    Cornelia Marjorie Ballou, 91, of Barnum passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at New Perspective in Barnum. Cora was born June 14, 1932, in Kettle River to Steven and Adelaide Tomczak. She began learning in the one-room school in Kettle River, later attending and graduating from Moose Lake High School in 1950. Cora lived in Duluth and married Leland Ballou on Dec. 27, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Split Rock Township. She was employed by Kelly Furniture as a bookkeeper.     Burton O. Peterson, 93, passed away June 25, 2023, at Evergreen Senior Living in Cloquet with his loving family by his side. He was born June 15, 1930, in Mahtowa. Burton graduated from Barnum High School, and held various jobs in the Mahtowa and Cloquet area before serving in the U.S. Army. He then worked for Potlatch for 36 years.     A dramatic emergency landing on Interstate 35 last week did no damage to the plane or the pilot, Daniel Blace of Saginaw. The emergency landing on the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 between Barnum and Mahtowa took place around 1 p.m. Friday, June 16.     Carlton County's $75 million justice center is 28-percent complete, jail administrator Paul Coughlin told Carlton County Commissioners at the June 13 meeting.     Firefighters responded to a structure fire in Barnum Township just after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. A caller reported that a home was totally engulfed by fire on the 3000 block of Lone Oak Road east of the City of Barnum, the Carlton County Sheriff’s office reported. Occupants were all out of the home by the time crews arrived and helped with trying to extinguish the fire. It is believed a pet died. The home was considered a total loss.     More than 40 local athletes participated in the Minnesota Boys and Girls State Track meet last weekend at St. Michael-Albertville. A number of those athletes had top showings and made it to the finals. Class AA boys Miles Fischer had a big day for Cloquet by finishing in third place in the 1,600 meter run.     Authorities said there were no injuries when a small airplane landed on the northbound lane of Interstate 35 between Barnum and Mahtowa this afternoon (Friday, June 16) around 1 pm.     Edwin Ralph Henninger passed away at the age of 96 on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born, raised and spent his life in the rural area east of Barnum. Ed worked for the Soo Line Railroad from the age of 15 to 65. He worked for years on track gangs, followed by dozer and dragline operations.
