The Cloquet voters couldn't have spoken more clearly had they marched down Hwy 33 with giant banners. They wanted change. Challenger and current Ward 3 Councilor Roger Maki swept Mayor Dave Hallback out of office, with 3,331 votes to Hallback's 1,796 (or approximately 65 percent to 35 percent). In Ward 1, challenger Warren "Bun" Carlson defeated incumbent Jeff Rock 631 votes (61 percent) to 399 (39 percent). In Ward 2 the race was closer, but longtime Councilor David Bjerkness still lost his sea...
Tuesday's General Election also brought change outside of Cloquet. Challenger Lauri Ketola won the County Attorney's race in a landslide - 11,488 votes to 3,347 votes - over incumbent Thom Pertler. Ketola has less time at the County Attorney's office than Pertler, but also offered a background in nonprofit leadership. She was also endorsed by a number of area law enforcement officials, including Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake, Moose Lake Police Chief Bryce Bogenholm and former Cloquet Police...
With a little more than a week to go until showtime, all the pieces of the Cloquet High School production of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" are coming together - literally and figuratively. The stairs and balconies that climb up both sides of the stage are complete, and perfectly frame a massive, hand-painted, Plexiglas stained glass window that glows high above the set. Modeled after the actual stained glass windows at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the almost-completed circular window may b...
Jake Kachinske [email protected] ESKO-On the final play of the first quarter in the Section 5 nine-man football game last Friday, Cromwell-Wright senior quarterback Drew Libbon was knocked out of bounds on a scramble towards his own sideline. After a lengthy delay, he was back-boarded off the field by medical personnel and later diagnosed with a dislocated hip and did not return. That could have been disastrous for the Cardinals. Leading only 6-0 at that point, the Cardinals defense took...
Cloquet High School student Raven Sevilleja was one of 20 students from across the country invited to a three-day seminar in the Washington, D.C. area last month. The listening session was designed to give federal government agencies a sense of how teens and young adults make decisions. Anne Parish, a coordinator with the local mentoring program REACH, nominated Sevilleja. "She's extremely bright," Parish said. "She's an abstract thinker. Raven thinks bigger and broader." Sevilleja was bemused...
HIBBING-The Carlton Bulldogs are making another trip to state volleyball tournament this week after a convincing 3-0 win over the Deer River Warriors in last Saturday's Section 7A championship match. The final lasted less than an hour at Lincoln Elementary Gymnasium, with Carlton winning games one and two 25-15 and 25-19, and the final game 25-9. "I didn't see them nervous at all out there today. Even when they got behind early in that second game, I didn't see them get rattled. This group just...
The Cloquet Lumberjacks were seeking a third consecutive trip to the state football tournament Friday night at Public Schools Stadium in West Duluth, and the 'Jacks were confident coming off a 14-0 shutout win over Hermantown 16 days earlier. But, as the mantra goes, anything can happen in playoffs. Although the Lumberjacks came into the game with four consecutive victories over the Hawks, a determined Hermantown squad ended those hopes as the Hawks bested Cloquet 20-14 to return to the state...
The Cloquet boys cross-country team approached Saturday's 2018 Class AA State Tournament with high hopes, as it was their third trip in as many years to the annual meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. The boys team was hoping to improve on its 16th place finish a year ago and all individuals runners - including Lauren Cawcutt for the girls team - were seeking to post their best times of the year. The smallest school in the AA division by far, the state meet is a tough race for the...
The closest I ever came to a divorce was the afternoon I first made venison brats. Admittedly, it was a rush job. I harvested my deer in the early morning, dragged him to a nearby trail, waited for the hour that made it legal to run my wheeler, and hauled him out of the woods. I drove him home, hung him, skun him, quartered him in quick fashion. From there the real work began. Everything about processing a deer is a ritual: a personal one, one that comes back to you the moment you sharpen your k...
If anyone has a Big Buck photo from this year you'd like to share, please email to [email protected], drop off at 122 Avenue C in Cloquet or text to 218-213-1231 with your name, the general location where you shot your buck, how many points, weight if you know it and any other details you want to share. Then look for it in the Pine Knot News....
Carlton County Board of Commissioners aim to make a decision in early December on funding the Carlton County Historical Society for budget year 2019 and where to house the Society's future activities. An architectural firm has offered $50,000 for the building and is willing to commit to a major upgrade to the building, resolving major structural issues. Major water damage occurred in the 2012 Flood and neither the county -- which owns the building -- or CCHS has the money to invest in the...
