  • Small in numbers, but mighty on the mat

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 24, 2021

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton wrestling team may be low in numbers, but they are high in talent. Last Tuesday the Lumberjacks took on Mille Lacs and came away with four wins in the five matches that took place at Cloquet High School small gymnasium. "That's kind of been our M.O.," said coach Al Denman. "We just don't have the overall number of wrestlers that most schools do, so we lose points for every weight class that we can't put someone on the mat. But our kids that do get out on the mat are very...

The game started slow and at halftime the Bombers led by a 16-14 score. From a Bomber standpoint, they struggled against a team that featured three players over 6-foot-5. “I would say defense was the biggest factor in the low-scoring first half,” said Barnum coach Rich Newman. “We did not shoot well and that had to do with their size...

Marina Dostal scored for CEC before many fans got a chance to get into their seats at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake, giving the Lumberjacks the narrow road win.
