The 2019 girls swimming season came to an end recently and the Lumberjacks predict a bright future. With several swimmers making the state girls swim meet in recent years and state champion Makayla Suominen off to college in Alaska, it was a rebuilding season for Cloquet-Esko-Carlton. "In 2018 we had 12 girls qualify in the top 16 for our section meet, eight of whom qualified in individual events," head coach Rachel Peterson said. "In 2019 we had 13 girls qualify in the top 16 for sections with...

  • Band member had a shot in Major League Baseball ... in 1910

    Steve Korby|Nov 22, 2019

More than 100 years ago, a member of the Fond du Lac band pitched six innings for the Chicago White Sox … the same year he was deemed “unqualified” to play for the Cloquet baseball team. His name was William Cadreau. The right-handed pitcher is listed in the 1889 Census Roll of the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa, a 1-year old boy born to Antoine Cadreau and Louisa Naganab on Sept. 2, 1888, in Cloquet. William’s lineage appears to show he is the grandson of Chief Naganab of Fond du Lac, who sig...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 22, 2019

While the Carlton and Wrenshall school boards continue slow-moving consolidation talks, some students in the neighboring school districts say they want to be one school district already. “The kids said they won’t play the Jug game,” Community Ed director Julie Jacobson told the Wrenshall board Monday. “They’re done competing against each other.” Senior Randy Wimmer said that’s been a discussion point among his teammates. A football player on the inaugural Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors football team this fall, Wimmer is transitioning to basketball...

    Jana Peterson|Nov 22, 2019

Only one of three candidates for the Cloquet City Administrator job - Tim Peterson - made it to a second interview, held prior to the City Council work session Tuesday. Peterson, the current city administrator in Moose Lake and previously deputy clerk in Proctor, displayed a good understanding of both the issues and strengths of Cloquet, in a question and answer session with councilors that went both ways. Peterson asked councilors what they see as priority projects for the city. Answers ranged...

According to the c...

  • Beware thin ice until cold weather

    Pine Knot News|Nov 22, 2019

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is warning residents that ice is still in the early stages of forming on waterways across Minnesota. It’s not safe to be out on it; you run the very real risk of falling through or being caught on a sheet that separates from shore. Ice thickness is highly variable and subject to the whims of Mother Nature. Emergency responders already have responded to incidents where anglers have fallen through thin ice or been stranded on ice sheets that broke off from the shoreline due to heavy wind. It will t...

  • Our View: Support your local businesses - or else

    Pine Knot News|Nov 22, 2019

As a locally owned newspaper hyper-focused on local news, with local owners and support from local neighbors, no one understands the concept of supporting a local business more than we do at the Pine Knot News. Our owners subscribe to the local papers including the Proctor Journal, the Moose Lake Star Gazette, the Hermantown Star and the Duluth News Tribune. Heck, we even get the competing Pine Journal, even though most of their stories are recycled Duluth stories with just a small amount of unique local news. That’s because we are true l...

  • Harry's gang: Navigating politics can be like marriage counseling

    Pete Radosevich|Nov 22, 2019

As a divorce attorney, I find myself asking my clients a lot of questions that really don’t have anything to do with the legalities of their case. I like to know why the parties got married in the first place. I ask if the client has a new “friend” or if the parties are still living together. I even ask how the couple met, sometimes, because it helps put the client’s relationship in perspective. When things get tense, I often remind my clients that they married their spouse for a reason....

  • Letters: Remembering fun at the old YMCA

    Pine Knot News|Nov 22, 2019

Great article on the “Y”’ in the Nov. 8 issue but one important ingredient was left out. Every Friday night, come rain, snow or bitter cold, we had what was called Dri-Nite Friday. The whole gym became a dance floor with Terry and His Pirates (a high school dance band) playing beautiful music from 8 to 12. Without fail, 200 or so would always show up. It was a tradition we all enjoyed. Of course Dri-nite meant no drinking allowed and when the band played "I’ll See You In My Dreams” everyone...

  • On The Mark: Church auction is a real hoot

    Ann Markusen|Nov 22, 2019

It's a good season for church bazaars. You can find one-of-a-kind handmade items and artworks, edible lovelies and lightly used items. I'm used to silent auctions. But I've never lived in a community where a congregation hosts its auction live. Every November, the women of Cromwell's Bethany Lutheran Church hustle to solicit contributions, sort and arrange them for best viewing, and price items not for auctioneering. Two Bethany members, brothers Billy and Rob Switzer, were emcees at last...

  • At The Library: Libraries put 'Little House' series in new light

    Keiko Satomi|Nov 22, 2019

I grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie" series in Japan. For me, a young girl growing up in a small country surrounded by oceans, the series was a window into a pioneer family's life on a vast continent I had never seen before. I was particularly fond of all the sensory details (from blowing up the hog's bladder like a little balloon to making molasses candies on the snow) as well as the feistiness of Laura's character, a quality we shared. The "Little House"...

  • 'Mermaid' is a smash hit

    Pine Knot News|Nov 22, 2019

The Cloquet High School production of "The Little Mermaid" last weekend was both spectacular and record-breaking. The first fall musical in the newly renovated CHS auditorium sold out all four shows for the first time in theater department history. According to director Kevin Hamre, the auditorium holds 520 seats and they added 24 more folding chairs to accommodate the overflow. "We sold out to the max and more each night," Hamre said. "People didn't care where they sat. They just wanted to be...

  • Win over Moose Lake doesn't come easy

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 22, 2019

Moose Lake Area senior goalie Jo Wekseth made 50 saves, but in the end that was not enough to hold off the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks who came away with a 2-1 win over the Rebels in Cloquet. Wekseth and her teammates managed to keep the game scoreless through one period despite being outshot 16-5 in the opening period. "Moose Lake Area is a very hardworking gritty team, and that showed in the game," said CEC coach Courtney Olin. "I thought they did a great job in their defensive end...

    Howie Hanson|Nov 22, 2019

Second-year Cloquet-Esko- Carlton boys' hockey coach Shea Walters says he's been impressed by his players' commitment to improving their craft this off-season. "The kids stayed very active in hockey all summer and fall, including some players who competed in the Elite League," said Walters, who guided CEC to a 14-12-1 record last season and a Section 7AA semifinal appearance. Last season, CEC was built for a strong run in the playoff, led by a handful of high-end players including three-year...
