  • Cloquet hangs tough with East

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 20, 2020

The Cloquet football team couldn't quite overcome a rough start last Wednesday night as they fell on the road to Duluth East 27-22. "They are pretty big up front and we were caught out of position a number of times in the first half. In some cases it was a scheme thing, where they caught us in a bad defense for what they were doing," said Cloquet coach Tom Lenarz. "The combination of all those things produced some big numbers for them in the first half. We were able to tighten things up a...

  • Esko drops playoff opener

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 20, 2020

Usually when a high school football team heads into the playoffs there is renewed hope of the possibility of winning a section championship. Regardless of a team's record, there is always a chance to pull off an upset or two and perhaps make a magical run. For Esko that chance was diminished greatly after they realized that much of their team would be quarantined by Covid-19 precautions as they entered the first round of the playoffs against Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin Tuesday afternoon. "We...

Carlton-Wrenshall was scheduled to play at Hinckley-Finlayson on Tuesday night, but the Raptors had to forfeit due to Covid exposure of their team. South Ridge was scheduled to open the playoffs against McGregor on Friday night, but that game was also a forfeit as the Mercs are unable to field a team. That means the Panthers will move on to the second round of the Section 5...

"We have many offensive threats and we were able to spread the ball out," said Esko coach Desi DeLeon after the game. "We have a lot of experience and leadership, and that helps." The Eskomos were led by 18 kills and 12 digs from Tayia Gregg along with seven kills and 10 digs from Jayden Karppinen....

  • Bombers sweep diminished Rebels team

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 20, 2020

In a neighborhood volleyball match up on Thursday, Nov. 12, host Barnum improved its record to 9-1 on the season with a 25-9, 25-8, 25-8 win over Moose Lake/Willow River, which had to scramble players after a Covid-19 exposure. "We played well together and used everyone on the court," said Barnum coach Corina Newman. "We served well with only three service errors all night." While the Bombers were excited about picking up a win against their perennial tough neighbors, the Rebels were trying to u...

  • Bombers bomb Bombers

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 20, 2020

The Barnum football team rallied hard in the second half of Tuesday night's playoff game vs. Braham, but a 24-8 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Bombers were beaten 24-16 and bounced from the Section 7A football playoffs. Braham - also nicknamed the Bombers - scored on its first possession of the game on a 27-yard pass play and took an 8-0 lead, but Barnum answered on their very next drive when Reed Kornovich scored on a 25-yard touchdown gallop, tying the game at 8-8...

  • The where and how of local testing

    Pine Knot News|Nov 20, 2020

There are two types of diagnostic tests in use across Minnesota: PCR tests and antigen tests. PCR — which stands for polymerase chain reaction — tests are the nose-swab tests or the saliva tests and they are very accurate. They require specialized lab equipment to process the samples, so it takes some time — often days — to get results. Antigen tests, or “rapid tests,” use either a nasal or throat swab to collect samples. They can deliver results pretty quickly, some as quickly as 15 minutes....

  • City offices closed again

    Pine Knot News|Nov 20, 2020

As a result of the spike in Covid-19 cases in this area, public access to Cloquet City Hall and other city facilities was suspended starting Wednesday, Nov. 18. The city will still offer all core services, including police, public works, building and zoning permits, inspections and applications and more. City administrator Tim Peterson said the closure will inconvenience some residents, but city officials believe the decision is in the best interest of the community as a whole. The city has also struggled with staff missing work due to either...

"It really is a way for people to get outside while social distancing yet still feel connected as a community." Pandemic restrictions have a definite impact on physical activity. • Catch a cache of quilts

    Jana Peterson|Nov 20, 2020

Jane Willie and sewing have been acquainted for decades, but her show at Magnolia Café in Carlton is her first foray into exhibiting her fabric creations (aside from various fairs, that is). Growing up, Willie said she made her own clothes in high school, then she made some of her children's clothes when they were little. Although she made her first quilt in the 1970s, it took another 20 years, a community education class in Carlton, and the encouragement of two dear friends (Candy and Yvonne)...
