  • Old-timers' game brings historic Blackhoof Valley team together again

    Steve Korby|Aug 19, 2022

The mystery may have been solved. On Monday, Aug. 15, pharmacies across Carlton County were having an unexplained surge in sales of Bengay, ice packs, and Ace bandages. The reason may have been those seeking recovery help from the old-timers' game played by the 1972 Blackhoof Valley Men's Fastpitch Softball team. Fifty years ago, the team went 18-0 in the Carlton County 10-team league, and they were reunited recently to remember days of old and see if they could still hit, run, and field. The...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Aug 12, 2022

Recently, I spent four hours going through and organizing all the Cromwell-Wright yearbooks (formerly known as “The Cromwellian”) I have collected over the years. To my surprise, I have four file boxes of duplicate yearbooks. Since I do have every one of the yearbooks starting with the 1925 issue, I am wondering if there is anyone reading this who would like to have any of these duplicates? I don’t have duplicates of every year, but I may have the one(s) you may want. It was fun getting them...

    Jana Peterson|Aug 5, 2022

If early voting is any indicator, next week’s primary election may not be a barnburner in Carlton County. Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. Kelly Lampel, chief deputy auditor/treasurer for Carlton County, said the office was prepared for a much higher turnout in advance of the primary, but relatively few people have requested absentee ballots. “It’s nothing at all compared to 2020,” she said. “But primary elections often have lower turnout, especially during a non-presidential year.” Still, it’s not too late...

The coming school year marks the first time in two years any students will pay for lunch, after a universal free school lunch program was allowed to expire at the end of June. Parents are encouraged to fill out forms to apply for free and reduced-price meals, something they also haven’t had to do over the past two years, when every child could have f...

Carlton Daze got off to a running start last weekend, with kids' races and the annual 5K race Friday evening followed by the 50-mile Voyageur Ultramarathon Saturday. The annual event offered a little bit of everything: lots of music and food options, tournaments galore, a car show, kids' coin digs and kayak races for older, bolder folk. • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Aug 5, 2022

Well, here it is — August. So far, our summer has gone well, as we haven’t had all the terrible weather disasters other parts of the country are experiencing. We are blessed to live in this area and can only hope for better times in the disaster areas. It’s also great to see so many of the hayfields all cut and baled up. Our field was done between the rains with no rain on it at all. Great timing, Dave! There will be an open house celebration for Ray and Alice Gurske, Sheldon and the late Mario...

    Jul 15, 2022

What are we missing? We think (1) climate change is an existential issue requiring major, immediate, bipartisan government action; (2) government and policy that reflect the majority would promote a more perfect union, and (3) more unites us than divides us. But others disagree. We invited you to tell us. What are we missing? We’ll be ready with notebook and pencil to write down what you tell us, at these locations 4-5 p.m. Thursdays: • TJ’s in Mahtowa July 14 • The porch at the Chickadee in Barnum July 21 • Tables in front of Joe Jitters i...

What could have been deemed perfectly wet and cool running conditions for Monday's Sawdust 5K turned out to be enough of a nuisance to stop a number of runners from signing up the day of the race. "Our pre-registration numbers were right around where they normally are," said Sam Jacobson, who, alongside his wife, Julie, is a race director. "With the forecast for rain and bad weather on race day, our normal race day registration numbers were down. We didn't have the number of walkers we would...
