  • OUR VIEW: Cheers & Jeers

    Sep 13, 2019

Cheers to multi-use pathways. The concrete pathway along the south side of Washington Avenue will help encourage kids to walk, and ride bikes and skateboards to both the Cloquet middle and high schools. The pathway along Big Lake Road connecting the tribal center to Fond du Lac Gas and Grocery will also encourage people to walk or bike rather than drive for short errands and simply for exercise. Most of us need to walk more, and walking on the roadway is not safe, especially on busy roadways like the two mentioned. (By the way, these trails...

The Bulldogs return the entire team from a year ago and would like to improve on that impressive season. Holly Henry|Aug 23, 2019

Since then it's been going strong, thanks mostly to a collection of dedicated volunteers. Siltanen said without those volunteers the complicated racing program would not be possible. "Each year the track starts out from a grassy field and after countless hours of dragging the track it turns into a horse...

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 23, 2019

In Esko, numbers and hopes are high With around 60 players out for this year’s team, the Esko football team may be the envy of most Class AAA teams around the state. Those are solid numbers for a school of that size and the Eskomos are hoping to parlay that into success on the field as well. The Eskomos struggled last season and finished 3-7, including a second-round playoff loss. With leadership from returning veterans such as Dylan Vinje at wide receiver, Keegan Akervik at defensive end, E...

  • Change is afoot for fall seasons

    Kerry Rodd|Aug 16, 2019

The fall high school sports season kicked off Monday with nearly every fall team hitting the gym, court, pool or field to start practices and get ready for the season. Student athletes have been anticipating this week, but so have coaches — especially first-year coaches who are just trying to feel their way through the process for the first time. Year-in and year-out, there are usually more than a few changes in coaching positions as coaches retire or just move on, but this year things are r...

  • Mahtowa course beckons golfers

    Steve Korby|Aug 16, 2019

"It's the finest little nine-hole course in Minnesota." That's what one of the ladies in the clubhouse bar told me as I completed my interview at 29 Pines Golf Course in Mahtowa. I had to try the famous homemade chicken Alfredo pizza and a North Shore microbrewery beer to make my visit complete and perfect. After a few bites and sips, it made me wonder if I shouldn't be chasing down Carlton County's tastiest pizza but I continued in my assignment of reviewing Carlton County's golf courses. 29...

An old farmer I knew passed away, and my part of the inheritance was a big box of old almanacs dating back to 1925. There were plenty of Farmer’s and Old Farmer’s almanacs and several other lesser-known books. A 1925 Swamp-Root Almanac came from the Carlton Drug Company. A 1948 De Laval was from Barnum Hardware (phone 38). A 1948 Rexall magazine with the “Perry Mason” show’s Barbara Hale on the cover was issued by Kinney Drugs in Carlton.
