  • On The Farm: Seasons end, but not the chores

    John Hatcher|Oct 27, 2023

It’s fitting that on Sunday morning the sun rose at nearly the same place in the sky and at nearly the same time as it did the day we started this farm season back on April 1. That’s the day Heather-Marie trudged across the snow and turned on the heater in the greenhouse to start the first round of seeds for this growing season. They would be planted in our field and eventually feed our 45 CSA members and our farmstand customers. And now they’ll feed us throughout the winter that’s about t...

  • Local runners dominate at Polar League meet

    Jana Peterson|Oct 20, 2023

Great cross country runners are built over time. While genetics probably helps, it's the miles and miles of running that can really make the difference. Raptors runner Jack Riley is proof. After ramping up his training this summer and fall, the Wrenshall senior raced to a decisive win in Thursday's Polar League conference championship meet. Riley finished the 5K race on Pincushion Mountain in 16 miutes, 42.20 seconds, just over 19 seconds ahead of second. The front pack of four or five runners s...

  • Animal rescue group grows

    Joe Bowen|Oct 13, 2023

Five dogs and nine house cats roam through Taylor and Shannon Hansberry's Barnum home, napping in sunbeams, nuzzling the couple or their son Ruxin for attention, and gently but firmly approaching newcomers to see if they'll offer the same. Nearby, a pair of camera-shy feral cats live in a small enclosure the family maintains in their garage. The Hansberrys are one of a handful of families in the recently formed Carlton County Animal Rescue, members of which began fostering lost and stray...

  • Letter to the editor: Firefighters did a great job

    Oct 13, 2023

On Sept. 4, Labor Day, my 160-acre Nemadji Creek tree farm was in the direct path of the Carlton County Road 11 wildfire. Because of the quick and effective response, the damage to my woodlands was minimal and none of my pine and spruce plantations were burned. Over the subsequent days, I was in close contact with county law enforcement, and volunteer and professional firefighters from the local to the state level. At times there were up to 67 pairs of boots on the ground or in the air. I want to express my sincere thanks to those on the scene...

  • An epic season is brewing in Barnum

    Brady Slater|Oct 6, 2023

When Jim Charboneau decided to chronicle the Barnum football season for the Moose Lake Star-Gazette, the proud grandfather to the team's quarterback figured somebody needed to pick up the bullhorn, so it might as well be him. "Barnum usually hasn't gotten much ink locally," Jim said. "I decided I would write articles for the football team." The grandson, Hayden Charboneau, plays quarterback and is one of 10 seniors on the team. "There's all kinds of things to brag about with him," Jim said....

  • SWCD update: Learn how to battle invasive buckthorn

    Alyssa Bloss|Oct 6, 2023

It’s the season of stunning reds, yellows, oranges, crisp autumn mornings with brilliant blue skies. It’s also the time of year many of us northern folks look forward to tromping around in the woods and wetlands with our hunting dogs chasing our choice of wild game. Those of you who frequent the woods in the fall may have noticed a particular shrub that is still green and holds onto its leaves way longer than the surrounding trees. What is it? Buckthorn. These invaders may already be a thorn in your side. Look in your backyard or favorite par...

  • Dollar store stakes a claim in Barnum

    Brady Slater|Sep 29, 2023

Sometime in winter 2024, the city of Barnum will be less of a food and retail desert than it is. Dollar General is moving onto Main Street, with construction already begun on a store which figures to include staples such as milk. While not a grocery store, Dollar General will fill a longtime void in a community that sees its residents travel to Moose Lake, Cloquet and beyond for merchandise such as cleaning supplies, health and beauty products, stationery, seasonal decorations, and some snacks...
