  • Letter: Vote for Michelle Lee

    Oct 23, 2020

I support Michelle Lee for Senate District 11 and will be casting my vote for her. I encourage everyone to do the same. My fundamental reasoning concerns who she is, and who her opponent is. Michelle Lee is endorsed by the vast majority of unions, over her opponent. In northern Minnesota, union endorsements aren’t handed out without a lot of scrutiny regarding which candidate most strongly supports them. Lee also supports Minnesota Care for all Minnesotans. As a relatively young person who was hospitalized this year for about a week due to C...

  • Letter: Vote to end the spending frenzy

    Oct 23, 2020

I was reading a book one day and came across a quote. It pointed the way the United States is heading with all the government giveaways and its trying to help everyone. “A democracy could only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves gifts from the public treasury.” That could include all the government programs that pass out free housing, food, fuel, health programs, Social Security and Medicare to those who don’t qualify and much more. The quote goes on: “From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candida...

  • Letter: Brenner deserves support in county

    Oct 23, 2020

As Election Day fast approaches, we have a number of very important decisions to make. One is close to home, right here in Carlton County. I submit to the community that Dick Brenner has earned the right to be re-elected as our District 1 Representative on the county board. Dick has done an outstanding job being a steward of the finite tax dollars we collectively entrust to the county. He appreciates the important difference between our community’s wants versus needs and is clearly committed to representing our district. I have found Dick to b...

  • Letter: Flag wavers are there for a reason

    Oct 23, 2020

Every Friday a group of us Trump supporters have been having a sign wave, rain or shine, on Highway 33 in Cloquet. Why? Because we believe in the Second Amendment, the police and law and order, the military and veterans, the flag (we kneel for the cross and stand for the flag), the right to speak our opinions, secure borders, the right to praise God without fear, every unborn boy or girl the right to live and grow up in the greatest country on Earth, the pledge of allegiance with “under God” in it, good and against evil, future of our cou...

  • 'Jacks return to section title game

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 23, 2020

A smothering defense and an opportunistic offense was just what the Cloquet girls soccer team needed on a cold, snowy and blustery Monday night in Proctor. The Lumberjacks used the combination of solid defense and just enough scoring to beat Zimmerman 3-0 in the Section 7A girls soccer semifinals, which was moved up 24 hours because of bad weather anticipated for Tuesday. Cloquet opened the scoring just a little over 10 minutes into the game when Jillian McCullough buried a nifty feed from...

  • Lumberjacks steamroll Hibbing

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 23, 2020

Midway through the first quarter of Friday's football game between Cloquet and Hibbing, it became pretty obvious that the Lumberjacks had superior talent on the field. By the end of the quarter the Lumberjacks were already ahead by three touchdowns. As the clock wound down at the end of the game, the Lumberjacks won 76-20. "We were able to pretty much do whatever we wanted in this game," said Cloquet coach Tom Lenarz. "We controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball throughout. I...

  • CEC Boys Soccer lose in stunning season ender

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 23, 2020

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team was stunned in the second round of the Section 7A boys soccer tournament Thursday night, losing 1-0 to Duluth Denfeld, a team they beat 11-0 a month ago. "Denfeld did not change much in terms of how they played us the first time," said CEC head coach Dave Bergan. "It was just a battle, and hats off to them." Playing at Cloquet High School in temperatures that were beyond frigid, the game was tight throughout and the Lumberjacks had chances, but they...

  • 'Jacks see a strange season end

    Jana Peterson|Oct 23, 2020

The Section 7AA cross country meet in Princeton last Thursday was a unique experience for the many veteran varsity runners on the Cloquet High School boys and girls cross country teams this year. Instead of lining up with runners from 15 other schools for a mass start to one of the biggest races of the year, they raced against three other teams, with multiple races taking place throughout the day. Each team crowded into a white box painted on the grass, to maintain proper social distancing from...

  • Sports cards have dual values

    Greg Oakes|Oct 23, 2020

My favorite baseball idol died recently. Joe Morgan was a Hall of Fame second baseman for my hometown Cincinnati Reds. During the 1970s, Morgan won Most Valuable Player awards in 1975 and 1976. The Reds won the World Series in those same years. He was the igniter of arguably the best baseball team ever assembled, the Big Red Machine. The news of his passing brought back memories of my adolescent years when I collected sports cards for a hobby. There was a thrill of going to a gas station to buy...

Sympathy goes to the family of Brian A. Holte, 40, of Anoka, who passed away Oct. 14 at his home. The preliminary autopsy showed that Brian had an enlarged heart. Send condolences to his mother, Judy Olson, at 1827 South Ferry St. Apt 214, Anoka MN 55303. Mary J. Purcell, 92, formerly of Wright, died Oct. 9 in Minnetonka. • Early snow mutes fall color

    Pine Knot News|Oct 23, 2020

A snowy week in mid-October falls low on a list of strange things to happen in 2020. Nonetheless, there it was last weekend and in two spurts this week, snow squalls leaving a world of white two weeks before Halloween. Right: Reader Mark Cline found things "monochromal" Wednesday morning near a St. Louis River backwater between Scanlon and Carlton. Below and bottom: Trees collected snow at the Cloquet Forestry Center, where Pine Knot News editor Jana Peterson took a walk on Tuesday afternoon....
