  • Tree Knowledge

    Oct 11, 2024

Cloquet Middle School seventh graders got a hands-on lesson about trees last week, venturing into the school forest with Carlton County Soil and Water Conservation District staff and science teacher Farrah Grimm. Students learned about different types of seed dispersal, tree roots, and forestry tools, going outside with the SWCD's Jenny Sherren, below, and Tim Byrns, right, to collect seeds and identify types of tree on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Byrns also took core tree samples with an increment bore...

  • Francy that: Finding, and losing, art in public spaces

    Francy Chammings|Oct 11, 2024

Our society is far removed from the Great Depression of the 1930s. Nevertheless, some government programs instituted to aid in the economic recovery left their marks on the northern communities of Minnesota. One of the most familiar is the Works Progress Administration, established in 1935 to employ millions of people to build public projects such as town halls, bridges, schools and park structures. These buildings and bridges are widely known, and the WPA letters are seen stamped somewhere on...

  • Letter to the Editor: Dotseth shouldn't represent the district

    Oct 11, 2024

We, the voters of Carlton and parts of Pine and St. Louis counties must do the right thing. We have to vote out first-term Representative Jeff Dotseth. He refuses to step down after the Minnesota Star Tribune reported court records alleging domestic abuse of his wife and children in 2008. In a settlement, Dotseth pled guilty to disorderly conduct. The conduct reported makes me question his claims of pro-family values. The Minnesota Republican Party has refused to remove Dotseth from their state house caucus. Domestic abuse can not be tolerated...

  • Letter to the Editor: Candidates need to meet and talk issues

    Oct 11, 2024

There’s been a lot of talk about Jeff Dotseth’s domestic abuse and animal abuse. But I’m wondering why he won’t debate his opponent, Pete Radosevich. I called Pete to ask him when the usual candidate forum was scheduled. He said Dotseth won’t participate in a live forum, even when they tried to schedule one in Moose Lake. Why won’t Dotseth debate? It’s not hard to guess. Dotseth has been ineffective as a legislator and can’t hold a torch against Radosevich, in my opinion. Pete’s willing to debate. He’s open and transparent. Pete gets my vote....

  • Letter to the Editor: Dotseth's hard work deserves recognition

    Oct 11, 2024

When I was a young boy and brought home a tall tale from a school mate, my mother said, “Don’t believe everything you hear.” In my Barnum High School English class, Mrs. Docken cautioned us, “Don’t believe everything you read.” When serving in the U.S. Army, we were taught to evaluate information and seek to understand what is true or not true based on current evidence and critical thinking. If we are truly seeking truth, we can test allegations by gathering information, seeking all points of view, and then apply logic and commonsense...

  • Esko gets back on win track

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 11, 2024

After suffering back-to-back losses on the road to Pequot Lakes and Two Harbors, the Esko football team bounced back last Friday night with a 35-0 homecoming win over Hibbing. Esko wasted little time as Graham Hartlieb streaked to the end zone from 28 yards out in the first quarter. That touchdown was followed up by the extra point kick by Santiago Anich, making it 7-0 for Esko. "Graham has probably gotten more carries this season than any other back we've had since I became coach," said Esko co...

  • CEC is the team to beat in section

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 11, 2024

The names on the back of the jerseys may be different, but the results are the same for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team this season. The Lumberjacks garnered the No. 1 Section 7AA playoff seed last week by pounding Proctor 9-0. They finished the regular season with a gaudy 13-3 record. "We like to open the season with some games against some of the top Twin Cities schools," said CEC coach John Sundquist, explaining losses that came early. CEC started with a record of 1-3 through its fi...

Both the Esko and Cloquet/Cartlon girls soccer teams received the No. 1 seed in their respective section tournaments: Cloquet/Carlton in Section 7AA and Esko in Section 7A. Both teams also finished up the regular season in Esko last Thursday, with the hometown team edging the Lumberjacks 2-1. While Cloquet/Carlton waited until Thursday to open tournament play, Esko opened the playoffs at home Monday against Two Harbors. Two Harbors was the lone unseeded team entering the 7A tournament and...

