After three innings of play at Chub Lake last Thursday, the Bombers looked like they were on the way to a win with a 3-0 lead. That all changed in the fourth inning when the Bulldogs exploded for five runs and eventually pulled away for an 11-7 win. "It was a fun game," said Carlton coach Ryan Schmidt last week. Barnum edged ahead in the third inning with runs by Matt Berry, Henry Dammer and Caleb Hautajarvi. The inning started with Berry walking stealing second and then Dammer walked before Hau...
I was taught at an early age that land, for the most part, does not change. It is the forest and the plants that naturally grow there that always are adapting to the natural forces of the earth. Tornadoes, wind shears, fire, heavy snow and ice, groves of trees past their maturity, and disease will thin the timber and, at times, clear the land regardless of what man tries to do. The last of the glaciers left 15,000 to 20,000 years ago, retreating north. All vegetation had been ground off with a...
The video is amazing. The reaction from Barnum High School sophomores Kate Ferrin and Ava Gran tells you all you need to know about how big a deal it was to find out last weekend that they are national champions. "We got first in nationals," Gran breathlessly says in an exhilarating reaction recorded online as news came May 8 that the team's national Business Professionals of America (BPA) project was deemed the best in the country. Days later, Gran was still in a daze. "It's crazy. It's...
Things were tight through the first couple of innings during the Carlton and Wrenshall baseball game Tuesday. That changed in the top of the third when the Bulldogs plated 12 runs and eventually coasted to a 21-2 win at Braun Park. "I thought their pitcher (Zeke Rousseau) pitched well for them at the beginning," said Carlton coach Ryan Schmidt. "I also thought our starter, Joey Solomon, did a nice job in his three innings pitched. He struck out three and just did a nice job." The offensive...
A recent state ruling regarding the state's open meeting law (OML) and public meetings during the pandemic had area school districts scrambling to make sure they were following the law, and changing procedures if they weren't. The Minnesota Commissioner of Administration issued an advisory opinion on April 19, in response to The Timberjay newspaper publisher Marshall Helmberger, ruling that the St. Louis County School Board violated the state's open meeting law when at least a quorum of school board members met in person, but members of the pub...

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels relied on the strong pitching arm of sophomore pitcher Alex Hoffman last Tuesday as they pulled away to a 6-2 victory over the Barnum Bombers in Willow River. "Tuesday's game against Barnum was actually one of our better-weather games," said ML/WR coach Kelly Goeb. "Our field was a little damp in the pitcher's circle and around home plate, but it was still very playable. Luckily, the field is on sand so it dries quickly." Both Hoffman and Barnum pitcher...
It is now apparent that the construction of a new jail/justice center will be the most significant Carlton County project since the Carlton County courthouse was built in 1922. County coordinator Dennis Genereau related that one of the candidates for a new Carlton County auditor/treasurer position shared that observation during the job interviews earlier in the day before the Carlton County Board Adjourned Session Monday, April 26. With that as a backdrop, Genereau requested permission from the...

Drivers passing the Cloquet Armory Monday morning saw what appeared to be a mountain of garbage bags outside the bright green DAV donation boxes. Happily, those bags were mostly filled with clothing donations members of the local Disabled American Veterans chapter will take to the Savers store in Duluth. The local DAV has a deal with the thrift store, which gives money to the veterans organization in return. Unhappily, there was also a fair amount of "junk" mixed in with the donations. DAV...
Since the first Moose Run in 2000 on the first Saturday in May, it has become the unofficial kickoff event for the busy summer season in Moose Lake. The registration fee is $20, and each participant will receive a $20 gift card from their choice of a participating business. Pay $20; get $20. It’s virtually free. Gift cards will be mailed out during the week of May 10 and can be used through the e...
Carlton County seniors are winning the war on Covid, one shot at a time. As of Tuesday, 94 percent of Carlton County residents 65 and older have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to Public Health and Human Services director Dave Lee. Among all residents over the age of 16 — who are all now eligible to be vaccinated — 56 percent have received at least one dose. “From a state percentage standpoint, I think we’re the seventh-highest [in vaccination rate] out out of 87 c...
People streamed in and out of the convention center at Black Bear Casino Resort last Thursday, eager to take another step toward a post-pandemic life. By the end of the day, another 455 residents of Carlton County and members of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa had received their first doses of the Covid-19 Moderna vaccine. The event came in a partnership between the band and Carlton County and was staffed by workers in the health departments from each. The Fond du Lac band...

There will be a special memorial remembrance for Siiri Peterson at Bethany in Cromwell April 11, at the 10:30 worship service. Coffee and cake will be served in the Fellowship Hall, and all are invited to pay tribute to Siiri. It won’t be long before the hummingbirds return to our area. If you do put out feeders, remember to not use red dye in the juice you make for them. According to Birds & Blooms magazine, the red dye is very harmful to hummingbirds. The Cromwell-Wright School office is c...

When Barnum met Upsala in the Section 5A semifinals March 24, the Bombers knew they would be facing a team with both athleticism and speed. Barnum fell behind early, but hung around and fell 66-56 to the Cardinals. “They rely on spreading the floor,” said Barnum coach Rich Newman. “They like to dribble and drive and then kick the ball out for the three-pointer.” The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-2 lead and had the Bombers in a bit of trouble early in the game. Barnum trailed by just four at...

In the Section 7AA girls basketball playoffs the No. 1 seeded Eskomos, not surprisingly, are still standing and were set to play No. 4 seed Crosby-Ironton Wednesday as this issue of the Pine Knot News went to press. Esko beat Eveleth-Gilbert 61-31 in the quarterfinals on Saturday after getting a bye in the first round. Jayden Karppinen had a huge night for the Eskomos by scoring 30 points and nearly outscoring the Golden Bears herself. If the Eskomos won Wednesday, they were set to advance to th...

In the second round, Barnum defeated McGregor 50-41. After upsetting the No. 5 seeded Cromwell-Wright Cards last week, the McGregor Mercuries tried to do the same against No. 4 seeded Barnum.
