  • Letter to the Editor: Rep. Dotseth is not focused on us

    Sep 20, 2024

There were 5,488 bills introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives last session. Some ideas were good, a few were real doozies. Our State Representative Jeff Dotseth might have the distinction of putting forth the biggest head-scratcher. On March 7, he introduced HF 4687: “Harmful atmospheric activity prohibited, and penalties provided.” The bill talks about “cloud seeding,” “stratospheric aerosol injection,” “xenobiotic agents,” and “electromagnetic radiation.” These are all references to chemtrails, a discredited conspiracy theory t...

  • Rodd's Ramblings: Road to new stadium was an enjoyable journey

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 20, 2024

The official grand opening of the Members Cooperative Credit Union Stadium and athletic complex was held Friday night prior to the Cloquet vs. Duluth East football game. School officials, the school board and MCCU representatives joined in a ribbing cutting ceremony before the game, and giveaways were in abundance in celebration of the occasion. A lot of work went on behind the scenes to get the project done, and as with anything of this magnitude, everything had to come together at the right...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Sep 20, 2024

What another beautiful day in our area. The trees are turning color, and the sky has been blue. So much in nature to see and appreciate. I hope you can get out and about to enjoy this time of year. I hope you have noticed the beautiful huge American flag flying over the Self-Serve station in Cromwell. It is a great addition to the gas station and the community. As some of you already know, I have been subbing again this fall. My first day back was Sept. 6 in Floodwood, and I have several more...

  • Closure sought in missing person case

    Mike Creger|Sep 13, 2024

Family and friends of Peter Martin continue their efforts to find their missing loved one. But as months have gone by, the number of those who gather on Sundays to search areas on the Fond du Lac reservation has dwindled. This week, looking for more tips and keeping the public aware that Martin remains a missing person case, those friends and family organized a walk along Big Lake Road west of Cloquet, where banners can be found with his picture, stating "Bring Peter Home." Kayla Jackson was...

The West End Flourish event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on Avenues C and B and Vine Street, which will be closed to traffic for the one-day street market. • Charges filed against man after teen reports assault

    Jana Peterson|Sep 13, 2024

A 32-year-old Carlton County man was charged last month for allegedly groping a teenage girl known to him. Jake Alan Gould, of Tamarack, was charged with criminal sexual conduct, first-degree, penetration or contact with a person under age 14 in Sixth District Carlton County Court Aug. 26. According to the criminal complaint, Gould repeatedly and with sexual intent put his hand in the pants of a 13-year-old girl known to him, at a social gathering at his home in June. Initially too scared to say anything, the girl told her mother and grandmothe...

  • Board votes to pay entire $400K loan early

    Jana Peterson|Sep 13, 2024

The Thomson Township board of supervisors followed the recommendation of both residents and an auditor when it voted to pay off a $400,000 loan in its entirety at its meeting Sept. 5. In turn, that vote led to a much less rambunctious adjourned annual meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, when residents came together a second time for a final vote on next year's tax levy. Normally a quick meeting with just a final vote on the levy, last month's adjourned annual meeting was contentious following news from...

  • Letter to the editor: Disrespectful Trump is insult to veterans

    Sep 13, 2024

Like many other Carlton County veterans, I take offense at the way some Republican leaders, especially Donald Trump, have disrespected veterans over the years. John Kerry ran as a presidential candidate against George W. Bush 20 years ago. Kerry, a combat veteran who received several military honors, including three Purple Hearts, had his military service falsely discredited repeatedly by Republican “Swift Boat” ads, contributing to his defeat in the 2004 election. In 2015, Donald Trump criticized John McCain’s military service in the Vietn...

  • Suicide still hurts, but action is a balm

    Jo Angell|Sep 13, 2024

Since our eldest son, Doug, died by suicide 17 years ago this month, September has been a difficult time. But it’s also a month that gives me hope, because of how many things have changed since then, nationally and in our own county. Doug’s death was devastating to our family and friends. At the time, things were kept pretty “quiet” about suicide deaths. We really didn’t have much direction on where to go for help or support after his death. It was more of a taboo subject and wasn’t talked abou...

    Pine Knot News|Sep 13, 2024

Of the 27 Carlton County 4-H members with demonstrations and exhibits at the Minnesota State Fair that began in August, 19 purple or blue ribbons were brought home by the time the fair ended on Labor Day. Purple is the top award, for entries deemed to have "met and far exceed the average standards established for that particular class. The exhibit or workmanship is outstanding with minimal flaws." Here is a rundown on the Carlton County participants who won purple ribbons: • Laura Rubesh of C...

