The Barnum girls basketball coach was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 19, for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his players. Andrew John Palmer, 33, of Moose Lake was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Carlton County Sixth District Court Thursday; each count is related to a different alleged sexual encounter. When the Pine Knot News wrote of Palmer’s arrest in last week’s newspaper, he had yet to be formally charged. There was little information available, other than the fact that he had been arrested with cha...

The state’s Jan. 21 repo...
We value our fire protection in Carlton County, and we particularly like the lower home insurance premiums we enjoy thanks to having a fully staffed, 24/7 fire department with an excellent response time here in Cloquet. But another public building built on public tax dollars may tax our community too much at a time when we’re just not sure what other public buildings may be coming. In the past few years, Carlton County has built a new public works garage in Barnum and a Human Services building in Cloquet. Cloquet schools built a beautiful n...
"Patience, patience, patience," is what Esko boys basketball coach Derek Anderson preached to his players this week prior to their 78-47 road win over Cloquet Tuesday night. "We were patient on offense early on in the game, which opened up a lot of shots," Anderson said. "We have been playing in too much of a hurry lately, so it was nice to get back on track and work the ball around." Working the ball around paid off and the Eskomos sprinted out to a 32-18 halftime lead. They were never...

Students went back to the Barnum elementary and high schools Tuesday, Jan. 19. “It was great to hear their voices in the halls again,” said Barnum superintendent Mike McNulty in a telephone interview later that day. “I hope that lasts a long time.” The elementary students have returned to school five days a week, while the high school students attend school four days a week. They participate in distance learning on Wednesdays, explained McNulty. “Wednesday is a day for the teachers to do preparation work,” said McNulty. “We don’t have th...

Almost every aspect of life has been upended by the global pandemic we continue to find ourselves in. Organizations have learned to find creative solutions to new challenges, including Business Professionals of America, a competitive organization that allows middle- through post-secondary students to compete in business, marketing, and technology events at regional, state, and national levels. Wrenshall High School has had a BPA team for the past several years. Started by Kelly Bonitz, now at...