Finally, elections are over and we can all come together — as a nation, as a community, as neighbors — and settle our political differences over the one issue we are all grateful for: We no longer have to listen to negative political ads. These ads are always misleading, inaccurate and inflammatory. They are often inconsistent, hypocritical, and mean. And they work, so say the experts. But negative ads don’t work. Exposing a flaw in your opponent’s platform is one thing — pretending to care about errant emails or traffic tickets is another....
Petite’s voice needed on RBC The voters in Fond du Lac Reservation Cloquet District 1 will be casting their ballots on Dec. 4. Electing Patty Petite, who has a doctorate in education, will strengthen our RBC with a member who understands that making cultural policy affects our communities both on and off the reservation. Her voice has been ongoing, standing strong for all us band members to be heard and their issues addressed. Her stance on being fiscally responsible has been demonstrated through her many roles on boards and director of p...
There’s an old joke about a tourist asking for directions in Times Square: “How do I get to Broadway?” she asked a native. “Luck,” replied the out-of-work actor. “Hard work,” chimed in his working buddy. This fall, my wife and I took our daughter Eleanor to New York City for a long weekend. Small-town boy that I am, I was a little scared of the Big Apple, but excited too. My cousin offered her apartment in Manhattan, in the same neighborhood where Seinfeld “lived” and just blocks away from...
Over the past week the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources finally issued all of the permits necessary for the construction and operation of the PolyMet copper, nickel, and platinum group mining operation in Hoyt Lakes. Minnesota now positions itself as a future leading supplier for the domestic and global need for metals we use to build our businesses, our homes, our cars, and our most beloved electronic devices. At current market prices, the value of these metals tops $100,000,000,000....
It's Halloween. I'm on my third flight to Zurich, Switzerland. What an expanse of beautiful land and water we've soared over! The fall blaze of orange, red, and chestnut leaves encircling the Duluth airport. That cantankerous Lake Superior, whose winds and moods you can guess from wave patterns below. Still reddish from the Nemadji River Basin muds brought down in weeks of rain. We flew to Minneapolis and then east through the night, crossing six time zones. Now we're headed east again from Amst...
It was a fortuitous bus ride discussion nearly two years ago that led to a student-run peer group in Cloquet designed to keep kids safe from the stressful triggers of adolescence. "We want to do more" is what Anne Parish remembers students saying on the ride home from a suicide prevention training in Grand Rapids. She is a coordinator for REACH, the countywide mentoring program for teens begun in 2000. "Things have progressed," said Raven Sevilleja, a student at Cloquet High School and one of th...

After eight years of talk and planning, the new Cloquet skate park opened for business at the end of September at the corner of 14th Street and Prospect Avenue in Cloquet. The city hasn't had to advertise its $420,000 park - there are kids and young adults with skateboards, scooters and bikes there anytime school is out and there's still daylight. The 6,000-square-foot park has it all: quarter pipes, handrails, banked ramps, a bowl, stairs and a ledge. There is no charge to skate there,...
What a big weekend: The Red Bird craft sale was a big success, and I’m sure there were some successful hunters too. So many folks attend this craft sale, and there sure are a lot of talented crafters in our area. For those who were hunting, this annual event is so enjoyed by those that hunt and go out to their deer shacks for a few days or the whole season. I have never been a hunter, but do hunt with my camera from time to time. Are you missing your morning coffee at the cafe in Cromwell? Well,...

One hundred years ago, while folks in northern Minnesota were just beginning to recover from the Oct. 12 fires and the Spanish influenza after both swept through the area, news of a war-ending armistice reached Minneapolis just before 2 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. As described by author Curt Brown in his “Minnesota 1918” book, sirens went off, “lights blinked on in homes, and people poured into the streets.” Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the armistice with Germany...
The Carlton County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved buying the present Cloquet City Hall for $750,000, paid over six years with no interest, at their meeting Monday, Oct. 9. “Opportunities to find space at a reasonable price has been our goal,” explained County Coordinator Dennis Genereau. “This building is adjacent to the Health and Human Services complex and its parking area. We first hoped to sign an agreement at the $600,000 figure but several private parties were interested in the building. Fond Du Lac Band was eager to buy b...
