After much study and citizen input, the Carlton county transportation department has decided to keep the Kettle River county garage open as a base of operations for the area’s grader. Commissioner Gary Peterson recently attended a Split Rock Township board meeting with more than 15 people in the audience. “Not one person there thought the closure of the Kettle River garage was a good idea,” Peterson said. “I am glad that it has worked out to keep the garage open. My constituents support that action.” The county’s Barnum garage is being upgra...
One thing is certain: the Class of 2020 will have lots of stories to tell future generations about their final school days. Last Friday marked the beginning of the high school graduation season with three ceremonies - for Carlton, Cromwell-Wright and Cloquet graduates - each one organized differently but taking into account the COVID-19 pandemic and state guidelines to avoid large gatherings and maintain social distancing. In Cloquet it was a true drive-in movie experience. Cars started lining...
Democratic-Farmer- Labor candidates and supporters gathered outside the Premiere Center on a brisk Friday morning to celebrate the party's endorsement of State Representative District 11A incumbent Mike Sundin and State Senate District 11 challenger Michelle Lee. The endorsement convention was held online over 10 days, versus the usual one-day convention in Barnum. More than 130 delegates voted, Lee said. A limited number of supporters were invited to attend, and both the candidates and their...
Cloquet's Thomas Proulx announced this week that he is seeking re-election for the Carlton County commissioner seat he has held since 2010. "It has been a pleasure and honor to serve the residents of District 3 on the county board," said Proulx. District 3 includes much of Cloquet. Proulx, who is a probation officer and assistant tennis coach at Cloquet High School, sits on a number of committees and boards, including the Tribal Relations and Health and Human Policy committees for the...
In response to the COVID-19 impact on the local economy and health, the Carlton County board of commissioners approved a limited freeze on hiring, with the board pledging to make a step-by-step study of each position before a new person is hired. There was lengthy discussion on budget and personnel matters during the regular board meeting Tuesday, May 12. Acting auditor/treasurer Kathy Korteum reported that spring property tax payments are about 5 percent below other years and the final figure will not be known until after May 15 when payments...
In the early 1970s, a bunch of us guys finishing up our high school days wanted to continue to play competitive basketball. We played nearly every evening after school at the Cloquet Civic Center. Once in college, I talked to Kate Vestin, who was the center's manager, and told her I was interested in forming a team to play in a men's basketball league. I thought we could - although "undersized" - hold our own. Kate gave me league details and explained the need to find a sponsor. The sponsor's...
Saturday night sauna visits with Great-Uncle Krigsholm and the Reed and Koivisto grandparents included tales of past epidemics that killed family members or neighbors. Average life expectancy in 1918 wasn’t much past age 50. People who died in their 70s or 80s were few and far between — 50 was old age and 80 was ancient. I wrote for the Barnum Herald while I was in high school in Barnum and at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I scoured back issues and wrote a weekly column entitled “The Good Old Days.” It noted events and interes...
The announcement by Minnesota governor Tim Walz that distance learning would be extended for the rest of the school year was a gut punch to many area students. It hit seniors particularly hard. Members of the Class of 2020 who were hoping they'd spend the last few weeks of school with their classmates will continue to learn from home, mostly online, and see the majority of their friends only through various social media platforms and video classroom meetings. News that all spring high school spo...
Barnum superintendent Mike McNulty felt chilled the afternoon of April 1 after leaving his office at Barnum High School and returning to his rented cabin near Sand Lake. "I felt like I was coming down with a cold," he said in a telephone interview this week. "I took a hot shower to warm up." But he felt better the next morning and went back to his office. "I didn't have a temperature but, within hours, I alternated between feelings of being chilled and feeling hot," he said. "I got out of the of...
For the first time in recent county board action, commissioner Mark Thell voted “no” to approve a road construction project funded through the half-percent sales tax after a presentation by county highway engineer JinYeene Neumann at the Carlton county commissioners meeting Monday, April 27. The project under discussion was the upgrade of the St. Louis River Road between Highway 33 and CSAH 1, awarded to Ulland Bros for $1,054,622, which came in 17.2 percent under the engineering estimate. It is one of two roads left from the original list fro...