Andrew John Palmer, 33, of Moose Lake was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Carlton County Sixth District Court Thursday; each count is related to a different alleged sexual encounter. According to the criminal complaint, the victim’s parents contacted local law enforcement on Sunday, Jan. 17, regarding a possible criminal sexual assault of their 17-year-old daughter by her basketball c...
Expect to see children in a school near you very soon. School districts across Carlton County will have students back to in-person or hybrid learning as soon as next week, thanks to a change in state guidelines for Covid-19 precautions. While the previous guidelines required districts to rely on county-level data on the level of virus transmission in their communities, the latest plan allows schools to bring students back as soon as Jan. 18, provided they meet certain requirements. Those...
Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet is now the owner of a rapid testing device which can produce Covid-19 results in approximately an hour. Once a sample is gathered from a patient using a nasopharyngeal swab, the BioFire diagnostic tool identifies and replicates genetic material to produce a positive or negative Covid result. This instrument can also be used to test for 20 other respiratory diseases, including influenza and strep. The purchase of this equipment was made possible with funds...
The coronavirus pandemic continues its assault on our bodies and the economy. On the bright side economically, restaurants and bars reopened Monday, Jan. 11, at 50 percent capacity with a mandatory closure time of 10 p.m. as cases of Covid-19 ebb in Minnesota, but remain relatively high compared to early 2020. To make it easier for folks who’d like someone else to cook tonight — and to support local business owners — the Pine Knot News offers this guide to Carlton County restaurants and bars....
Cromwell-Wright Oh what could have been! Last year Cromwell-Wright was on the precipice of what could have been a state title. The Cardinals were loaded with talent and had two of the top players in the area. They advanced to the state tournament and were an odds-on favorite for the championship game. Then? The Covid pandemic hit and the Cards season ended without a chance to play in their semifinal game and move on to the championship. Gone are eight seniors, including two players who scored...
Cromwell-Wright If Cromwell-Wright is going to contend for a section championship this year, they will have to overcome the loss of five seniors who graduated from last year's state-ranked 20-5 team. After going 10-0 in the conference, the Cards were shocked in the subsection quarterfinals by Hinckley-Finlayson, but that does not diminish just how truly good that team was. Led by Polar League MVP Micah Pocernich, the Cardinals will need to find a way to replace his 25.3 points per game, along...
The state will allow bars and restaurants to offer indoor dining again next week — with limits — and also allow for movie theaters, museums and other entertainment venues to reopen after being closed since mid-November. The new order, announced Wednesday by Gov. Tim Walz, is set to take effect Monday. It will allow bars and restaurants to operate at 50-percent capacity, with no more than six people to a table or parties of two at the bar. Reservations are required and dine-in service must end by 10 p.m. “Business owners are pretty innov...
A fly on the wall at the office of the Pine Knot News, during a meeting of the minds discussing year-in-review stories, may not have contained itself in screaming: "Covid. Done." But, being a fly with no means to discernibly communicate with humans, no one here at the office heard the plea. Not that we needed to. 2020. Covid. Pandemic. Restricted socializing. Masks. Illness. Death. Loss. Or, as we displayed in our largest headline of the year on March 20: Everything has changed. Yes, fly, 2020...
Carlton County Covid-19 numbers declined for a fifth week, with an increase of 65 cases between last Tuesday and this Tuesday, and three new deaths from Covid from Dec. 22-29. That's down from a week-to-week high of 407 new cases from Nov. 18-25. Since then, the new case numbers have been dropping steadily, although they are still high compared to the surge this spring. As of Tuesday, Dec. 29, Carlton County had seen a cumulative total of 2,572 Covid-19 cases and 36 deaths, according to the...
Gene Shank most often got up before his wife, Linda, did. She had allergies, and at night it could keep her from getting to sleep right away. Gene would let the dogs outside at their home next to the Moose Horn River in Barnum. He'd putz around, get on his computer. It was the "normal life of retired people," he said. Linda was a loud snorer - "she rattled the windows" - and he relied on that rumbling to know she was at least getting her sleep. By mid-morning, he'd start preparing the stinging...
When Cloquet Community Ed director Ruth Reeves pictured retiring this year, in her mind she saw herself enjoying each activity one last time. "Each last whatever, I told myself I would really really take the time and enjoy it," Reeves said. "And then we just started canceling things in March. And we kept canceling things." She had planned to step down at the end of the fiscal year in June, but it was just too "weird" she said. So she figured maybe things would be better in December. "Of course,...
When I was growing up in Cloquet and Carlton county in the 1960’s, basketball was, in popularity, definitely the king of winter high school boys sports. Most of who were considered each school‘s “best athletes” played hoops (OK, I might get a few arguments here and slightly I’m looking through rose colored glasses as I played basketball). However, for the majority of county players, and for sure all females, there wasn’t a sports option. Basketball was the only winter sport offered at many of...
Through the contributions of Lake Country Power’s participating members, the Operation Round Up trust board recently approved $53,497 in assistance to various community programs during its quarterly meeting. The cooperative’s trust board reviewed and considered 40 grant applications and distributed funds to 38 projects and programs this past quarter. Since the program’s inception in October 2004, more than $2.5 million has been distributed to community-based projects and programs. Carlton County recipients included the Cloquet Educa...
Carlton County Covid cases continued their downward trend for the fourth week in a row, with an increase of 108 cases and four deaths because of Covid-19 from Tuesday to Tuesday, Dec. 15 to 22. Compared to 172 new cases and eight deaths from Dec. 9-16, it’s a decrease. And those numbers were a decline from Dec. 2-9, when there were 224 new cases and 21 deaths, and Nov. 25-Dec. 2, when there were 327 new cases and seven deaths. But the numbers are still much higher than Carlton County Covid numbers last spring and this summer, when there was jus...

She called many places home, including South St. Paul, Two Harbors, Bassett Lake, Castle Danger and Barnum. In 1986 she married Gene Shank. Together they enjoyed buying and selling antiques and vintage wares. Linda was always artistic in nature, decorating her homes and stores with great care and creativity. In recent years she found painting pictures to be fun. She...
