucky the patient is. It is estimated that 80 percent of the adults who require some level of care live at home. Unpaid family members provide 90 percent of that care. This means that the majority of the care of the elderly is falling on the shoulders of family members. A caregiver is defined as a family member or friend who is providing unpaid...

  • CEC swims to third with help from the entire team

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 18, 2019

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls swim team finished third in the Section 7A True Team Meet held Saturday in Hibbing. Scoring in a True Team meet is a bit different than regular meets. At a True Team event, scoring is based on the concept that every team member’s finish counts toward the team score. First place is worth as many points as the number of athletes entered in that particular event ,and so on down the line. “We took third overall which is a testament to our young team’s upcoming stren...

  • Love of the links started early for Cloquet golf legend

    Steve Korby|Oct 18, 2019

For decades, the name Butch Newby was synonymous with Cloquet Country Club championship golf. I had the privilege of recently catching up with Butch while being joined in the phone conversation by Bill Manahan, the manager-pro at the club, and Dick Brenner, longtime CCC member and community activist. Butch's given name was Harry Newby, Jr., but he has been known as "Butch" ever since he can remember. He was a very successful attorney in Cloquet and Carlton County, sharing an office for many... Full story
