Another Minnesota firearms deer season has come and gone, and while some hunters enjoyed a bountiful harvest, others, like me, left 2019 in the rearview without adding any venison to their freezers. The fact that I was unable to harvest a deer this year did not diminish the overall experience and just solidified the reasons those of us who like to deer hunt do what we do. At least four or five times this past week I was asked by non-hunters why I hunt. What is it that makes it appealing to go...

Following the resignation of long-time head softball coach Ron Tondryk and assistant coach Kerry Rodd, a familiar face will lead the Lumberjacks in the spring. Cloquet School Board members voted earlier this month to hire Andrew Miller, who had been serving as junior varsity coach for the past two years, as head softball coach for the Cloquet girls softball program. Miller is also an assistant boys basketball coach. Activities director Paul Riess recommended the board hire Miller, who submitted several recommendation letters, including one...

To that end, the agency is creating a new wolf plan advisory committee to help inform the update to the management plan. Applications are now open for the committee, which is one of several ways the DNR will engage with the public on the plan. “It’s critical to have all voices about wolves at the table,” said Dan Stark, the DNR’s wolf management specialis...

Most people want to leave a legacy, to know that their lives mattered, to leave their mark on the world, a contribution of some sort to future generations. But many don’t consciously think about what they want their legacy to be or how to build it. They also don’t realize that they aren’t alone, that they can involve others in creating their legacy. Warren Tester has done that. Tester is being honored as Carlton County’s 2019 Outstanding Conservationist for his work on what he calls his “strategic” property in the Nemadji watershed....
Believe it or not, fall is the best time of year to tackle buckthorn. The pesky and intrusive invasive is most vulnerable when cooler weather rolls in for a couple reasons. One, it is one of the easiest times to identify the small tree because its leaves persist into winter. Two, like the rest of the plants, it’s pulling nutrients down into the roots for winter storage. That makes it susceptible to chemical treatment that has high chance ending any further growth. Here’s how easy buckthorn rem...
As the first snow of the season arrives, Minnesotans start thinking about clearing snow and ice from pavement — sometimes with salt. But when the snow melts or it rains, the salt, which contains chloride, runs into storm drains and into nearby lakes, rivers, and groundwater. It takes only a teaspoon of salt to permanently pollute five gallons of water. There’s no feasible way to remove chloride once it gets into the water, and we are finding increasing amounts of chloride in waters around the state. Salty water harms freshwater fish and other a...
Minnesota Public Radio Minnesota regulators said Friday they plan to conduct their own independent environmental review of the proposed Twin Metals Minnesota copper-nickel mine, rather than collaborating on a joint review with federal regulators. Twin Metals has yet to file its mine plan of operations — which will detail the specifics of the operation, from its physical footprint to how it will handle waste material. That will kick-start the environmental review process. The project has already come under fire for its close proximity to the pri...
