As the vaccination process for Covid-19 ramps up in Minnesota, getting a vaccine has almost become a sport for some - as they bounce between various drugstore chain websites, local health care clinics and hospitals and a state waiting list that closes and opens as supplies ebb and flow. If you're registered on three different lists and end up getting vaccinated earlier somewhere else, that's OK, says Community Memorial Hospital CEO Rick Breuer. Just make sure you share that information with CMH...
I've spent my whole life growing up in the countryside and getting the chance to try many outdoor activities. I understand that most people have never gotten the chance to experience the outdoors like I have and the thought of that crushes me because that often leaves people to take advantage of nature like littering and treating beautiful places like campgrounds like dumps. When I say campgrounds I mean the ones near Holyoke, Moose Lake, and Barnum that are filled with lush wildlife. I've...

In June of 2020, we turned off County Road 6, just east of Barnum, and onto the gravel driveway at the Johnson family farm. It may be our new home, but it will always be the Johnson farm. We had just come from Moose Lake, where we had signed the closing papers. Ed Johnson had handed us several large sets of keys. We still aren't sure what some of those keys open. We parked, got out of the car and started to walk. Nothing needed to be said. My fiancé, Heather-Marie Bloom, and I knew where we...
The Barnum Bombers parlayed a huge second-half scoring binge into an impressive 77-44 win over a feisty Carlton Bulldogs team in boys basketball Friday night. Leading by just nine points at the end of the first half, 27-16, the Bombers lit it up in the second half by scoring 50 points to secure the win. "We had a balanced scoring attack," said Barnum coach Rich Newman. Did they ever! Ten Bombers scored, with Joe Peterson leading the second-half surge with 19 points. Also scoring in the double...

The on-again, off-again talks between the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts regarding consolidation are officially off again. Superintendents and school board members agreed last week that it was time for a “pause” in current negotiations regarding a merger that has been kicked around for more than a half-century. The pause marks an end to a flurry of consolidation maneuvers in the past two years that saw the school boards agreeing on a two-site plan that would utilize the South Ter...
By working with as many sources as possible, the Cloquet school district is making good progress getting staff members vaccinated for Covid-19. Superintendent Michael Cary told Cloquet school board members that they started the process with the state efforts, but found that when 42 people traveled to the regional vaccine center in Mt. Iron there wasn't enough vaccine to go around. More recently, Carlton County has been an incredibly important partner in the process, he said. "The last couple of weeks the county has gotten doses that they're...

As of Feb. 10, Carlton County had seen a cumulative total of 2,946 Covid-19 cases with 43 deaths, according to the most recent numbers from the Minnesota Department of Health. The state’s Feb. 4 rep...

Carlton County girls basketball rivals took to the hard court last Thursday as the host Cromwell-Wright downed Barnum 60-33. "We were able to rush out to a 17-0 lead, and then cruised from there," said Cardinals coach Jeff Gronner. "We did have our season-high in turnovers though, and that is something we need to clean up." The big two in scoring for the Cardinals were Sascha Korpela and Natalee Hakamaki. The junior duo scored 19 and 16 points, respectively, in leading Cromwell-Wright to the...

Thomson Township resident John Luomala was exceedingly happy to get his Covid-19 vaccination shot from Essentia Healthcare in Duluth last week. From the first recorded call - when he waited 45 minutes, but just left the phone on speaker - to get an appointment to his arrival at the Essentia auditorium to check in, then getting his actual shot, Luomala said it was smooth sailing. There were only about six people in front of him waiting for shots, and the line moved quickly. "A young nurse...

Here is a look at the 33 awards the Pine Knot News received last week from the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The annual contest run by MNA pits papers of comparable size against each other. Awards honoring overall work by a newspaper come from a look at issues chosen at random under contest rules. Entries by individuals are chosen by newspaper staff from a year’s worth of work. There are about 285 newspapers in the state that are part of the association. About 260 of those papers are w...

The Barnum girls basketball coach was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 19, for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his players. Andrew John Palmer, 33, of Moose Lake was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Carlton County Sixth District Court Thursday; each count is related to a different alleged sexual encounter. When the Pine Knot News wrote of Palmer’s arrest in last week’s newspaper, he had yet to be formally charged. There was little information available, other than the fact that he had been arrested with cha...

We value our fire protection in Carlton County, and we particularly like the lower home insurance premiums we enjoy thanks to having a fully staffed, 24/7 fire department with an excellent response time here in Cloquet. But another public building built on public tax dollars may tax our community too much at a time when we’re just not sure what other public buildings may be coming. In the past few years, Carlton County has built a new public works garage in Barnum and a Human Services building in Cloquet. Cloquet schools built a beautiful n...
"Patience, patience, patience," is what Esko boys basketball coach Derek Anderson preached to his players this week prior to their 78-47 road win over Cloquet Tuesday night. "We were patient on offense early on in the game, which opened up a lot of shots," Anderson said. "We have been playing in too much of a hurry lately, so it was nice to get back on track and work the ball around." Working the ball around paid off and the Eskomos sprinted out to a 32-18 halftime lead. They were never...

Students went back to the Barnum elementary and high schools Tuesday, Jan. 19. “It was great to hear their voices in the halls again,” said Barnum superintendent Mike McNulty in a telephone interview later that day. “I hope that lasts a long time.” The elementary students have returned to school five days a week, while the high school students attend school four days a week. They participate in distance learning on Wednesdays, explained McNulty. “Wednesday is a day for the teachers to do preparation work,” said McNulty. “We don’t have th...
