  • Lumberjacks outpace Rebels, 2-1

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 3, 2021

After the first three games of the girls hockey season, the Moose Lake Area team was 3-0 and Cloquet-Esko-Carlton was 1-2. On Nov. 23, the two teams met, with the Lumberjacks coming out on top 2-1 in a well-played game at Cloquet's Northwoods Credit Union Arena. Numbers don't always tell the whole story. CEC had the tough task of opening the season against two of the state's top-ranked Class A teams in Orono and South St. Paul. The Rebels are an up-and-coming squad that is serving notice that...

  • After two decades in top job, Cloquet coach steps down

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 3, 2021

After 19 seasons, Tom Lenarz has resigned as head coach of the Cloquet Lumberjacks football team. Lenarz notified activities director Paul Riess on Monday, and prior to that had sent out a letter to players, who received them just after Thanksgiving. "I've been talking to my wife, Collette, about this for a while now," Lenarz said on Monday. "I wanted to be sure. I talked to a lot of people I trust, including my old high school football coach at Blaine." Lenarz played linebacker for Blaine and...

  • Lumberjacks get over Esko

    Dwight Cadwell|Dec 3, 2021

Prior to the Lumberjacks first game of the season Tuesday, head coach Heather Young said "the first game of the season we normally feel rushed and ready to go, but tonight I think we are set." This was a prophetic statement. Cloquet came out in mid-season form to beat the Eskomos for the first time in eight years with a 68-54 victory in Esko. The Lumberjacks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Dominant play from Maddie Young and Alexa Snesrud proved to be the big difference in...

  • Lumberjacks rebound after rough start

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 3, 2021

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team wasted little time jumping into their early season schedule, playing three games within the past five days. CEC went 1-2 during that stretch after suffering road losses to Andover and Minnetonka before winning at home against Hibbing Tuesday night. The Lumberjacks opened the day after Thanksgiving against an impressive Andover Huskies team, which is ranked No. 5 in the Minnesota State Class AA rankings, and fell by a score of 4-0 despite an impressive sh...

  • Steel flurry makes for miserable Wilderness weekend

    Pine Knot News|Dec 3, 2021

The Chippewa Steel had goals from six players and were backed by stellar goaltending Saturday night, as they handed the Minnesota Wilderness their third straight defeat, 6-1, at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet. Croix Kochendorfer stopped 39 of 40 Wilderness shots, including all 17 shots he faced in the first period, to secure his seventh win of the season. Ethan Janda opened the scoring for Chippewa early in the first when he was able to jam in a rebound past Jacob Zacharewicz at the 3:06 mark. The Steel made it 2-0 early in the...

  • Korby's Connections: We lost a golfing great

    Steve Korby|Dec 3, 2021

I was saddened to hear that my high school driver education teacher, Gerald “Jiggs” La Breche, recently passed away. Jiggs was a legend at the Cloquet and Big Lake golf clubs. He was a longtime Cromwell social studies teacher and a fixture of the West Carlton Avenue neighborhood in Cloquet. I wrote about Jiggs for the Cloquet Country Club membership newsletter in April 2018. The following are some excerpts from that piece. Jiggs was born in 1932. He grew up on West Carlton Avenue and spent mos...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Dec 3, 2021

Last week I won a Jennie-O turkey at the Village Pump Saloon in Tamarack. The turkeys needed to be picked up at the Farmers Co-op in Wright, so when I left the co-op board meeting, I grabbed the turkey and threw it on the front seat of my little Chevy Spark and headed home. It didn’t take long before the passenger side seat belt alarm went off, and it wouldn’t stop. Well, I wasn’t going to stop to belt in the turkey, so just had to deal with the beep, beep, beep until I got home, which was o...

  • Robert Bly, county's poet neighbor, dies at 94

    Euan Kerr|Dec 3, 2021

Minnesota poet, teacher and men's movement founder Robert Bly was a major figure in American literature for decades who drew adulation and controversy. Bly died Nov. 21. He was 94. Born in 1926, he grew up on a farm in southwest Minnesota near Madison. He had a cabin in Carlton County, on Moosehead Lake in Moose Lake. Bly studied writing at Harvard University with poet and playwright Archibald MacLeish. His classmates included Adrienne Rich, John Ashbery, George Plimpton and his lifelong friend...

  • County Corner: Bly was a welcome and welcoming presence here

    Lois Johnson|Dec 3, 2021

The passing of Robert Bly, a well-known poet and author of "Iron John," brought back many memories for me as a longtime reporter and resident of the Moose Lake area. Bly lived in the Twin Cities area with his wife, Ruth, but the couple had a second home in Moose Lake on the shore of Moosehead Lake. His first wife, Carol Bly, also lived in the Moose Lake area for a number of years. They shared children and co-parented them until they were grown. I remember when Bly once brought a request to the...

  • CAFD Chief job is in limbo

    Pine Knot News|Dec 3, 2021

After less than a year on the job, Cloquet Area Fire District chief Matt Ashmore has been placed on paid administrative leave by the CAFD board and is fighting to keep his job. Ashmore defended himself in a Loudermill hearing on Nov. 21 against allegations regarding his performance as fire chief that could result in discipline, up to dismissal. Loudermill hearings provide public sector employees the right of response to contest reasons for possible firing. At the heart of the complaints is the...

  • Volunteers drive DAV's gift of holiday meals

    Jana Peterson|Dec 3, 2021

The Carlton County DAV set a record with this year's community Thanksgiving: 900 meals served. And they did it in half the space they usually have. Because the kitchen and dining hall at Zion Lutheran Church weren't available due to the pandemic, the Disabled American Veterans volunteers consolidated operations at the Cloquet VFW. "It was definitely congested, to say the least," said the DAV's Raffy Johnson, who has spearheaded the event since the DAV took over five years ago. They had people...

  • Celebrate the holidays in Cloquet today

    Jana Peterson|Dec 3, 2021

It looks like Mother Nature is giving Santa time to celebrate in Cloquet before the snow falls. Santa's Home for the Holidays festivities are in full swing after kicking off Thursday night with Mrs. Claus at the library and a West End open house that saw a healthy number of citizens strolling through the city's oldest business district. Last night, Queen of Peace hosted Santa (with photos by Alan Johnson) at a spaghetti feed and craft show. Today, however, is the big day. Things started early...

Loudermill hearings provide public sector employees the right of response to...
