Steven Studniski Briefly summarize your personal background and qualifications. I am currently employed at Sappi Paper in Cloquet as a Maintenance Superintendent. I have been in a leadership role for the last 16 years. What made you decide to run for Wrenshall mayor/city council this year? My wife and I have attended several city council meetings and we often find ourselves frustrated with how our tax dollars are being spent. What do you think are the top two issues facing the city of Wrenshall and how do you think you would go about tackling...

It was a battle. After a full game and two 10-minute overtimes, the Cloquet/Carlton vs. Hermantown Section 7AA championship girls' soccer game hinged on goaltending and penalty shots. Fortunately for the Lumberjacks, they have one of the best goalies in the state in Rylee Senich. Between Senich and shooters who had ice in their veins, Cloquet/Carlton pulled out a dramatic 1-1 tie and 4-2 shootout to beat the Hawks and earn a trip to State. "It was very scary going into the shootout," Senich...

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for 85 counties in Minnesota due to extreme fire danger for Thursday, Oct. 17, including Carlton County. A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and easily progress out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including gusty winds and low relative humidity. Do not burn in counties where a Red Flag Warning is in effect and check any recent burning to ensure the fire is completely out. The DNR will not issue or activat...
Carlton County is experiencing a steady flow of early voters and absentee ballots in advance of the Nov. 5 general election. “Since early voting started Sept. 20, we’ve been getting 50 to 100 voters each day,” said county auditor/treasurer Kevin DeVriendt. “The mail-in ballots are rolling in, too — 150 to 200 by mail every day.” Early voting is taking place at the auditor/treasurer’s office on the second floor of the Carlton County Historic Courthouse (Room 205). Also called “in-person absentee voting,” early voting is available for all...
The candidate forum organized by the Cloquet Area Chamber of Commerce got a makeover for 2024. Instead of candidates sitting side by side in the Cloquet City Council chambers in front of a live audience, individual interviews will be recorded without an audience and posted to the city and chamber website, as well as the city's CAT-7 television channel (Mediacom customers). "With only two [local Cloquet] contested races this year, we decided to do 'Meet the candidate' interviews that will be tape...
Cloquet Middle School seventh graders got a hands-on lesson about trees last week, venturing into the school forest with Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District staff and science teacher Farrah Grimm. Students learned about different types of seed dispersal, tree roots, and forestry tools, going outside with the SWCD's Jenny Sherren, below, and Tim Byrns, right, to collect seeds and identify types of tree on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Byrns also took core tree samples with an increment bore...
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz this week announced the appointment of Jessica Fralich as judge in Minnesota’s Sixth Judicial District. Fralich will replace David M. Johnson and will be chambered in Duluth in St. Louis County. She is currently the city attorney for Duluth. Jeffrey Boucher, chief deputy attorney in the Carlton County Attorney’s Office, was one of three attorneys considered for the appointment. The other was Aaron Welch, a senior assistant county attorney in the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office. Before the city of Duluth job,...
The Haunted Shack between Carlton and Wrenshall is back for its 31st season, opening tonight, Oct. 11, at 7. Crews have been transforming the working farm into the Haunted Ridge the past two months. Logan Stojevich, co-director of the attraction and technical director said there are new structures along an extended haunted hayride designed for a "more terrifying experience." A "swamp scene" has also been added. Pat Stojevich, Logan's father and the founder of the Haunted Shack said "this was...
Some carry signs, others bring photographs and many simply bring family or friends or the their own thoughts in memory of a loved one who died by suicide. They walk and talk, and remember, together. Held every October, this year's annual Suicide Awareness Memorial Walk will take place 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Carlton High School. An average of 150 community members attend the free event in memory of friends, family, coworkers and others lost to suicide, and to bring awareness...
Our society is far removed from the Great Depression of the 1930s. Nevertheless, some government programs instituted to aid in the economic recovery left their marks on the northern communities of Minnesota. One of the most familiar is the Works Progress Administration, established in 1935 to employ millions of people to build public projects such as town halls, bridges, schools and park structures. These buildings and bridges are widely known, and the WPA letters are seen stamped somewhere on...
Although most media information on elections is about national candidates, Carlton County voters should study the entire ballot before making decisions. They will be choosing, among others, three Soil and Water Conservation District supervisors. While the county has several districts, voters choose all the supervisors. In District 1, roughly the northwest quarter of the county, Michelle Boyechko has been farming for 10 years in Tamarack. She uses sustainable farming practices to raise cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens; she also works at a nearby...

