A former Barnum School District payroll employee who took — and paid back — $14,062 from the school’s food service fund pleaded guilty to theft last fall under the terms of a plea deal. Tuesday's Republican and Democratic-Farmer-Labor party caucus meetings were substantially more subdued than the last time presidential candidates were on the ballot. Local party leaders on both sides agree: that's mostly because Minnesota is now holding a primary election for president, rather than using local caucuses to choose a candidate. "I've had people ask me why we're even having precinct caucuses," said Carlton County DFL chairperson Patty Murto, as she waited for results to come in...

The Cardinals girls basketball team is poised to make a deep run into the 2020 girls section playoffs as action begins this week. Cromwell-Wright has been one of the top teams in Class A over the past half dozen years and are, once again, the top seed in the Section 7A playoffs. Last season the Cardinals fell in the section title game to Mountain Iron Buhl. This season only two losses have prevented the Cardinals from an unbeaten regular season. Entering the playoff the Cards are 24-2 with the...
When Dustin Anderson wanted to improve his small vineyard in Carlton, he called the company that had sold him his grapevines. What happened next is why he is known as "The Apple Tree Guy" and not "The Wine Guy." Anderson had purchased a couple of apple trees from this same vendor and they were doing well, but the grapevines were not. The company suggested he plant more apple trees, but had a 100-tree minimum purchase policy. "Oh yeah, I can put in 100 trees," the hardworking Anderson told them,...
Students, parents and teachers talked to the Barnum school board at its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 18 to express their concerns about proposed staff cuts following news that the district needs to make significant cuts or it will go into the red. Kyle, a student, spoke first and listed two items that the students wanted the board to realize: that academic needs are met by the students’ relationships with the teachers, and that the students care deeply about each and every teacher. A high school teacher asked if restructuring, such as a f...

The double whammy of fewer students and state and federal mandates that aren’t fully funded has the Barnum School Board looking at major cuts to keep the budget in the black. However, after five years of deficit spending, the school board now needs to make $750,000 in cuts or risk going into statutory operating debt. A large crowd of concerned residents attended the working meeting of the Barnum school board Feb. 4. It wasn’t so much a presentation from staff to audie...

Minnesota climatology records show that January was the cloudiest on record since recorded observations started in 1963. With the gloomy weather it can be hard to stay motivated. It is lit by lights hanging in the pine trees that stay on until around 9 p.m. There is a warming house and bench for folks to put on skates and rest....