  • It's a hot band jam on state fair stage

    Tom Urbanski|Sep 13, 2024

There are many reasons why people go to the Minnesota State Fair. The food, carnival rides, exhibits, livestock barns, music, educational demonstrations and, of course, people watching, bring nearly two million fairgoers to the fairgrounds each year. But very few get invited to perform on one of the four major stages scattered across the 330 acres of the fairgrounds. Count me as one of them. Doctor Kielbasa, a band with longtime ties to Cloquet and Carlton County, performed two days on the...

  • MCA results: Attendance drives success in school, testing

    Jana Peterson|Sep 6, 2024

Districtwide, Cloquet saw a 3 percent increase in Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments scores in the 2023-24 school year. Superintendent Michael Cary was happy to see the numbers mostly improving, four and a half years after the pandemic shut down Minnesota schools, but only three since students were faced with at least partial online classes. "As we move further past the pandemic, we appear to be seeing the impacts slowly diminish," Cary said. "The turnaround has been slower in our upper grade...

  • MCA results: 'One data point' won't deter rural educators

    Brady Slater|Sep 6, 2024

Rural schools in Carlton County showed marginal progress in the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments released by the state Education Department last week. Students mostly eclipsed statewide averages at the Barnum and Cromwell-Wright districts, but, overall, the drop in scores since Covid-19 in 2020 was still evidenced with some lackluster performances in reading and math — the two subjects that are the primary focus of the tests. To better understand the proficiencies of rural-most students and the recovery arc since the p...

    Sep 6, 2024

The vacancy will occur upon the retirement of the Honorable David M. Johnson. The seat will be chambered in Duluth in St. Louis County. Jeffrey Boucher, Jessica Fralich and Aaron Welch were recommended, said a governor’s office news release. • Cloquet proposed tax levy balloons

    Jana Peterson|Sep 6, 2024

The city of Cloquet is looking at a property tax levy increase of at least 11.23 percent for 2025, or nearly $398,000 more than last year, city administrator Tim Peterson told councilors Tuesday. Peterson said the 11-percent rise is a decrease from the original budget estimate, which would have required a 20-percent levy increase. "The No. 1 difference is wages," he said. Wages make up just over $6 million of the entire general fund budget of $9.5 million, Peterson said. The total wage...

  • Obituary: John Samuelson

    Sep 6, 2024

John William Samuelson passed into the arms of his heavenly Father on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, in Moose Lake. He was born Oct. 9, 1942, in Cook, Minnesota to Walter Iver and Martha Irene (Mattson) Samuelson. The family lived in Cook before moving to Duluth, closer to Walter's work on the Great Lakes ships. After his father died when he was 9, John and his younger brother, Walter Charles "Chuck," were raised by their mother, a short but feisty Finn. John attended Jefferson Elementary and...

  • 1963 Cloquet basketball trophy has home at museum

    Steve Korby|Sep 6, 2024

The 1963 Minnesota state high school boys basketball tournament runner-up trophy has a new permanent display at the Carlton County Historical Society in Cloquet. There is also now a film history of that magical season at the museum. The trophy came after what many basketball pundits still call the greatest state championship game ever, when Cloquet High School lost to Marshall by one point, 75-74, in front of more than 18,000 screaming fans at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of...

  • West End grants keep on giving

    James Wiita|Sep 6, 2024

The West End Flourish began with a pebble in the pond. In 2020, the state of Minnesota formed the Artists on Main Street program, designed to provide funding to projects in small town parks and business districts throughout Minnesota. The following year the city of Cloquet and the Oldenburg Arts and Cultural Community (OACC) collaborated and received one of the four available grants out of some 41 applicants. Money was available for a two-year cycle. In spring of 2021 as the Covid pandemic was...

  • Carlton County Justice Center unveiled

    Brady Slater|Aug 30, 2024

Carlton County's new home for its Sheriff's Office, courts and jail got its public unveiling last week. Too massive to cover behind a curtain, the new Carlton County Justice Center sat gleaming in front of the more than 100 guests who attended the outdoor grand opening. Among attendees Aug. 22 was Chief Justice Natalie Hudson of the Minnesota Supreme Court. She toured the facility, tripling up her "wows" when she walked into one of the three second-floor courtrooms. "Wow, wow, wow, this is...

    Aug 30, 2024

A Cloquet man is facing three felony assault charges after allegedly assaulting a woman last week that he was in a relationship with. Toby Ray Smith, 25, faces charges of first- and second-degree assault as well felony domestic assault for allegedly trying to strangle and then cutting the throat of the woman. According to the criminal complaint, Smith is known by area law enforcement, and Fond du Lac Police Department officers noticed him walking down a road with a woman on the reservation. He had an active warrant for his arrest, police said,...
