  • 'The man who was Santa Claus'

    Mike Creger, Pine Knot News|Dec 21, 2018

They came in droves to Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet. On this Wednesday in mid-September 1947, shops and factories closed, children eschewed school. There, at the church, flowers - some paid for by those children using coins from their piggy banks - were placed near the departed Victor Swenson. They came from the reservation. They came from the far-flung rural areas in Carlton County and Duluth. "The man who was Santa Claus" was dead, and the thousands of people whose lives he had touched...

  • Nordic ski team boasts talent and numbers

Dwight Cadwell, Pine Knot News Sports|Dec 21, 2018

Once again, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Nordic team has to charter two buses to get to its meets, because there are so many kids. In his first year as head coach, Arne Maijala said the sport just keeps growing in Cloquet, as it provides a good chance for kids to get outside and participate in a winter sport. The team is also a lot of fun, and Cloquet's Pine Valley offers a wonderful winter playground ... when there's enough snow to practice, which there isn't. In the meantime, he's got plenty of he...

  • Best Christmas Ever

    Dec 21, 2018

“Best Christmas Ever” is a popular charity with local roots. Founded by Don Liimatainen after his family surprised him during a particularly harsh Christmas a few years ago, the movement has spread nationwide. It’s a beautiful story. But this isn’t about BCE. Rather, it’s about how events like “Best Christmas Ever” have a much wider effect than their mission. Such movements often motivate us to become more charitable in our lives, more generous to those who are not as fortunate as us, and more content with the blessings we have. Such good fee...

  • LETTER to the editor

    Dec 21, 2018

Just a thought As the life and times of former President George H. W. Bush were memorialized after his death, one picture stands out. His family gathered on the lawn to celebrate Barbara’s 90th birthday — children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren — all smiling, because they are together for a special family event. Travel statistics during the holiday season show how willingly people sacrifice time and treasure to spend precious moments with their loved ones. Facebook photos are abundant with pictures of smiling faces, meals together, and l...

  • 'Baby, It's Cold Outside'

    Pete Radosevich, Harrys Gang|Dec 21, 2018

Some people are frothing this holiday season after some #MeToo people pointed out that the holiday classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ is a little creepy. These people are furiously offended that some other people are offended by things that don’t offend them. Confused? Extremists are always confusing. Well, the song is a little creepy, if it’s judged by today’s standards. Certainly, a song written about the boy-meets-girl cat-and-mouse mating rituals of post-war American culture would never...

  • Art and agriculture intersect, like hedgerows

    Ann Markusen, Community Columnist|Dec 21, 2018

Earlier this month, at the Magnolia Salon at Carlton's Oldenburg House, Annie Dugan presented challenging ideas on how art intersects with agriculture. She first showed a hilarious video of young farm kids riding various remarkable vehicles across farm fields and hillocks, and into ponds! Having fun. Dugan began with this quote from St. Francis of Assisi: "He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head...

  • Nikolaos

Parnell Thill, Notes from the Small Pond|Dec 21, 2018

The old man squints through the cold air and down to rooftops and updrifting chimney smoke, silver-snow farm fields, the golden glow of street lamps, dark holes of wilderness. The night surrounds him as he sails in air, his eight trained beasts heaving vapor from the effort. Their legs kick rhythmically, their breath deep and chugging as they drag on their reins, pulling. The old man sighs and feels his tired bones. “I am old,” he murmurs. He tugs off heavy mittens and kneads, with gnarled fin...

    Jennie K. Hanson, Columnist|Dec 21, 2018

With Christmas just a few days away as I write this, it is a good time to stop and think of others and how they are doing during the holidays. I usually don’t get around to sending a lot of Christmas cards, but do try to keep in touch with friends all during the year via e-mail or regular mail. I am still one of those old-fashioned people who write letters and love to receive them, too. Ray Lally says Dec. 21 is his favorite day of the year. Why, you may ask? Well, after Dec. 21 our minutes of d...

The good news is the Wilderness picked up impressive back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday at home over the bottom-dwelling Brookings Blizzard. "It was an important weekend from a standpoint of making up ground in the standings," said...

  • Greyhounds slip past CEC in overtime

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot News Sports|Dec 21, 2018

For most of last Thursday's hockey game against Duluth East, the Lumberjacks led the game 1-0. Then a late goal in regulation and another early in overtime lifted the Greyhounds to a 2-1 come-from-behind win at the Duluth Heritage Center. The first period was tightly played, but Cloquet-Esko-Carlton finally broke through when Jon Baker picked up a loose puck and made a spin move as he directed the puck on East goalie Brody Rabold. The blast found its way into the back of the net giving the...

  • Christmas Wish

Bret Baker, Pine Knot News Outdoors|Dec 21, 2018

My Christmas wish is not for more stuff. If I'm honest, I have enough rods, reels, and tackle to last me until the Vikings win the Super Bowl. What I really want is what I already have: My wife, my family, my job along with the time and freedom to experience new things. This past year I've had the chance to fish new waters and hunt new ground. The family and I also headed south over spring break and explored new territory between St. Louis and Nashville. When I think back, it's always travel...

  • DNR briefs

DNR issues ice warning for aerated lakes The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has issued its annual ice safety warning for lakes with winter aeration systems. Aeration creates areas of thin ice and open water that are extremely hazardous to people and pets. Open water areas can shift or change shapes, depending on weather conditions, and leaks may develop in air lines, creating other areas of weak ice or open water. The updated list of aerated lakes and more information is available at mndnr.gov/eco/lakeaeration. “We’re urging peo...
