It’s been a couple of weeks since I have been able to get some news into my columns. It’s not because I didn’t want to but because I just couldn’t. I was in the hospital for 12 days in July and have been taking antibiotic treatments every day since for an infection in my colon. Hopefully that is cleared up and I can now proceed with the cancer surgery. It’s been a long-haul, but I’m looking forward to a full recovery in the near future. Next weekend, Aug.11-13, Kettle River will mark the 36th celebration of Ma & Pa Kettle Days. After the July 25 round of the 8th District Division II American Jr. Legion playoffs, Carlton County had two local teams still in the running. Esko was undefeated and Barnum-Moose Lake-Willow River (BMW) had one loss in the double elimination tournament - the loss coming against Esko. A former Carlton County resident is accused of murdering a man and breaking into a Minneapolis apartment 39 years ago. Matthew Russell Brown, 66, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree burglary by electronically filed criminal complaint on May 26 in Fourth District Hennepin County Court. A man died after apparently hitting a tree on his ATV last week. A motorist came upon the crash and dialed 911 at 7:52 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, on the 3500 block of Pine Road in Barnum Township. Paul Douglas Nelson, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, the initial investigation revealed Nelson was driving an ATV northbound on Pine Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree. A barn on the 2200 block of Olson Road in Blackhoof Township caught on fire, likely the result of a lightning strike around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, a Carlton County Sheriff’s Office news release said. A spate of incidents late Saturday afternoon, July 8, kept emergency responders busy as they reacted to an ATV crash, vehicle crash and house fire all within a half hour of each other. The first call was just after 4 p.m. for an ATV crash in the Nemadji State Forest in Holyoke Township.
