  • Raptors race through first round of playoffs

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 25, 2019

After going undefeated during the regular season the Carlton-Wrenshall Raptors football team had to hit the road and play as the No. 5 seed in the Section 7A football tournament against the No. 4 seeded North Woods Grizzlies. The reason? The Raptors played a nine-man schedule and had to bump up to 11-man after combining their two programs earlier this year. In the end, the Raptors came away with a solid 33-18 win on the road. “We felt as a team that we have not received the respect that we d...

  • Cardinals triumph over numbers but fall in playoffs

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 25, 2019

Playing with a roster of just 12 players all season, somehow Cromwell-Wright not only finished the season, but gave Hill City/Northland a scare in a 30-20 road loss on Tuesday in the opening round of the Section 5 nine-man football tournament. The Cardinals trailed 22-20 at halftime. Despite trailing, they appeared to be the team controlling the line of scrimmage. “At halftime I felt like we controlled the first half but were down two because we gave up big plays,” said Cards coach Jeff Gro...

  • Barnum falls in battle of the Bombers

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 25, 2019

The Braham Bombers jumped out early and never were threatened in their 48-8 win over the Barnum Bombers in a Section 7A football game in Braham Tuesday night. “Braham has good size across their offensive front and our guys had a hard time controlling the line of scrimmage,” said Barnum coach Mike Klyve. “Their run game up the middle was strong, and when we adjusted they used their speed and got out to the edge effectively with the outside run game and screen game.” A big thorn in Barnum'...

It was a tough weekend for the Minnesota Wilderness hockey team, which dropped both games of its weekend matchup with the Aberdeen Wings. • Darts league is back

    Steve Korby|Oct 25, 2019

Fall is in the air, and retiree darts are zooming at targets at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Friday morning dart league has resumed play from now through April. The Major League Baseball playoffs are nearly, but not quite, as stressful as the three games played each week by these seniors. The games - with randomly picked teams each week - begin every Friday at 9 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church's Fellowship Hall on the corner of 12th Street and Doddridge Avenue. "We have guys...

  • A suckers' trip yields results

    Bret Baker|Oct 25, 2019

The four-day MEA weekend is a Minnesota tradition. A holiday without the stress and busy schedule of an actual holiday. By the time everyone rolled out of bed Thursday morning, I was heavily gauging interest in a day trip. Two of my boys took the bait. Joseph, David and I loaded up and headed west. By mid-morning, we pulled into the market at Malmo on the northeast side of Mille Lacs. I topped off the gas tank in the Big Blue Lund as Joseph and David ran inside to gather armfuls of sugar- and...

  • Wrenshall news: Students find magic in a traveling opera

    Anne Dugan|Oct 25, 2019

Jules Massenet’s “Cendrillon” or, as we now know it, “Cinderella,” first debuted at the National Theater of the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1899. On Monday, it was performed in the Wrenshall School commons for a raucous crowd of grade-schoolers by Little Opera of the North, presented by Lyric Opera of the North’s Little Loon program. “This was totally different from the movie,” exclaimed one awestruck student after the performance. “There was real magic … and the prince actually sang in thi...

  • The Green Guy: Leaves are pretty in the fall, pretty dangerous for water

    Chris Gass|Oct 25, 2019

The recent wind and rain have taken a toll on the leaves. In turn, the crinkly debris is strewn all over, leading to the debate on collecting or ignoring them. Whatever side of the fence you sit on regarding handling the leaves, one place they most assuredly shouldn’t be is the street. Why? Because the end destination, come the next rain, is a nearby storm drain leading to a nearby water feature. “What’s the big deal?” you might ask. Let me explain. When fall approaches, trees begin taking...

    Pine Knot News|Oct 25, 2019

In 2017, the Cloquet Public Library received a Rural Gateways grant for STEM programming in Cloquet and surrounding areas. The $3,500 National Science Foundation grant from the Califa Library Group will provide science-based programs for adults. While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) are popular topics for children’s education, they are rarely mentioned in adult programming. The programs funded by the grant are essentially “book club meets science café.” Partic...
