You could almost hear a delirious giggle accompanying Annette Christian's email sent with an assortment of assembled jigsaw puzzles she and husband Butch, above, have done over the past many months under the Covid-19 pandemic at home in Cloquet. "Puzzles, puzzles and more puzzles," Annette wrote in all capital letters. Steven Brown of Minneapolis, a 1970 Cloquet High School graduate, says he's been creating artwork inspired by the pandemic. One work is called "Autumn in the Year of Covid."...
I've read and listened to a lot of stories in the past week about "the moment" when people realized that the global pandemic was going to change their lives as they knew it. While we'd been living with the impact of the crisis for months, for me, everything changed within minutes after the group photo at right was taken a year ago. I had just finished up another workshop at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, where I was working as a visiting professor through...

Cloquet High School students will return to full in-person learning effective Tuesday, March 16. That is happening despite the objections of the teachers union, which requested the district delay the return until April 6, the start of the fourth quarter, to more safely address the risks of Covid-19. Superintendent Michael Cary said he brought it to the Cloquet school board for a vote Monday rather than just an FYI because of the letter from the Education Minnesota Cloquet executive board, which noted it was representing roughly 50 percent of...

The Bombers jumped on the back of Rayna Klejeski to an impressive 50-34 girls basketball win over the Wrens in Wrenshall on Friday night. Barnum sprinted out to a 33-13 halftime lead and continued to feed Klejeski in the second half where she scored 14 more points in leading her team to the win. "We just couldn't match up against Klejeski," said Wrens coach Daimen LaFave. "She was just too tough for us inside." Klejeski nearly outscored the entire Wrenshall squad herself by finishing with 33 of...
One can only imagine how loud the South Ridge gym was by the end of regulation Monday night in an incredibly close game against Barnum. With his team trailing by three points and time winding down, the Panthers got a bit of heroics from Jaxson Bennett, who drained a 3-pointer that tied the game. That score allowed the Panthers to proceed to an impressive 74-71 double-overtime win over the Bombers. "We drew the set up just as we run it in practice," said Panthers coach Phil Pliska. "The guys ran...
It has been a whole year since this plague of Covid-19 first crept into the Northland, and the days of mass vaccination have finally arrived. It is new, and yet not so new to me. I was a product of a Minnesota education that celebrated the wonders and power of science and trusted our doctors and scientists when they said we should do something. I was in an elementary Kalevala school line that first got polio shots and other immunizations that surely protected us so we could lead productive...
For two weeks in a row now, Carlton County has put out alerts letting people know there are openings for vaccinations at their weekly vaccine clinics and asking them to call 218-499-6310 to register for an appointment. Public information officer Meghann Levitt said the county doesn’t know very far in advance how many openings it will have for its vaccinations at the Barnum garage. Notices can’t run in the pages of the Pine Knot News, because they don’t even know how many doses are coming. Instead, people with internet access can check the C...

Marilyn was privileged to know Jesus from her early days on Earth. She was a lover of God’s word and faithful in prayer. Marilyn was an exceptionally kind and gentle woman who spent her 90 years pouring out her life for her family and many others. She was a giver. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and G...
The Pine Knot News asked the superintendents of the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts to update readers on the state of consolidation. Wrenshall superintendent Kim Belcastro weighs in here: Since being hired as superintendent of Wrenshall school in 2012, the Carlton and Wrenshall districts have been in and out of consolidation talks for at least eight of the nine years. Many community members from the two districts will state that these talks have been going on for decades. It has been my priority to work closely with the Wrenshall school...

Don't look now, but the South Ridge Panthers girls basketball team is serving notice that they are going to be a tough team to beat come playoff time. The Panthers notched their fifth win in a row and their 10th win over the last 11 games when they defeated the Carlton Bulldogs 54-31 Thursday night. "It was a hard-fought victory for us and Carlton made us work very hard," said South Ridge coach Brad Olesiak. The Bulldogs fought hard to stay with the Panthers in the first half and trailed just...

It's beginning to look like this school year will be a turnaround from previous school year, at least in terms of the pandemic. Last year, students enjoyed school as usual until mid-March, when Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Health abruptly informed schools they would need to close March 18-27. But students never came back - the school year was finished via distance learning, with students, teachers, parents and other staff figuring things out on the fly. This time around it may...
The Carlton County board of commissioners gave its blessing Tuesday, Feb. 22 for two township grant projects that will compete for limited transportation funding from an annual Legislature initiative for Greater Minnesota. County engineer JinYeene Neumann requested the board’s support at the adjourned session of the county board Monday, Feb. 22. Almost all the Carlton County townships inquired into the possibility of funding needed township road projects, but the highway department staff explained that the competition throughout the state w...
The Rugged Spruce golf club, in association with Re/Max Results and team leader Randy Myhre, raised more than $800 to support the 2021 Barnum Junior Class Prom committee in a recent fundraiser. A check, see photo, was presented to advisors Kathy Parker and Alycia Dammer at the Rugged Spruce clubhouse. Private donations from the community were accepted as part of the fundraiser. Parker and Dammer said the support was wonderful....

Going into Friday night's game against Barnum, the Moose Lake/Willow River boys basketball team was averaging almost 90 points per game. While the Bombers were able to hold the Rebels to 29 points under their season average, the Rebels still pulled away to a 20-point, 61-41 win at home. "Our shooting percentage and points per possession were actually pretty close to our season average," said Rebels coach Wes Cummins. "I think Barnum did a great job slowing the game down and limiting our...
With our farm's first growing season fast approaching, a century-old picture on the living room wall inspires us. The image is cloudy and faded at the edges. The faces of the people are blurry. We don't know a lot about the photo except that it's from about 1915 and that two of the people are Ed and Abigail Simpson, who first homesteaded the farm in 1906. The image shows a family and all of their livestock: A team of tall, white horses; five cows and a flock of chickens pecking away in the...
The Minnesota School Boards Association deemed the past week as Minnesota School Board Recognition Week to build awareness and understanding of the vital function elected school board members play in our society. Cloquet joined other school districts from across the state to celebrate and honor board members for their commitment to students. “Strong schools help build strong communities — and school board members devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child lea...