The Carlton/Wrenshall girls volleyball team is moving along heading into the final few matches of the regular season. At the .500-mark, the Raptors are hoping to make some noise in the section playoffs. The team is coming off a weekend tournament in Burnsville against much larger schools and have a tough schedule before the section tournament. "We were the only single A school in the Burnsville tournament," said head coach Barb Soukkala. "We played some great teams and most were AAA schools...
Congratulations to Marcus Pocernich for being named “Rookie of the Year” at Breakfast Point Academy in Florida, where he teaches. The members of Bethlehem Lutheran in Wright are holding a congregational meeting after worship on Oct.13. They will be voting on two questions: 1. Should Bethlehem sell its property to the City of Wright for a nominal price, and 2. Should Bethlehem begin the process for closure. All members of the congregation are encouraged to attend as these important decisions are...
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources estimates much of northern Minnesota - including Carlton County and the North Shore - is at 75 to 100 percent of peak for fall colors, with Duluth and the surrounding area "past peak," according to its online map. Southern Minnesota remains at 25-50 percent of peak colors. For those looking for communal appreciation of fall colors, Jay Cooke State Park will hold a "falling leaves walk" 9-10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. The DNR is updating its fall color...
A new Cloquet/Scanlon housing study aims to build on the success of a similar study 10 years ago. That study led to support for more rental housing: both Carlton Lofts and the White Pine Apartments were created since then. But the need for housing here and across the region continues to grow, with an estimated 431 housing units needed for a range of incomes. At the same time, the blue collar manufacturing jobs that were the bread and butter here are stable, but lower-paid service sector jobs...
A 44-year-old Saginaw man faces multiple felony charges following his alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl under his care earlier this summer. Lane Lowell Smith surrendered to authorities Sept. 23, and was charged with three felony crimes, including two first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges and a third for soliciting a child to engage in sexual conduct. Smith faces a fourth gross misdemeanor charge for contributing to the delinquency of a child after allegedly providing the victim with alcohol and THC products prior to the assault. The...
A 22-year-old man who hit and killed a pedestrian in Moose Lake in March admitted Wednesday he was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs when the crash occurred. Brent James Keranen, of Pengilly, Minnesota, pleaded guilty to one count of felony criminal vehicular homicide while under the influence of cannabis/hemp edible products. Under the terms of a plea agreement with the prosecution, three other charges of felony criminal vehicular homicide will be dropped. Sentencing is scheduled for December, and defense attorney David Keegan...
Carlton County teacher, naturalist and poet Patrick Stevens has released a second book of poetry, titled "Natural Wonders." The new poetry book follows the author through his wanderings in each distinct season of the Minnesota year. He begins his journey in winter, the longest season, dealing with dying plants, frost, frozen lakes, major snowfalls, animal tracks and habitat, before moving on to spring and the welcome rebirth of plants and animals. Summer is his joyous time, bringing long days...
I am writing to express my support for Sarah Plante-Buhs as the next Carlton County Commissioner for District 1. Sarah brings a wealth of experience, a strong community commitment, and a proven ability to get things done. Her dedication to public service is evident in her deep roots in our district and her involvement in local issues. Sarah’s vision for a thriving Carlton County includes advocating for economic development, supporting local businesses, and promoting affordable housing. She understands the importance of balanced decision m...
It was appalling to me that this newspaper printed three opinions in their Letters to the Editor section last week that were all one-sided and did not print any for our hard working Rep. Jeff Dotseth. It’s also not surprising since Jeff’s opponent owns this newspaper. The opposing party must be getting very nervous about losing the race. I have known Jeff personally for the last six years. He is hard working and wants to represent everyone in his district. Jeff has worked tirelessly, despite the one party rule the last two years, to make life b...
Issues that get farmers to devote a morning of discussion during harvest time must be important. Resolutions about the Cloquet Forestry Center, local milk processing, and County Extension programs drew a dozen busy agriculture practitioners to the annual meeting of the Carlton County chapter of the Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU). The group is comprised of specialists in livestock, dairy, vegetables, berries, and agritourism, as well as Carlton County director of development Ryan Pervenanze. Chair...
