  • Knot Pining: 1937 post office mural's fate is a mystery

    Mike Creger|Feb 2, 2024

There was an interesting program on Minnesota Public Radio last week on the New Deal, the government efforts in the 1930s to pull the country out of the Great Depression. Included in the Jan. 24 Marketplace program was a segment on the Living New Deal project, an effort to locate and map across the country the many projects spurred by President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal through the Works Progress Administration and other federal agencies. One of those projects was the Cloquet Post Office,...

  • Carlton County man jumped to death in prison

    Jana Peterson|Feb 2, 2024

Autopsy results are now public for Raymond Arthur Julian, the 67-year-old Kettle River man who died by suicide in state prison on Dec. 20. According to the report released by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office on Jan. 25, Julian died of multiple blunt force injuries caused by a “jump from height.” The report gave no other details on the fall. Aaron Swanum, Minnesota Department of Corrections spokesperson, previously confirmed that Julian entered Minnesota Correctional Facility-St. Cloud on Dec. 20 and died the same day by suicide. Julia...

  • Stauber is in, so rematch is on

    Feb 2, 2024

U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, who represents Carlton County as part of the Eighth Congressional District, announced Monday that he will seek a fourth term in Congress. His announcement comes a week after Jen Schultz, a Democratic candidate, said she will run again against the Republican. The two exchanged barbs for a week in press releases and campaign pitches as the announcements rolled in. In between the announcements, Pres. Joe Biden visited Duluth and Superior to tout $1.06 billion in funding. Bef...

  • On Mauer entering Hall

    Feb 2, 2024

Pine Knot News columnist Steve Korby was curious about the Carlton County reaction to former Minnersota Twin Joe Mauer’s induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, which was announced last week. So he asked. Catch his reaction to the news on Page 11. Howie Hanson, gifted Lumberjacks shortstop and publisher of Duluth’s Howie’s Blog: “First ballot is surprising. But Mauer respected the game throughout and will continue to be a legendary ambassador for baseball.” Keith Basney, Cloquet graduate and now Arizona resident: “Mauer Ha...

  • Francy that: When it comes to saving the world, everybody matters

    Francy Chammings|Feb 2, 2024

We live in the land of more than 10,000 lakes and 6,000 rivers and streams. Fresh clean water sustains our way of life from the systems in our homes, to the farmers who grow our food, to the outdoor recreation opportunities on or near our waterways. It is easy to take all of this for granted. Even though we experienced a record snowfall season last winter, our precipitation pattern left us very dry throughout the summer months. Our garden in Carlton County needed watering often, as did the...

  • Korby's connections: Minnesota boy makes the Hall

    Steve Korby|Feb 2, 2024

Like me, I think most of Minnesota and its baseball fans were glad to see Twins catcher Joe Mauer inducted into Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Only two other catchers, Johnny Bench and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriquez, were also elected in their first year of eligibility. Requirements are such that candidates must be out of baseball for five years and have at least 10 years of playing time to be considered for HOF enshrinement. Mauer is only 40 years old and is now the y...

  • How history can flow through one man

    Jana Peterson|Feb 2, 2024

Over the years, Cloquet resident Clarence Badger has told stories of playing basketball at the old Civic Center where the fire station now sits. He shared photos of his uncles returning from World War II and partying in the Cromwell bars with happy friends. Of Pinehurst Park in the 1940s and '50s, he wrote: "The building that I used most was the large one where we would roller skate one or two days a week in a huge building that sat near what the tennis courts are today. The Wilsons would come...

  • 'X' marks demise of ash trees

    Jana Peterson|Jan 26, 2024

Pink isn't a good color for city ash trees these days. That's because Cloquet trees marked with bright pink dots (and some with large X marks) are short-timers, doomed to be cut down in response to the invasion of the emerald ash borer. Five trees in a row bear the mark on Eighth Street, and another five or six on 17th Street sport pink accents. The list of city ash trees affected by the emerald ash borer (EAB) has grown from 20 to 32 since mid-December, when Cloquet public works director Caleb...

  • Animals in person at the library

    Jana Peterson|Jan 26, 2024

Rad Zoo owner Jamie Pastika gets help holding a large boa constrictor named Louie from a handful of children Thursday, Jan. 18 at the Cloquet Public Library. A 33-year-old former pet, Louie was extra shiny because he had just finished shedding his skin. More than 200 children and their family members packed the large meeting room to learn more about various reptiles and amphibians from the visiting zoo, which travels around the state and is based in an outlet mall in Medford, Minnesota. Other...

