A collared gray wolf, a young female from the First Bridge pack on the Fond du Lac reservation, was found dead this month. Mike Schrage, wildlife program manager for Fond du Lac Resource Management, said the wolf was likely killed by a wolf from a neighboring pack. “Necropsy showed trauma in her throat, armpits, hips and along her back,” Schrage said. “Her collar locations and the collar locations from one of the wolves in the neighboring pack put them both in the field where we found her on the same night.” Wolves have been part of a trackin...

    Noah Beardslee|Oct 25, 2024

It’s been a year since the city of Cloquet denied the transfer of some state aid to the Cloquet Area Fire District for the purchase of a vehicle exhaust removal system. Now, using levied funds, the CAFD’s three stations will soon be outfitted with the equipment since the board approved a quote at its Oct. 16 meeting. • Letter to the Editor: Why won't Dotseth debate?

    Oct 25, 2024

Two years ago Pete Radosevich and Jeff Dotseth participated in a debate. Pete gave a quality response providing background information and then explaining his answer. Dotseth didn’t seem to match such quality. Now it appears that Rep. Dotseth has chosen to not debate in Moose Lake, the only Carlton County candidate forum where the candidates would have sat in the same room. I wonder why. Does he not want to defend his performance in the state legislature? This might suggest it’s time for a change. If you have read Pete Radosevich’s colum...

  • Letter to the Editor: Dotseth had failures as legislator

    Oct 25, 2024

In my opinion, Jeff Dotseth has been a poor representative for Minnesota House District 11A. In the midst of the recent flurry of news and debate around his domestic abuse history, I feel that his failures as a legislator are getting lost. As we head to vote, remember that Rep. Dotseth dropped the ball on legislation that was critical to funding for the Carlton County Justice Center. It is only the quick actions of county commissioners with help from Sen. Jason Rarick that salvaged that funding. I want a representative who understands how to...

My husband and I have known Caleb Dunlap since he was in the eighth grade. It has been amazing to see him grow throughout the years to become the accomplished young man he is today. We support him in his quest to become a Carlton County commissioner from District 1 because we believe his education and experience will serve him uniquely for this position. Caleb graduated from Cloquet High School and then went on to study at the University of California Los Angeles. After finishing college, he was hired by a successful West Coast company. At a me...

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote for Sarah

    Oct 25, 2024

I would like to lend my support to Sarah Plante-Buhs as she runs for Carlton County commissioner. Sarah is a strategic thinker and strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of her community, especially in the area of education. Make a plan to vote by Tuesday, Nov. 5 and consider Sarah Buhs as your candidate of choice for...

  • 'Jacks bow out of State tourney

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 25, 2024

It was déjà vu all over again for the Cloquet/Carlton girls' soccer team at the Class AA state quarterfinal Wednesday night. After winning the Section 7AA tournament last week in a shoot-out, the Lumberjacks ended up in the exact same situation against Orono in the first game of the state tournament. The game ended tied at 1 through regulation and through overtime before Orono scored four goals to the Lumberjacks' three in the shootout to win. "I thought that after we got behind early and we mad...

  • 'Jacks fall short in State quarterfinals

    Jack Slater|Oct 25, 2024

A slow first-half start led to a second-half surge for the Lumberjacks that was too little, too late on Wednesday. Ultimately, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team fell 4-2 to Blake School during a Class AA quarterfinal game in White Bear Lake. "It took us a while to obviously settle in and once we started beating them to the ball and got into the rhythm, we were able to flip that field but it just took too long," Sundquist said. "Man, if we had started that way, I think it would have been...