  • Inking a bond across generations

    Mike Creger|Oct 4, 2024

Donna Shaw pushes her wheeled walker down the middle of Duluth Tattoo Company, headed for Jenna Walton's station. The artist inked an 83-year-old recently, so the 85-year-old Donna isn't much of a surprise on this Thursday in West Duluth. Donna is cool as a deep fall day, cracking wise here and there. This is old hat for her. "Wherever they couldn't find a wrinkle," she says of the tattoo she got five years ago. The angel holding a heart on her forearm matches the ones her daughter, Deb...

    Tom Urbanski|Oct 4, 2024

Aim high. Shoot for the stars. Dream big. For Lynn Tredeau, a 1979 Cloquet Senior High School graduate, her reality is living out a dream bigger than she could have ever imagined. Her music falls into the contemporary instrumental category or solo piano instrumental category, a style of music also known as mindful music. "I...

  • Housing study provides data for future

    Jana Peterson|Oct 4, 2024

A new Cloquet/Scanlon housing study aims to build on the success of a similar study 10 years ago. That study led to support for more rental housing: both Carlton Lofts and the White Pine Apartments were created since then. But the need for housing here and across the region continues to grow, with an estimated 431 housing units needed for a range of incomes. At the same time, the blue collar manufacturing jobs that were the bread and butter here are stable, but lower-paid service sector jobs...

  • New flags fly at middle shool

    Oct 4, 2024

On October 29, 2024 a presentation of flags was held at the Cloquet Post 3979 V.F.W. Cloquet Middle School students had previously approached VFW commander Ron Stigers with a request for flags to be displayed in their classrooms. "It was a request near and dear to our hearts," Stigers said. When the Disabled Amercan Veterans, American Legion, and the Eagles organizations heard about the request, they wanted to help too. A total of 54 flags were donated by the four organizations. They are hoping...

  • Church celebrates 125 years

    Oct 4, 2024

The 125th anniversary celebration at Our Savior's Lutheran Church last Sunday was a chance for parishioners to, as Pastor Luke Lekander said, "look back" and "move forward." "Moving forward requires us to change. But I don't want to change simply for the sake of change," Lekander wrote in his weekly message after the lunch and service Sept. 29. "The changes we make must be theologically rooted and always for the purpose of sharing and living out the gospel of Jesus Christ. ... The time has come...

Summer is his joyous time, bringing long days...

  • Letter to the editor: Dotseth has done many things for us

    Oct 4, 2024

It was appalling to me that this newspaper printed three opinions in their Letters to the Editor section last week that were all one-sided and did not print any for our hard working Rep. Jeff Dotseth. It’s also not surprising since Jeff’s opponent owns this newspaper. The opposing party must be getting very nervous about losing the race. I have known Jeff personally for the last six years. He is hard working and wants to represent everyone in his district. Jeff has worked tirelessly, despite the one party rule the last two years, to make life b...

  • Letter to the editor: Dotseth shouldn't represent this district

    Oct 4, 2024

What kind of man is Jeff Dotseth? One we shouldn’t vote for. We’re writing to share our concerns about the allegations against Rep. Dotseth. He has been accused of domestic abuse, animal abuse and racist behavior, over a period of a decade — not exactly a one-time mistake or lapse in judgment, or an isolated incident, or a report from only one person. In our opinion, it’s pretty simple: A man accused of domestic abuse should not be in a position to limit women’s rights to control their bodies. A man who had his own guns legally removed f...

  • Down on the farm: A chance to chat about farming

    Sandy Dugan|Oct 4, 2024

Issues that get farmers to devote a morning of discussion during harvest time must be important. Resolutions about the Cloquet Forestry Center, local milk processing, and County Extension programs drew a dozen busy agriculture practitioners to the annual meeting of the Carlton County chapter of the Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU). The group is comprised of specialists in livestock, dairy, vegetables, berries, and agritourism, as well as Carlton County director of development Ryan Pervenanze. Chair...

  • A 49-0 homecoming blast

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 4, 2024

The Cloquet football team didn't disappoint a large homecoming crowd Friday as they pounded out a 49-0 win over Proctor. "We came out and did what we were supposed to do against a team that is trying to rebuild their program," said Cloquet coach Jeff Ojanen. It took until there was 2:42 remaining in the first quarter before the 'Jacks were able to get on the scoreboard - but the 65-yard touchdown scamper by Aiden Nelson opened the floodgates. Soccer player Max Sundquist would find himself...