  • No movement in Moose Lake on police future

    Brady Slater|Jan 26, 2024

City of Moose Lake staffers set out 100 chairs in city council chambers Wednesday for a public hearing on policing, and each one was needed to hold the crowd. On tap: deciding whether to keep the city's police department intact, or disband it and contract with the Carlton County Sheriff's Office to provide the city's law enforcement. "When you start taking anything away from the city, you're not going to get it back again," said Doug Probst, whose sentiment was shared throughout the hearing....

  • Earliest school pairing would be 2025

    Brady Slater|Jan 26, 2024

The soonest consolidation between Carlton and Wrenshall schools would become official is the 2025-26 school year. That was the timeline shared during a Jan. 18 meeting of the Wrenshall school board. Specifically, consolidation could take place July 1, 2025 — the start of the calendar year for schools across Minnesota. “Barring any emergency circumstances, that’s the earliest you could legally consolidate,” said Wrenshall superintendent Jeff Pesta. “You’re at the point now where … the next step is a commitment from the boards, which would b...

  • County adopts housing trust fund

    Brady Slater|Jan 26, 2024

The Carlton County board on Tuesday unanimously adopted a housing trust fund, following a public hearing and presentation by Mary Finnegan, executive director of Carlton County Economic Development. The trust fund will be used to offer loans and grants for low-income homebuyers. No residents or other speakers addressed the board during the hearing. “So, basically what the housing trust fund is being established for is workforce housing,” Finnegan said. “Workforce housing can best be described as housing for all those people who are provi...

  • Reservation pipeline removal starts soon

    Jan 26, 2024

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and Enbridge are moving forward with the planned removal of deactivated sections of Line 3 and Line 4 from the Fond du Lac Reservation beginning this month. The project removes deactivated sections of pipe and restores the land to its natural state, making it more accessible to tribal members. Native-owned union contractor Gordon Construction is leading the work along with a team largely made up of Native and tribally owned subcontractors. Enbridge said in a news release that it expects removal...

  • Radosevich to run: Rematch possible for 11A

    Jan 26, 2024

Local attorney and Pine Knot News publisher Pete Radosevich is ready for Election Round 2, after an announcement Tuesday that he is running for Minnesota House of Representatives in District 11A. "I'm running for House District 11A because Carlton County is my home and I care about the issues unique to our community. While the other candidate is mimicking national issues, I feel we need a representative in St. Paul who is looking out for the issues that affect us, locally," Radosevich said in a...

  • School bus issues drive Barnum debate

    Jana Peterson|Jan 26, 2024

More than 50 people turned out for the Barnum school board meeting Tuesday, the majority in a show of support for school bus drivers. The crowd came as the board considered contracting with a private company for transportation services. It's something the district began exploring last summer, when it was down to three bus drivers. It takes eight to drive all the Barnum routes. By the start of the school year, there were four. Now, the district is up to six with the potential return of a...

  • Harry's Gang: So long for now as I run again

    Pete Radosevich|Jan 26, 2024

It’s said that one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result. Regardless, this will be my last “Harry’s Gang” column for a while, because I have decided to run for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 11A, which encompasses all of Carlton County and a small part of Pine & St. Louis counties. Again. There is no legal restriction preventing me from continuing this column. The First Amendment guarantees that the press is free fr...

  • Charges dismissed against Barnum man

    Jan 19, 2024

Last week, the Carlton County’s office dismissed two first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges previously filed against Chad Arnold Connor. The reason listed was “prosecutorial discretion.” When contacted, Carlton County Attorney Lauri Ketola declined to discuss Connor’s case specifically. She did, however, talk about the challenge of prosecuting cases that revolve around conduct from years before. “It can be difficult to prove,” said Ketola, who has made prosecuting sexual abuse a priority. She noted that her office doesn’t file charges...

  • Harry's Gang: Will co-ops rise against the odds?

    Pete Radosevich|Jan 19, 2024

My office is in the old Cloquet Co-op building in Esko, and it carries a lot of history. The thing is built solid. Those Finlanders obviously expected the building to be around for a hundred years or more. It’s tight, too, not drafty at all. So many people have stopped in over the years to reminisce about the old co-op. I feel like I’ve been here since the 1950s, when it was built. It carried groceries, of course, but also hardware, sewing stuff, farm supplies, and some clothing. And yes, to...
