  • STATE FOOTBALL: Paynesville roars past Rebels

    Dwight Cadwell|Nov 15, 2019

Paynesville entered Friday's matchup with Moose Lake/Willow River averaging 38 points per game while allowing only 11 points per game. With that said, it was the Bulldogs who used Rebel mistakes and miscues to their advantage as Paynesville defeated ML/WR 56-8 in the state Class AA quarterfinals in North Branch. Seven Rebel turnovers led to short fields and even shorter drives as the Bulldogs built a 12-0 lead after one quarter of play. Three more second-quarter touchdowns, and the Bulldogs led...

After finishing eighth in his first race, the Cloquet High School senior cruised to three straight victories and two titles. Wehr finished his season at the state meet in Mankato winning his race, and was crowned Minnesota High School Cycling League Division 2 JV2...

  • LOOK AT THAT! Behold the power of the St. Louis River

    Glen Sorenson|Nov 15, 2019

Spending time in Carlton, Cloquet, Thomson and Jay Cooke State Park is sure to reveal a few sites of interest for sure. I like to paddle the St. Louis River from Scanlon to the Thomson Reservoir on warmer days than today. During the journey we get to run, or portage, a famous drop called "electric ledge." When approaching this drop, you can't miss how it got its name: not from the electricity flowing through my body, but the high power lines that span the river. This beautiful St. Louis River...

  • SWCD NEWS: Farmers, SWCD work to improve waters

    Nov 15, 2019

When it comes to soil health and water quality, farmers have always been some of the most conscientious and concerned people. This is due to their deep, hands-on connections with soil and water and nature. Farmers physically feel their soil and can tell if it is too wet or too dry for tilling, planting, harvesting. They test their soil to make sure it has the necessary minerals in order to produce good quality crops to sell and eat. They regularly check their water to ensure its safety for the...

    Nov 15, 2019

Cloquet photographer Mark Cline captured this huge wall of sea smoke over Lake Superior, looking as if it will soon overtake a ship and downtown Duluth Tuesday morning. Cline said he captured the image from Skyline Drive near Enger Park. Check out more photographs by Cline and fellow photographer Vern Northrup on exhibit at the Pine Knot News office at 122 Avenue C, Cloquet. • WRENSHALL NEWS: Raptors Zywicki named coach of the year

    Anne Dugan|Nov 15, 2019

Wrenshall coach Jeremy Zywicki was recently named coach of the year for the 9 Man North White district of the Minnesota State High School Football League for his work this year with the new Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors. This honor prompted me to check in with Coach Zywicki and co-coach Jason Crane. The two led the team to an 8-0 record in the regular season. According to Zywicki, the accomplishment is due in large part to the positive, hard-working students who made the dream of this season a...

  • 'The Little Mermaid' washes ashore at Cloquet High School this weekend

    Jana Peterson|Nov 15, 2019

After 10 years of directing, Kevin Hamre had stepped away from the massive productions that are the fall musicals at Cloquet High School. Shows that often feature between 70 and 100 young actors and singers, wearing amazing costumes and performing on sets that often takes months to craft in exactly the right way ... he'd left it all in the capable hands of former student, protegee and dear friend Landon Hall. And then the 23-year-old director died, totally unexpectedly, of arrhythmia on June 8...