Quite a few are suffering because of the order to stay at home and quarantine in place. So many, in fact, that it's hard to keep up with all the sympathy we have for those suffering. But right about now our hearts go out to high school seniors, who are being denied prom, spring sports, senior banquets and a normal graduation ceremony with all your classmates. High school seniors are a rare breed. By the time a student reaches 12th grade, they are no longer children, yet not quite adults either....
Tracey Goranson's "Hair It Is!" is the longest-living commercial business on Cromwell's Main Street. Tracey offers haircuts, perms, color, eyebrow waxing and a tanning booth to men, women and children of all ages. She's built a loyal clientele of locals and cabin people. It's a wonderful career for Tracey, who loves working a mile from home and being her own boss. Once "stay at home" restrictions began, the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology sent Tracey updates, including the notice to close...

It was the stand of white pines that sold us this spring. We turned off the gravel road, stepped out of the car and you could hear it: The wind whistling through the pine needles. We were home. Or, we thought we were. The 40-acre parcel of land was just down the road from Cromwell and near where we now rent a farm. It had most of the things we were looking for - decent land, a few outbuildings, and a large buffer of woods and wetland. My partner could run her vegetable farm from here and I...
Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan launched a week-long statewide homemade mask drive to encourage Minnesotans to create homemade masks for donation and highlight the importance of workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Minnesotans can deliver homemade masks to their local fire department. Fire departments will then deliver the masks to local congregate living facilities for their employees and residents to wear. Find...
Just before Easter, a single chick-in-an-egg toy was left at the end of the day after a customer brought in a birchbark basket of 30 of them. The toys were free. Another woman brought in homemade facemasks on Friday that anyone could take for free. "They went like crazy," said Renee Gaffney, one of the owners of TJ's Country Store. Those are just two examples of how people in the tiny community of Mahtowa have pulled together during the statewide stay-at-home order in response to the...
A house fire in Barnum Township Sunday put three people in the hospital for smoke inhalation, and destroyed the home, killing several pets that were inside. According to a press release from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call reporting the structure fire at 4120 County Road 6 in Barnum Township came in just after noon Sunday, March 29. The initial report was that the water heater inside the residence had started on fire and the flames had spread to the residence. Members of the Barnum Fire Department, Moose Lake Police D...
For now, high school sports and other activities in Minnesota are in a holding pattern. The Minnesota State High School League first shut down all spring sports March 13 through today and now will extend the period to coincide with the order for schools to remain closed to at least May 4. It all in response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The MSHSL said a decision on canceling the season hasn't been made. "Right now there really isn't much our coaches can do until we know what is going on,"...
Sports fans come in all types. They all have at least one thing in common and that is their love for sports. How are sports fans coping with the lack of sports during the COVID-19 pandemic? The Pine Knot News had a chance to check in with a number of local high school activities directors — you know, the people who deal with all sports at school daily — to learn how they have been reacting to the lack of local, regional and national sports. “I am not necessarily going through any type of sport...

The Barnum school board voted to cut positions from the school staff for the next school year at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 17, despite a plea at a community meeting a couple of weeks ago to cut the positions slowly. “We are where we are,” board chair Colleen Fetters said, and called for approval of the reduction of one full-time elementary teacher, a half-time Spanish teacher, a full-time physical education teacher, a full-time math teacher, and a third-time science teacher. All passed. A vote on the reduction of a half-time mus...
This is a tale of a nearly 80-year-old gent who grew up in Barnum on a farm in the 1950s, enlisted in the Army and traveled the world, and managed a working career which included teaching children and building partnerships among various interests and groups. His name is Alan Finifrock. He is back in the area now, living in Cloquet as a retiree and world-class Carlton County tree farmer. Oddly enough, when he taught school in rural Alaska, the nearest tree was 100 miles away. Since Al knew that...
