Spencer Rousseau's midcourt three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Carlton Bulldogs a two-point win in a packed Wrenshall gymnasium Tuesday night and the Brown Jug after a one-year hiatus in the rivalry. Carlton defeated Wrenshall 52-50, the same tallies when the two teams met in Carlton earlier this season. Carlton gets the Brown Jug based on the long-held tradition that the team without it has to win it back on the opposing team's floor. The win for the Bulldogs snapped a five-game losing...
The Battle for the Little Brown Jug is a huge game for the schools of Carlton and Wrenshall. Each year both the girls and boys teams battle for the jug as well as the prestige of holding onto the trophy for another season. This year's version of the girls' "battle" took place Monday night in Carlton with the Bulldogs handling the Wrens by the score of 57-42. "It was a good game with a nice crowd, which helped out the atmosphere," said Carlton coach Lucas Beireis. "It is fun to see the gym fill...

News last week that Minnesota Senator Tony Lourey was leaving his District 11 seat to become commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Services sparked a fast and furious race for his senate seat. Additionally, the accelerated timeline of the special election has also created challenges for everyone from the candidates themselves to political parties and county officials tasked with running the election. “These elections will be conducted in the same manner as we did last fall for the A...

With schools in Minnesota closed for the holiday break, most athletic teams in the state and in the area will be busy focusing on winter holiday tournaments or select games over the break. Not every coach chooses to compete over break. "We used to play in a tournament over the [holidays] but we decided not to and let the kids get a break, focus on getting healthy and get set for the second half of the season," said Moose Lake-Willow River boys basketball head coach Wes Cummings. However, if you...

Man dies after truck falls on him A 59-year-old Carlton man died Sunday as the result of an accident when he was working outside on a vehicle. Sheriff Kelly Lake said the 911 call came in at about 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16. Lake said two deputies arrived before the ambulance and were able to jack up the truck and pull Jeffrey Scott Ryan from underneath the vehicle. The deputies tried to revive him, then emergency medical personnel also tried lifesaving procedures when they arrived, but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene. Services are...
It's the winter version of Neighbors Night Out this tonight when local basketball teams hit the floor with schools that are less than five miles from each other door-to-door. The first game will feature Cloquet from Section 7AAA traveling a couple of miles down Highway 61 to play Section 7AA power Esko at 7:15 p.m. Game two will be another next-door-neighbor rivalry between two teams expected to be in the Section 7A hunt: Carlton and Wrenshall. Both Cloquet and Esko are coming off tough losses o...
Both the Cromwell-Wright and Barnum boys basketball teams pride themselves on playing tough, hard-nosed defense. All of that and more was on display Tuesday night as the Cards opened their season with a 45-35 home win over the Bombers. "The game was two good defensive teams doing battle," said Cards coach Bill Pocernich. "I felt like we had control of them on our defensive end, and I'm sure that they felt the same way on our end. Good shots were hard to come by for both teams, especially in the...

The Carlton County Board of Commissioners voted Nov. 13 to sell the Shaw Library building to its longtime tenant, the Carlton County Historical Society, for exactly $1. And that is not much more than what the county paid for the building when it took possession of the historic property from the city of Cloquet. It was a decision months in the making, a debate that started when county officials decided they didn’t want to make the large investments required to renovate the former library and solicited proposals for the building — home to CCHS si...
Recount doesn’t change a thing Carlton County Auditor Paul Gassert said the hand recount of the District 4 Carlton County Commissioner race resulted in exactly the same ballot count as the election night vote, which means Mark Thell will be the new District 4 Commissioner starting in January. Carlton county board chairwoman Susan Zmyslony had officially requested the recount for the District 4 race after results showed Thell upsetting her by just 16 votes. There were 3,806 votes cast in the race. Thell had 1,905 to Zmyslony’s 1,889. There wer...
This past weekend jazz singer Bruce Henry returned to the Northland to perform again at the Carlton Room in the Oldenburg House. His three-octave range and extraordinary versatility energized the room when he was there in June, and once again he sent electricity through the assembled audience. The Carlton Room bills itself as a performance space with a nightclub atmosphere in a historic house and timeless setting. In a very short time - formally dedicated in the summer of 2017 - it has...
One hundred years ago, while folks in northern Minnesota were just beginning to recover from the Oct. 12 fires and the Spanish influenza after both swept through the area, news of a war-ending armistice reached Minneapolis just before 2 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. As described by author Curt Brown in his “Minnesota 1918” book, sirens went off, “lights blinked on in homes, and people poured into the streets.” Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the armistice with Germany...
The Carlton County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved buying the present Cloquet City Hall for $750,000, paid over six years with no interest, at their meeting Monday, Oct. 9. “Opportunities to find space at a reasonable price has been our goal,” explained County Coordinator Dennis Genereau. “This building is adjacent to the Health and Human Services complex and its parking area. We first hoped to sign an agreement at the $600,000 figure but several private parties were interested in the building. Fond Du Lac Band was eager to buy b...
Sawyer’s Rick Klevorn voted absentee in the second-floor hallway of the Carlton County Courthouse Tuesday, as he has done so many times before. “I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do it,” said Klevorn, adding that he’s been absentee-voting for at least 10 years. “It’s just easy.” Klevorn may be a trendsetter, but the general population in Carlton County is now catching up to him. County Auditor Paul Gassert said the number of absentee ballots cast in the county is at its highest point ever, and t...
A busy week of high school volleyball continued last week with sectional games being played on both Wednesday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 26. A number of local teams were eliminated, but there are still some intriguing matches looming on the horizon as this issue of the Pine Knot News goes to press. In section 7AA, Esko knocked Cloquet out of the playoff picture by beating the 'Jacks 3-2 in a thriller Oct. 24 in Esko. Cloquet took the first game 26-24. "I just told the girls to refocus after we...
The 2019 Carlton County Senior and Caregiver Guides are now available at the Volunteer Services building in Carlton. I also have a lot of them and will be putting them in area businesses and handing them out to the senior clubs. These guides are full of much-needed information on issues for our area senior citizens. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Patricia “Pat” A. Peterson, 83, of Cromwell, who died Oct. 19, 2018 in Cardinal Court, Cromwell. Services were held Oct. 25 in Atkins-Northl...
