    Marcia Sarvela|Nov 25, 2022

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving Day and weekend. Our sympathies go out to the family of Ken Johnson, who died on Nov. 10, and to the family of Jerome Tomczak, who died on Nov. 12. Check out what is happening at the Kettle River Veterans Building on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Hopefully, Santa will make an appearance at about 5 p.m. The tree lighting is at 6 p.m. There will be juice and cookies available. So come and visit with neighbors and enjoy an evening with family and friends. Winter snow parking rules began...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie Hanson|Nov 25, 2022

Well, another week is over and gone, and now November is almost gone too. It sure is weird when the sun goes down so early. It’s hard for me to stay awake after 7 p.m., but as we get used to Standard Time, I’m sure it will seem normal after a while. I got so many nice comments on Bob’s eulogy over these past few weeks. He was a kind and gentle man and we do miss him, but I can feel his presence in so many ways. Christmas came early at the Villa Vista and Cardinal Court last week as they celebrated family night on Nov. 16. This is an annual Chri...

  • Artists work in the shadows

    Jana Peterson|Nov 25, 2022

When Thomlin Swan moved to a home on the Fond du Lac Reservation in early 2021, the theater artist was astounded by the lack of visible Ojibwe culture within the city of Cloquet, "despite having a reservation as part of its borders." Swan wanted to change that. In 2021, they received a West End Flourish grant to produce a piece of youth puppet theater that would help bring Ojibwe stories to downtown. After a slow start, things started coming together last summer when Swan connected with two...

  • Students deliver for dinner (rolls)

    Brady Slater|Nov 25, 2022

It wasn't a normal day for students in Lynsee Wanous' classes on Tuesday. The Cloquet Middle School teacher was engaging her seventh- and eighth-grade Family Consumer Science classes in a group project. They were baking more than 700 rolls for delivery to the annual DAV Thanksgiving dinner. "Oh, I dropped one," said Trinity Klinger, as a plump roll tumbled to the floor. That one was headed into the discard pile, per teacher's orders at the start of class. "We have a few extras, so that's OK,"...

  • Don't hang up on local survey

    Nov 25, 2022

Dakota Koski has a simple request for local residents: Don’t hang up. If the phone rings between Nov. 28 and Dec. 16 and it’s someone asking survey questions about underage substance abuse, it’s a legitimate survey company. The goal of the questions is to learn more about how adults in our community feel about underage substance abuse in the area. Survey calls are random and participation is voluntary. As REACH director, Koski is one of many involved in a five-year grant aiming to tackle substance abuse, in part by uncovering “the positiv...

  • Talk with kids about ice safety

    Nov 25, 2022

A pre-Thanksgiving cold snap means some lakes and ponds across Minnesota are beginning to freeze. However, the ice isn’t yet safe to walk on and the water underneath is dangerously cold. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminded everyone this week to “be extremely cautious around the water,” and with children home for Thanksgiving break, to talk with them about the risks of cold water and ice. While ice is never 100% safe, ice in the early stages of formation is particularly dangerous. Falls through the ice or into open water...

  • MNsure program helps with insulin needs

    Nov 25, 2022

A recent study found that more than 1.3 million Americans with diabetes rationed their insulin because of cost concerns by skipping doses, taking less insulin than needed, or delaying buying insulin to save money. During November’s National Diabetes Month, MNsure and the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy have reminded Minnesotans that the Minnesota Insulin Safety Net Program provides fast, reliable help for those who need insulin and may be struggling to afford the life-saving drug. The Minnesota Insulin Safety Net Program has two key components, d...

Cloquet Santa’s Home for the Holidays celebration — and St. Nick himself — will be here before you know it. Cloquet’s three-day holiday celebration kicks off Thursday evening, Dec. 1 with a chili feed, West End open house and Reading with Santa at the Cloquet Public Library. On Friday, Dec. 2, there’s spaghetti and photos with Santa at Queen of Peace. And Saturday, Dec. 3, there’s fun all day long, from the pancake feed and holiday craft fair/expo at Churchill Elementary to magic and cookies at Wood City Motors, ending with the grand final...
