Carlton/Wrenshall Entering the week, the Raptors sported an impressive 8-4 record and are showing signs that the cooperative program is going to be a team to be...
Carlton County commissioners got a taste of some of the challenges they will face in crafting a budget for 2023 at Tuesday’s board meeting. “Fuel costs are at $4 and rising,” said county coordinator Dennis Genereau. “The rise of gas and fuel prices impacts everything we do in the programs we run.” Genereau explained that the costs to run the new justice center are still in the planning stage. Another groundskeeper and at least a couple of custodians are being considered. Additional staff for the Sheriff’s Office and the court system are...

Local baseball teams have had a tough time getting onto the diamond this spring, but last Thursday Barnum was finally able to host a game as they downed neighboring Carlton 6-1. Leading the way for the Bombers was pitcher Caleb Hautajarvi, who pitched a masterful game. The junior handled the Bulldogs with a 12-strikeout performance. "Caleb did that all last year as a sophomore for us," said Barnum coach Tony Bender. "He's the best pitcher we had last year, he throws well, has good pitch...

The latest Cloquet High School spring play is literally magical ... and will look familiar if you're a Harry Potter fan. But don't expect that name to come up. Sure, there is a person referred to as "Harry," or "Potter," but he's not the star of the show. Rather, this play is about a certain famous fictional school of magic, but the focus is on the Hufflepuffs, who just happened to be there too. "Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic" is a 2015...
Mother Nature has not been kind to local high school baseball teams this spring. Cold, snowy and rainy weather has caused more than normal cancellations and postponements in the northern half of the state. The Pine Knot News this week caught up with coaches for a preview of local teams this season. Cloquet Cloquet head coach Tyler Olin is looking for improvement on a team that struggled to a below .500 record last season. "We were 7-15 last year," Olin said. "We had six seniors who graduated...
On Sunday, we took a day off. There are a million things we could do; we should do. But we've also learned how important rest is. A day to recharge and reflect. Ok, to be fair, we're trying to learn. Eliot Coleman writes, in his "The New Organic Grower" book: "There is a strong temptation when starting out in farming ... to try to do it all right now ... Rest and reflection not only heal the body but help provide insight into how to get more accomplished with less work in the future so the same...

After approving a two-year contract with the teachers union, Barnum school board members expressed their relief that the process was over and that negotiations went well. “Things went fantastic,” board member Jamie Fuglestad said. Board chairwoman Jessica Unkelhaeuser listed the terms during the meeting Tuesday, April 19: 1 percent in steps the first year, 1.25 percent in steps the second year, a sick bank was created with language changes, and there were other language changes. The board also approved a Shared Service Agreement between the...
The Carlton County Historical Society has this iconic photo of a Greyhound bus with formal lettering on the border saying, simply, “Barnum, Minnesota.” It’s as if it were a promotional piece or souvenir photo. Who knows? Close inspection shows that it was a charter bus, so perhaps this was a special occasion back in the 1950s. Was there a bus stop in Barnum? Can you divine where this photo was taken, given the background? Let us know at the History Mystery desk, news@PineKnot...

It was an exciting night in the Cromwell-Wright school auditorium last Thursday. It began with 11 of our high school choral students singing their hearts out in solos, duets, and ensembles. The solos included two operatic pieces, both in Italian. Andrea Pocernich sang “Che Fiero Costume,” an Italian aria that furiously castigates Cupid for his machinations as a “tyrannous mentor.” Lithuanian exchange student Augustas Poskus sang the powerful “Vittoria, Mio Core,” celebrating the protagonist...
The Barnum school board took unprecedented action to hire Bill Peel as a half-time shared superintendent during a special meeting on Thursday, March 31. Peel is also superintendent of the Willow River school district. “The opportunity presented itself to change to a half-time superintendent,” board chair Jessica Unkelhaeuser explained. “With that opportunity, we’ll be looking at a full-time high school principal and a full-time elementary principal.” The board passed a motion to change the original proposal of hiring a full-time superinte...
The warm weather of spring and the melting snow has local track teams getting ready for another exciting season. Take a look at some of these athletes in this preview of the 2022 track and field season. Cromwell-Wright Longtime Cromwell boys and girls track coach Dave Foster welcomed 35 athletes just a couple of weeks ago. Some of the very best runners in the area sport the Cardinals logo.
