Ski jumpers and Nordic combined racers from Chicago, the Twin Cities, Coleraine and Ishpeming, Michigan made their way here Saturday to compete in the first Central Division competition of the season at Cloquet's Pine Valley. Out-of-town jumpers were astounded by the amount of snow in northern Minnesota. St. Paul's Joe Berens was the official Central Division coach on site Saturday, and called the conditions "wonderful." More than 2 feet of snow was certainly a good thing for jumping, as the...
One step at a time. That's the approach one consulting firm is recommending for repairs and renovations to the city's ice arenas, in particular The Barn. After spending close to $50,000 in October to replace the R-22 refrigerant that had leaked out of the aging pipes and ice plant at the more-than-40-year-old facility, determining options for fixing and replacing the cooling systems at both facilities has become a priority for the city. It's more complicated than systems simply getting old....

The Wrenshall school board certified its 2020 levy Monday night that shows a 43-percent increase in taxes for residents of the district. While that is a huge jump, it wasn’t unexpected as the board this fall approved a nonvoter-approved $9.3 million bonding project that will cost taxpayers more than $400,000 a year for 20 years. The bonding will improve air quality at the school. If there hadn’t been bonding, the tax increase for next year would have been about 6 percent. There were a few people at the Truth-In-Taxation meeting that took place...

In response to concerns from parents of students who would normally walk to school this year, the Cloquet School District is trying a “winter-only bus route” to pick up Washington Elementary, middle school and high school students who live too close to school to qualify for busing. The bus route started Monday, just in time for a cold snap that sent temperatures to -15 degrees Wednesday morning. Superintendent Michael Cary said he has not heard any numbers yet, as the service just started, but explained that the district sent the inf...

In January of this year, the council tabled a request from the Cloquet police department to purchase 26 Heckler & Koch VP9 (9mm) handguns at a cost of $17,277 after requesting additional information. On Tuesday night, they passed the same request - 26 H&K VP9 handguns - but this time the cost of the guns was significantly lower, at $12,974, a reduction from $688 per gun to $499. It was, however, still a more expensive bid than the second gun considered by the department, the Glock 19 (9mm)...
It’s a distinctly 21st-century phenomenon: Bentleyville Tour of Lights was born in Carlton County in 2001 and is now a huge, nationally recognized Christmas season event in Duluth’s Bayfront Park. It’s a lovely setting for the amazing display of lights, snowflakes and holiday cheer. Santa is available for questioning, by children and grownups alike, and if you’ve been nice he’ll give you a Bentleyville stocking cap. There are Christmas cookies, cider and hot chocolate to enjoy as you stroll through the displays or warm yourselves by the fire pi...
The Minnesota Board of Pardons is planning to issue its first ever posthumous pardon to a black man convicted of rape in Duluth. Many of you already know the story: In 1920, six black circus workers were arrested after being accused of rape and burglary against a white woman and her boyfriend. The outrage, probably due to commonly held racist beliefs at the time, was intense. A mob stormed the jail and eventually hung three of the men, in public, along First Street in downtown Duluth. A...
Kevin Olesen of Wrenshall replied on the Pine Knot Facebook page to Dave Chmielewski’s Dec. 6 column advocating for people to support a two-site solution in the upcoming Carlton/Wrenshall survey: Nailed it. ... without a positive outcome on the survey, at the legislature, and in a potential referendum vote next August the Raptors are in jeopardy of becoming extinct again. You should see what I saw [at the Carlton vs. Wrenshall basketball game] last night ... kids from both schools sitting together, laughing together and cheering for their f...

As I was mailing a package from the Duluth post office this week, the woman behind the counter noticed my address. "Wrenshall has the best burgers around, hands down!" she said. "I worked at that post office for a while and I would run across the street for Brickyard almost every day, although I had to start cutting back to once a week." I wholeheartedly agreed with her and promptly ordered takeout for my family that afternoon. A reminder that you can get your burgers and breakfast this...
In offering workshops and programs at Cloquet Library, the Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District seeks to better connect with residents with the goal of building up an understanding of all the conservation possibilities and growing community knowledge. This is mostly a new avenue for us. We do host events through the year, like watershed tours or Walk in the Woods, but they vary and typically are specific to grants or a project. These are great, but have limited scope. And...
This may be my last news column for a couple of weeks, as I had a total knee replacement scheduled for Dec. 16 at Cloquet Memorial Hospital. I do hope to be well enough to get back home to my computer to do the news, but who knows? Our sympathies to the family of Philip Lippo, 78, of Cromwell, who passed away in his home Friday, Dec. 13, 2019 with family at his side. A memorial service was scheduled for Dec. 19. Phil’s obituary appears in today’s edition of the Pine Knot News. Our sym...
