  • Young Rebels strike paydirt

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 31, 2021

Playing with a young roster and far fewer players than most, the Moose Lake Area boys hockey team faces steep odds nearly every game they step onto the ice. But after opening the season with eight straight losses, the Rebels finally found their first win of the season on Dec. 17 when they downed North Shore 6-2. "From where we started the season, this group is much improved," said Rebels coach Lee Costley. "We have a lot of young kids who are stepping up from the bantam level and they have to...

  • Rodd's Ramblings: Rol Bromberg, Lumberjacks legend, dies

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 31, 2021

When you walk into the Cloquet football field complex, you'll see a picture of a man with glasses holding a football. The high school football field is named after him. Roland Bromberg, known to many as "Rollie," "Brom" or "Rol," was a former coach, teacher and administrator for the Cloquet School District. He passed away last Wednesday in Northfield, Minnesota. After growing up as an outstanding high school athlete in four sports in Fergus Falls, Bromberg went on to star in four sports at...

  • Cloquet grad hits Olympic trials

    Jana Peterson|Dec 31, 2021

Cloquet's Aidan Ripp squeaked into the Olympic Trials last week, took 12th place competing against the top Nordic combined athletes in the U.S., and feels pretty good about it. "The goal for me was to get there," Ripp told the Pine Knot this week about Friday's competition at Lake Placid, New York. "It was a fun time with no real pressure. Not to be un-optimistic, but to get to the Olympics I would have had to win everything, beat all the top athletes. It was kind of out of my wheelhouse."...

On Monday evening last week, the Cromwell-Wright School gym hosted choral and instrumental performances of young people of all ages. The bleachers on the gym's south side were crammed with parents, grandparents, siblings and community members. Choir teacher MaryRose Varo led half a dozen ensembles, including the full middle school and high school choirs, through heartening songs of Christmas. Andrew Morrisette, the band director, led various instrumentalists through rousing, energetic pieces...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Pine Knot News|Dec 31, 2021

I was encouraged to see so many folks attending Christmas Eve services in our area churches. It seems that we sometimes forget the reason for the season, but when folks come together to worship together it renews our faith in humankind. Now we can look forward to the new year and hopefully better times. So, have a merry and blessed 2022. It seems that we are getting more and more scam calls now. Lately, scammers pretending to be pastors are sending emails and texts, saying they need a favor from you in the form of gift cards. Please don’t fall...

  • Dispose of trees smartly

    Pine Knot News|Dec 31, 2021

Decorating the house is a much-loved activity during the holidays. “But we don’t want to let those lovely greens bring trouble to our landscape,” says Lori Seele from the Duluth Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area. “Various pests that are not native to our region can hitch a ride on Christmas trees, wreaths, boughs, vines, and plants with colorful fruits and seeds.” According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the disease dangers include elongate hemlock scale, boxwood blight, Oriental bittersweet, gypsy moth, brown marmorate...

  • Korby's Connections: 1996 snowmobile adventure got a bit hairy

    Steve Korby|Dec 31, 2021

This saga sounds like the backdrop to a TV reality show: snowmobiles in the wilderness on the Minnesota/Canada isolated border with subzero record-breaking temperatures, whiteout blizzard conditions and little food, water, or shelter. Due to the weather stress, those snowmobiles eventually became unmovable, but all three riders survived the overnight ordeal. For Cloquet’s Tim Carle and Johnny and Sis Leon, it was an outdoor challenge they lived to tell about. It could have easily turned the othe...
