  • Yoga class makes spiritual practical

    Holly Henry|Jan 17, 2020

Paula Williams of Barnum has been doing yoga since 1999, for the past five at The Nest Wellness Center in Cloquet. “I started doing yoga when I decided it was a good way to exercise but it was also a spiritual form of exercise,” she recalled. “I wanted to find a way to be more physical and the fact that it had some kind of grounding in spiritual wisdom was compelling.” Not only has Williams gotten stronger, but she has learned to breathe again, something she said helps her destress on a daily b...

  • County lowers levy increase to 2.9 percent

    Dan Reed|Dec 27, 2019

At its final meeting of 2019, the Carlton County Board of Commissioners set the property tax levy increase at 2.9 percent, shaving 1 percent from the preliminary levy set in September. This is the smallest increase in the levy for many budget cycles. “I am pleased that we came in at that figure,” board chairman Dick Brenner said. “A 2.2 precent wage increase for county employees this coming year, rising insurance costs and added staff in the sheriff’s office for state-mandated jail coverage all put pressure on the new 2020 budget.” The vote...

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 27, 2019

The Barnum girls basketball team showed the tall and the short of it against South Ridge Friday night in Barnum. In the first half, the Bombers rode the height of Allison Marine to a 32-20 lead over the Panthers - in the second half it was outside shooting of guard MaKenzee Schleret that led them to a final score of 71-48. "I was pretty happy with the way we started the game, but then we had a bit of a slow period in the second half where we were a step or two slow," said Barnum coach AJ...

  • County will have to wait out consolidation

    Mike Creger|Dec 13, 2019

The Carlton county board will join a list of those waiting on decisions regarding consolidation between the Wrenshall and Carlton school districts. The Carlton school board has been drafting a letter to the county regarding the possible sale of its high school property, which sits next to the county jail. The county board approached the district with the idea of using school property to build a new jail. It told the district earlier this year that it wanted an answer about the availability of the school land by next week. That won’t happen. T...

  • Winter roars in, people dig out

    Jana Peterson|Dec 6, 2019

The double whammy of winter storms on either side of Thanksgiving Day will surely be remembered by those who endured it. Some were lucky enough to be nestled with friends and family for what turned out to be a weeklong holiday for school kids. Others dealt with trying to dig themselves out and get to work or attend to other essential business as the blizzard that hit Saturday and into Sunday dropped 13 to 20 inches on Carlton County. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 26-27, the first significant...

  • Tales of tackling the storm

    Pine Knot News|Dec 6, 2019

As Minnesotans, of course, you squeeze the bad and the good out of winter weather. The Pine Knot asked readers to send us their storm photos, and they delivered. Most of them are of people frolicking in the fresh snow Sunday and Monday. Most schools in the county closed Wednesday and some closed Monday (although not Barnum or Cromwell-Wright), as many roadways were still choked with snow. Other pictures show just how deep the snow was and the efforts made to clear it. Some shared their stories w...

  • Carlton news

    Leola Rodd|Dec 6, 2019

The Christmas season is upon us, and I finally finished putting up my Christmas lights. Then the storm came with a vengeance and covered some of the reindeer and trees. I will do my best to clear things out before Christmas and the Carlton Holiday Market. Please take time to visit the Carlton Holiday Market Dec. 7. For more than 30 years before the holiday market started, we held a craft show at Carlton High School. At first, the Carlton Hockey Association organized it as a fundraiser to help...

  • Cardinals overwhelm Bombers

    Kerry Rodd|Dec 6, 2019

An impressive shutdown defensive effort by the Cromwell-Wright girls basketball team helped to propel the Cards to a 76-17 win over the Bombers Monday night in Cromwell. "Our defense is the strength of our team," said Cards coach Jeff Gronner. "We have some skilled offensive players, but our overall strength of our team is defense and we showed that on Monday night." After Barnum cut the lead early in the game to 8-4, the Cards went on a massive 37-6 run to close out the first half and take a...

  • Pearl Harbor still echoes, 78 years on

    Jana Peterson|Dec 6, 2019

Some memories never fade. Don Long remembers the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 like it was yesterday. The Barnum High School 1939 grad had been at Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station in Hawaii for about only two weeks when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, an act of aggression that catapulted the United States into World War II. "I was a Seaman Second Class, the lowest animal in the Navy," Long said in a phone interview from his home in Napa, California this week. "I'd been to boot camp and radio school,...
